It was a long week for Amanda at school. She stayed after school to work on a special project three days in a row. When she got home on Friday, she dropped into the chair with a sigh (嘆气).

“Whats going on, Amanda?” her dad asked as he was reading the newspaper.

“I have to create a webpage for my technology class, and it is taking a lot more time than I thought it would,” answered Amanda.

Her dad looked over his newspaper and asked Amanda what the webpage was about.

“Its about the difference between newspaper news and Internet news,” Amanda said and added, “I have to provide information, examples and illustrations (插图).”

“Sounds tough. Do you have someone to help you?” asked her dad.

“I have a partner named Zach,” Amanda replied. “We did research on the Internet today and found some pictures to use.”

Then Amanda explained to her father the main differences: newspaper news is printed on paper, and Internet news is published online; newspaper news is only available once a day, and Internet news is published almost as soon as the news happens; many newspapers dont even print a daily paper, and Internet news is published around the clock.

Amandas dad asked, “Which type of news do you like better?”

“I like Internet news better because I like to learn about the news when it happens,” answered she.

Her dad said, “I still like newspaper news better because I like to hold the paper in my hands and turn the pages.”

Amanda dropped into her chair again and said, “You are so old school, dad.”

Lions are opportunists. They prefer to eat without having to do too much work. When resting in the shade, they are also watching the sky to see what is flying by, and even in the heat of the day they will suddenly start up and run a mile across the plains to find out what is going on. If another animal has made a kill, they will drive it off and take the kill for themselves. A grown lion can easily eat 60 pounds of meat at a single feeding. Often they eat until it seems painful for them to lie down.

The lionesses (母獅), being thinner and faster, are better hunters than the males. But the males dont mind. After the kill they move in and take the best share.

Most kills are made at night or just before daybreak. We have seen many, many daylight attempts but only ten kills. Roughly (大致上), its about twenty daytime attempts for one kill.

When lions are hiding for an attack by a water hole, they wait patiently and can charge at any second. The kill is the exciting moment in the day-to-day life of the lion, since these great animals spend most of their time, about 20 hours a day, sleeping and resting.

Lions are social cats, and when they are having a rest, they love to touch each other. After drinking at a water hole, a lioness rests her head on anothers back. When walking, young lions often touch faces with older ones, an act of close ties among members of the group.

28. The underlined word “opportunists” in Paragraph 1 most probably means that lions ___ .

A. are cruel animals B. are clever animals

C. like to play with other animals D. like to make use of other animals

29. What can we learn about the lions from the text?

A. They make most kills in the daytime. B. Males care more about eating than active killing.

C. It doesnt take them too much time to make a kill. D. They are curious about things happening around them.

30. Why are lions regarded as social animals?

A. They depend on each other. B. They look after each other well.

C. They enjoy each others company. D. They happily share what they have.

31. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Lions at Work and Play B. Lions, Skilled Hunters

C. Lions, Social Cats D. Powerful Lions

D

How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments—mostly for entertainment purposes—is fair and respectful?

Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.

Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species name, diet, and natural range. The animals normal behavior is not often noticed because zoos dont usually take care of the animals natural needs.

The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A worldwide study of zoos has found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage sticks, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.

Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive (被關起来的) breeding of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Havent we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?

Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons for which people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals natural habitats.

32. How would the author most probably describe the animals life in zoos?

A. Dangerous. B. Unhappy. C. Natural. D. Easy.

33. In the state of “zoochosis (underlined in Paragraph 4)”, animals ___ .

A. remain in cages B. behave strangely

C. attack each other D. enjoy moving around

34. What would the author agree although he argues against zoos?

A. Zoos have to keep animals in small cages. B. Most animals in zoos are endangered species.

C. Some endangered animals are reproduced in zoos. D. Its acceptable to keep animals away from their habitats.

35. Which of the following agrees with the authors idea?

A. Zoos are not worth the public support. B. Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.

C. Zoos should treat animals as human beings. D. Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.
