On the evening of May 20, 2018, the Chinese International Channel of CCTV screened a new episode offoreigners in China, focusing on the life and work of Airaldo Piva in Hengdian, best known as China’s filmmaking powerhouse in central Zhejiang. Piva works as CEO of HG Europe (the European subsidiary of the internationally renowned Zhejiang-based Hengdian Group, founded in 1975) and honorary professor of Hengdian College offilm & Television.
Piva came to stay in Hengdian in 2008. In 2010, he received the National Friendship Award, the highest honor for foreign experts working in China. Also in 2010, He was appointed as Foreign Expert for the Internationalization and Corporate Governance by the State Administration offoreign Expert Affairs and was invited to the National Day Banquet at the Banquet Hall in the Great Hall of the People.
A native of Milan, Italy, Piva is a professional business manager. While still young, he was curious about countries in the Far East. Before he came to work in China, he worked for a Japanese company.
Piva’s bond with Hengdian started a long ago before he was employed by Hengdian Group. He first visited Hengdian on business in 1993 and made friends there. In his eyes, Hengdian Group is not an all-for prof i t group. Its development has been closely associated with the region’s development and has contributed to the general improvement of life around Hengdian. What he sees in Hengdian chimes well with his value. “I admire Mr. Xu Wenrong, the founder of Hengdian Group, and Mr. Xu Yong’an, CEO of Hengdian Group,” said Piva. “In their business philosophy, social responsibility is a high priority.”
When he came to work in Hengdian in 2007, he encountered serious professional difficulties as he spoke little Chinese and had little knowledge of Chinese culture. He even thought to give up.Then he accidently ran into Chi Yuqing in a small restaurant in Hengdian. They chatted. As he had worked as a trade representative in Hamburg, Germany, Chi was able to advise Piva on many issues. In Piva’s first few years in Hengdian, the friendship between the two grew. Chi doubled as a mentor and gave Piva tips on how to handle thorny issues. They have been very good friends since then.

Piva has learned about Chinese culture as seen in Hengdian. Now he knows a lot about China in general and Hengdian in particular. The experience and knowledge has enabled him to act as a cultural ambassador between China and Europe. He frequently gives lectures in European universities to share his experience in China with students. He brings Chinese business people and students to Europe. His experience in China and in Hengdian is always a fascinating topic. Piva concerns himself strongly with the Belt & Road Initiative launched by China. As the CEO of Hengdian Group’s European subsidiary, he often brings European investors to Hengdian for a visit. Visitors from Europe marvel at Hengdian Group growing from an industrial manufacturer into a multi-industrial conglomerate including filmmaking locations and services. He brought Italian footballers Roberto Baggio and Demetrio Albertini to visit Hengdian and other places in Zhejiang to engage in cultural exchange programs.
Piva likes Chinese culture. “I have never denied the differences.I’ve just always strived to highlight what our cultures have in common,” said the Italian in Hengdian.
Shortly before I met him for an interview, he had just returned from Hengdian to Hangzhou. He had headed a group of Italians filmmakers and educators who visited Hengdian College offilm & Television and then attended China and Europe Forum on Film and Television. One of the members of the delegation was Professor Armand Fumagalli, a graduate advisor in scriptwriting and creation.
Piva believes in China, the world’s largest consumer market. As China’s market keeps growing and improving, the world has long since sat up and taken notice. Piva hopes to enable more Europeans to view China’s development in a rational manner. He says he will continue to make efforts so as to enable those Europeans who know little about China to acquire an accurate knowledge of China and China’s development.
