Outside the Fotuoguan Station of Chongqing Light Rail Line 2 stands a handprint wall of the light rail builders. Despite its adjacency to the Liziba Station, an online attraction famous for the Line 2 piercing through the building, the wall per se is rarely known. It gathers not only the fingerprints of Chinese engineers, but also the Japanese friends’ who participated in the construction.
“This light rail has witnessed the friendly exchange between Japan and Chongqing. I hope this wall will serve as a commemorative and testimony of the friendly cooperation between Japan and China, which will enable the two peoples, especially young people, to understand each other.” On May 17, the Japanese Consul-General in Chongqing, Mr.Komatsu Michihiko told the media reporters that the Japanese Consulate General in Chongqing will conduct friendly exchange activities in Chongqing this year. The Light Rail Builder Memorial Park stands among the list of his most anticipated things.
“Shortly after the proposal of this idea to the Foreign Affairs and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the Chongqing Municipal Government, I received their active coordination and support. Through communication with the relevant departments of the Chongqing Rail Transit Group, the face-lift of the handprint wall is currently under preparation. In the near future, it will be transformed into a small light rail builder memorial park.” Komatsu added, “This year marks the 40th anniversary of the conclusion of the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship. In early May, Prime Minister Li Keqiang’s successful visit to Japan is emblematic of the commencement of a new era of cooperation between China and Japan.Early in 1985, Li Keqiang, the then alternate secretary of the Central Secretariat of the Communist Youth League, visited Japan as deputy head of delegation, which was the first Chinese youth delegation visit to Japan since 1949. After a period of 33 years, he again visited Japan as a prime minister." It is believed that youth exchanges have a very important role and significance in improving Sino-Japanese relations;and it is also believed that both China and Japan are following and practicing the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship, which will surely improve bilateral relations, deepen cooperation and boost mutual exchange.
In September 2017, Komatsu assumed office as the Japanese consul general in Chongqing: his second rendez-vous with the place. His first time here dates back to more than a decade ago. “Chongqing's changes over the past decade have been earthshaking. I am now working in Chongqing and witnessing the rapid development of Chongqing. I have personally experienced the charm of Chongqing as a city of mountains and waters, and am amazed by the pace of development in Chongqing. My love for Chongqing continues to grow. !" Komatsu commented.

Having not worked and lived in Chongqing for long, the life of the consul-general has been filled with an assortment of Chongqing elements. He watched the local TV show “Sleepless in the Foggy City” for he found the dialect rhythmically beautiful;he also gives thumbs-ups to the Chongqing-featured film “I belonged to you” and “A Second First Love”;a frequent eater to Chongqing noodle shops and stalls, he could also be found sipping fine tea at a tea house in the Hongyadong Stilted House Complex from time to time, despite his tight schedule... Over his six months’ stay in Chongqing, Komatsu has been committed to promoting the cultural exchange activities between young people of China and Japan.
