1730

Scientists have discovered 1730 new plant varieties in the past year, many of which are edible and medicinal, according to the report of the Worlds Plant Condition issued by Royal Botanic Gardens of England. The report says scientists have found 5 new varieties of cassava in Brazil with the potential to grow into a crop which are more resistant to drought and botanic virus; in South-East Asia and Central and South America, scientists have discovered 9 new varieties of the genus Lai, which are of medicinal value.

The researchers also analyzed the effects of climate change on plants. The results showed that plants with thicker leaves and skins and those which have more efficient use of water, higher density of materials and whose roots preach deeper into soil, would be better adapted to climate change. This is mainly because these features can enhance their viability, for example, plants with deeper roots in the soil can better cope with drought.
