As we all know, the American 2016 Presidential Election was held on Tuesday, November 8th. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were therespective[分别的]Democratic[民主党的]andRepublican[共和党的]candidates to take part in the finalcampaign. However, this election seems to be different from those in the past.Scandals[丑闻]about the candidates keep being exposed to the public, and the presidential election is somewhat like afarce[闹剧]. Social media in this election is no longer a tool tosupervise[监督]the government, but rather a tool controlled by politics. This makes me think a lot—what role should social media play in our daily life and even the international affairs?

It is true that with the advancement of new technology, social media provides us with grand convenience. For example, we can pick up knowledge in all felds simply by typing some key words into search engines, and we can get to know more people simply by touching the screen on our phones. Social media platforms make worldwide communication so easy that events happening a thousand miles away can be shared online by everybody. What a world we live in now!

Social media also helps us maintain close relationships with our love ones, and the chat through the Internet makes our love always remain fresh. During the last summer vacation, I had the chance to stay in America for a month. I lived with a warm host family, in which every family member loved me very much. Now even when I am in China, we can still keep in touch with each other, thanks to social media.

How about the role that social media plays in national events or international affairs? In some ways, it shows its positive infuence, like helping a country spread the latest news and national policy, or spread information at a faster speed and to a widerextent[范围]. As for our country, citizens can easily express their opinions after a policy is posted on the Internet. Micro-blog politics, as a major network in politics, plays an important role and has a far-reaching impact, helping the government build a close relationship with citizens and help build aharmonious[和谐的]society.

But each coin has two sides. With the popularity of social media, some shortcomings also arise. Some of the information we get through social media is helpful and healthy. Unfortunately, some may be inaccurate or even dangerous. Terrorism andrumors[谣言]spread through social media, causingchaos[混乱]in society. In our daily life, many people—especially teenagers—are too busy staring at their phone screens and chatting online to have a talk with people in front of them. What’s worse, social media can be controlled by some political power, which can lead to a negative effect. In the age of globalization, neither we common people nor a country can abandon these powerful social media platforms. I can’t imagine what life would be like if we couldn’t contact our friends or family using WeChat or QQ, or if we couldn’t keep up to date with the current news by checking Weibo or other online media. But it is how we make the social media play a more positive role in the contemporary society that really matters. Only in this way can we make good use of social media.
