Victoria Queen of Britain once asked Helen Keller, “You are blind and deaf, but how can you make such great achievements?” Ms. Kellers answer was the praise for her teacher, “If there is no Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller will not be known.”
When she was little, Anne developed a serious illness. A fever made her nearly lose her eyesight in her childhood, since then she had been locked in a mental hospital in Boston. Sometimes, little Anne attacked (攻击) anyone who came close to her. She ignored (忽略) everyone who appeared in front of her most of the time.
However, an old nurse believed that little Anne had hope and asked to bring love to the girl. She went to see little Anne every day. The child ignored her in most cases. But the old nurse had never stopped seeing her every day. The kind-hearted lady left the cookies to little Anne and spoke words full of love and encouragement to her. She believed that as long as she showed love, little Anne could recover.
Finally, the doctor noticed the changes in little Anne. Then the last day came, and the child who seemed to be “hopeless” went out of the locked door of the mental hospital.
After she grew up, Anne Sullivan hoped to help others, just as the kind old nurse helped her. Then she met Helen Keller. Anne Sullivan created a miracle (奇迹) in the life of Helen Keller. But first it was a kind nurse who had full confidence in little Anne and turned a hopeless child into a wonderful teacher.

The measure (衡量) of a mans real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
These words are from Thomas Macaulay, a famous English historian. Ill remember them all my life.
Some thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York. One day, Mrs. Manette Oneill gave an arithmetic test to our class. When the papers were marked, she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the same mistakes throughout the test.
There is nothing really new about cheating in exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs. Oneill didnt even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to remain after class. I was one of the twelve.
Mrs. Oneill asked no questions, and she didnt scold (责备) us either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the above words by Thomas Macaulay. She then ordered us to copy these words into our exercise books one hundred times.
I dont know about the other eleven boys. Speaking for myself I can say: it was the most important single lesson of my life. Thirty years after being introduced to Macaulays words, they still seem to me the best yardstick (准绳), because they give us a way to measure ourselves rather than others.
In our life, few of us are asked to make great decisions about nations going to war or armies going to battle. But all of us are called on daily to make a great many personal decisions. Should the wallet, found in the street, be put into a pocket or turned over to the policeman? Should the extra change received at the store be forgotten or returned? Nobody will know except you. But you have to live with yourself, and it is always better to live with someone you respect.
( )6. From the passage, we know that Thomas Macaulays words means ______.
A. students shouldnt cheat in tests
B. people can do anything if others cant find out
C. a persons real character can be measured by what he always does
D. people should be honest in anything they do
( )7. Why will the writer remember Mrs. Oneills words?
A. He can remember them very clearly by coping them one hundred times.
B. Mrs. Oneill is a very popular person.
C. The words mean much to him.
D. They can give him confidence in doing things.
( )8. What probably happened when the boys had the arithmetic test?
A. They broke the windows. B. They copied from each other.
C. They were late for the test. D. They made some terrible mistakes.
( )9. What does the writer think of the way his teacher deal with the cheating?
A. Its helpful. B. Its stupid. C. Its strange. D. Its easy.
( )10. According to the writer, which of the following is RIGHT?
A. We should learn to make great decisions.
B. We can put the wallet into our pocket if we find it in the street.
C. We are supposed to do right things even if others will never know.
