Re fl ections on Life

海外异域，红尘1依旧，在初到的惊异与逐渐的泰然间，流失了多少年光岁月。一路上有感，有悟，有思，有念2，有能成却放弃的梦想，有无望竟实现的奇缘，时时都珍藏于方寸，偶尔也流露在笔端。舟已停泊在遥远的天边，心却安顿于平静的港湾3。哪儿是江南4？在山阴道5上，在西子湖畔，更在舟子的心底，那儿仍是青山一片，绿水粼粼。祝大家如青山绿水，似同学少年6。

Drifting in an unfamiliar land doesn’t mean less hustle and bustle.Years have slipped by between the initial bewilderment and the gradual assumption of equanimity. Along the way there have been moments of reflection， insights gained， ideas explored， memories worth cherishing， dreams dashed that could have come true， and miracles that did happen. All I have experienced resides deep in my mind， though bits of it were also committed to ink. My boat has anchored at the edge of the sky whereas my heart is attached to the tranquil harbor where I set out. Where is my hometown， the blessed land south of the Yangtze River? It’s best embodied by Shaoxing’s Shanyin Path or Hangzhou’s West

【译析】

1.“红尘”原来指土路车马过后扬起的尘土，现在经常指纷纷扰扰的生活。“红尘依旧”也就是繁忙的生活依旧，所以不妨译成hustle and bustle。

2.“有感，有悟，有思，有念”的表达方式高度精练，翻译时需要仔细品味每一概念的确切含义。“感”就是“感触”“感想”，为了与标题的译文相呼应，可译成moments of re fl ection；“悟”与“感”相关，但有别于“感”，是在“感”的基础上的理解、醒悟、领悟、参悟，似可译成insights gained；“思”又有别于前两者，重点在于思考问题，探索理念，因此似可译成ideas explored；“念”即“思念”，缅怀以往有意义的经历，据此考虑采用memories worth cherishing的译法。当然，在译文里保持中文的精练程度是不可能的，我们需要尽最大努力做到的是在译文里既相对确切又有区分地反映这四种内心活动的方式。

3.原文是“心却安顿于平静的港湾”，我在译文（my heart is attached to the tranquil harbor where I set out）里添加了where I set out。虽然原文里没有“我起航的（港湾）”等字，但这个意思已暗含其中。如果不加上这个修饰语，而只说my heart is attached to the tranquil harbor，那么读者就会问：which harbor？

4.这里用了It’s best embodied by是从行文逻辑的角度考虑，前面提到“江南”（the blessed land south of the Yangtze River），那是较大的地理概念，下文的“山阴道”和“西子湖”是较小的地理概念，以小来代表大，用embodied by比较合理，虽然原文里没有对应的表达方式。

5.“山阴道”是浙江绍兴的一条古代官道，“山阴”为这条路的名称，所以音译成（Shaoxing’s） Shanyin Path。

6.“似同学少年”如果完全按字面译成like school kids，一方面无法与下文（much like the everlasting mountains and rivers）衔接，另一方面也没有体现字里行间的含义。暗含于字里行间的是our school day passion。 □Lake. It has a fi rm grip on my heart even though my boat is anchored afar. There green mountains still stand and quiet rivers still fl ow. I wish we all could keep alive our school day passion， much like the everlasting mountains and rivers.
