●Written by Zeng Ping

Our daughter is pursuing her master degree in U.S. after graduation from University of Chongqing. During her campus life, her American friend Justin and his parents were caring and kind to her. Justin’s mom made a birthday cake for my daughter’s birthday, and the whole family celebrated it together, which made my daughter felt home overseas. As parents, we were deeply moved and appreciated for their kindly caring. This spring, we were going to our daughter’s convocation and we were thinking to give what kind of gift for Justin’s parents.

This March, I got two The World & Chongqing magazines in Jinyuan Shopping Center, I found the magazines have impressive content that introduces Chongqing to the world. There are Chinese-English version that easy to understand for foreigners. I thought these magazines are the best gifts for Justin’s family to know Chongqing. Then I took photos, sent to my daughter, asked for her suggestions. She also agreed that these magazines are great as gifts because Justin’s parents love to read.

When we arrive in the U.S. this May, we visited Justin’s parents as invited. We brought The World & Chongqing, Chinese knot, and Chinese tea as gifts. They were friendly and kind to us though there is language barriers. When they read the magazine, they were exciting to point out the scenic spot of Chaotianmen pier and the juncture of two rivers, Justin’s mom was impressive by the beautiful landscape. Justin’s father held a The World & Chongqing and asked Yangtze river’s location. We answered and explained where the Yangtze River’s is, and our daughter was interpreting. The embarrassed opening conversation was replaced by our sincere communication. The host led us to look around the house, including their room display, backyard, grass ground, and their family photos. There is a huge photo shows a warship, the male host introduced this warship is Missouri, we stared at it and tell the story of how Missouri sail to Tokyo Bay, and how Chinese and American witness and accept Japanese surrender for World War II. All of us stared at the photo of Missouri, a warship hero.

We met with Justin’s parents for times after the first visit, they invited us to watch a volleyball game and go fi shing. Justin’s father is an engineer and the “encyclopedia” of family that has strong manipulative ability. Justin’s mom is an English teacher in primary school, she is outgoing with pure-heart. Both of them were German-American that immigrated to the Missouri U.S. in 19 century. Though they retired, they still care about what happens in society and international issues. The whole family had traveled to Europe and Canada but had not visited Asia, they are curious about China and interested in Chinese history.

“It is such a delight to have friends coming from afar.”

The two-month travel ended soon, Justin’s parents gave us an American travel guide and a picture book of Kansas city. They came to the plaza we live to say farewell to us. My daughter said that Justin’s parents were caring about China, and they hope The World & Chongqing introduce more information of China and Chongqing. Justin starts learning Chinese by hearing radio and reading. Justin told us in Kansas Airport that he plans to go to China next autumn, especially to visit Chongqing. He wish he could communicate in Chinese and learn to speak Cho local language, and have a try on Chongqing spicy fo
