走出“翻译定义”的误区

摘 要：论述翻译理论界的热点议题何为翻译和翻译定位、定义，指出翻译定义中的误区是将翻译定义与翻译理想混为一谈；兼论中国翻译理论界、翻译教科书视为“金科玉律”的所谓的奈达翻译定义不是翻译定义。不是翻译定义的理由：一是“翻译定义”四字是中国翻译理论家加在奈达一论翻译的句子的前面的，奈达本人没有说那是翻译定义；二是“定义”是对某一概念的客观准确的描述，而奈达的那一句话是表达翻译理想的主观愿望的表述，不是对翻译的内涵的客观描述。时代在发展，翻译在变化，翻译需要重新定位、定义。

Abstract： This paper is a study of the hot topic of the Chinese translation theory circle--redefinition of translation， and the misunderstanding of translation definition by some theorists which confuses translation wishes with translation definition . The article also argues that the so-called “Nidas translating definition” is not translating definition.The reasons are twofold： firstly， Nida himself did not call the sentence that is used by him to explain the meaning of translation a translating definition， whereas Chinese theorists labeled it as the translating definition； secondly， judging from the meaning of definition， that sentence is not translating definition in that it does not disclose the nature objectively， but instead expresses the subjective wishes of Nida.

上世纪80年代以来，中国翻译界一直在构造翻译学。翻译学要成为“学”，必须有一个完整的翻译理论体系。翻译定义是中国翻译理论体系的龙头。翻开每一本翻译教科书，它们开篇的第一章无不是翻译定义。中国的翻译理论家对翻译做出了无数个定义，还从国外引进了很多个翻译定义。最近，中国翻译界的最高权威刊物以大篇幅的编按者号召对翻译重新定位和定义[1]，国内很多著名翻译理论家著文发表高见。翻译定义在中国翻译理论体系中的重要性由此可见一斑。本文论述何为翻译定义以及翻译理论界对翻译定义的认识误区，同时兼论奈达翻译定义不是翻译定义。

一、何为定义

新牛津词典对“定义”的定义是：“definition .a statement of the exact meaning of a word，especially in a dictionary 定义，释义。*an exact statement or description of the nature， scope， or meaning of something确切概述，明确描述。our definition of what constitutes poetry我们对诗歌构成的确切描述。”[2]1528

笔者对以上定义理解如下：

1.定义是对一个词——特别是词典的词条的确切意义的表述，反过来说，对一个词——特别是词典的词条的确切意义的表述是定义。

2.定义也是对某事或者某物的性质、范畴或者意义的确切的描述，反过来说，对某事或者某物的性质、范畴或者意义的确切的描述是定义，如，我们对诗歌构成的确切描述就是我们对诗歌构成的定义。

例如，新牛津词典对意义为绘画的paint的定义是：“dipict（an object，person，or scene）with paint——用颜料描绘（人、物、景）”[2]1861。对意义为跑步的run的定义是：“move at a speed faster than a walk，never having both or all the feet on the ground at the same time——比走步快的、双脚或所有脚不同时着地的移动。”[2]1558

二、精美绝伦的汉语翻译定义

根据英语词典“定义”的含义，定义是对一个词或者某一个概念的确切的描述。汉语“翻译”是一个词，自然符合“定义”的规定。

唐朝的贾彦公有一个“翻译”定义说：译即易，谓换易语言使相解也[3]。

贾彦公的翻译定义空前绝后，妙不可语。他说，翻译是转换语言，以便相互理解。

汉语“翻译”是一个词，可是“翻译”这一个词是一个多义词，它可以分解成为几个词：

第一，“翻译”指的是行为或者行为过程，相当于英语translate或者translated，translating，比如“他经常翻译小说。”中的“翻译”是行为，英语是He always translates novels；“他正在翻译小说”中的翻译是行为过程，英语是He is translating a novel.
