1 Chinese consortium prepares for Singapore-Malaysia rail bidding

May 14, 2016 (China Daily) -- A Chinese consortium is preparing to bid for the high-speed project linking Malaysia’s Capital Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The 350-kilometer railway line, the first highspeed rail project in Southeast Asia, has attracted not only Chinese companies but also Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Germany’s Siemens and French company Alstom, all of which said they would bid for the project. When constructed, the entire trip will take two hours with the train traveling at an average of about 330 km/h. Therefore,Chinese consortium would have an upper hand in bidding for the project especially after China Railway’s acquisition of stakes in Bandar Malaysia, a transit hub, and the terminal of the proposed project.

2 China to triple spending on tourism by 2020

May 23, 2016 (China Daily) -- Travel and tourism makes part of the human pursuit for a better life; it opens a way to the new and the unknown world. Traveling has been a long-held tradition in Chinese culture. China’s spending in the tourism sector is likely to triple by 2020, to three trillion yuan (US$ 460 billion). China invested more than one trillion yuan in the sector last year, an increase of 42 percent from one year earlier, Li Jinzao, head of China National Tourism Administration, said at the ongoing First World Conference on Tourism for Development. The sector contributed 10.8 percent to GDP last year, and created 10.2 percent of new jobs. China plans to send 150 million travellers to countries along the Belt and Road in the next five years, whose travelling spending likely to top US$ 200 billion.

3 China’s economic rebalancing benefits region

May 10, 2016 (China Daily) -- The global recovery has been uneven and weaker than expected. On top of that, the rise of China as a global economic superpower has created challenges of its own, as China’s necessary rebalancing from manufacturing toward services and investment to a consumption-driven economy-critical for both China’s and global growth over the medium term remains bumpy. As elsewhere, many Asian economies face risks associated with natural disasters and geopolitical and domestic political uncertainty. But all is not doom and gloom, as Asia has considerable strengths and remains the major engine of the global economy: it continues to provide nearly two-thirds of global growth. It is likely to benefit from further economic integration and regional and multilateral trade agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

4 HNA Group may buy controlling stake in Singapore logistics firm

May 17, 2016 (China Daily) -- China’s HNA Group Co.,Ltd., the country’s fourth-largest airline, is in exclusive talks with CWT Co., Ltd., a listed Singaporean logistics firm, to buy a controlling stake worth around US$ 1 billion. There is no certainty that the negotiations will result in a definitive transaction. The negotiations between HNA and CWT shareholders have been ongoing for several months, and are now close to a conclusion. Singaporean logistics companies are very competitive. They combine the advantages of the Western market, including international experience and advanced regulations, as well as the advantages of Eastern culture, which makes it easy to cooperate with Chinese companies. Now the group mainly covers logistics around Southeast Asia, so acquiring the Singaporean company will help HNA expand its global logistics coverage.

5 China is Asia’s most attractive consumer market

May 14, 2016 (Bloomberg) -- China was the most promising consumer market in Asia in 2015, and will probably remain so in the next four years. Even as China’s economy slows and its population ages, it appears set to remain the most attractive Asian market for retailers in the years ahead. Asian consumers have shifted from bit-part players in the drama of global demand to a leading role. In ranking of the most promising consumer markets in 2015 by Bloomberg Intelligence Economics, China, Japan and India came first, second and third. For China and India, that reflects their massive young populations and large economies. China will encourage an overhaul of its consumer goods industry to meet the needs of increasingly picky buyers.

6 Singapore opens path for China

May 10, 2016 (China Daily) -- Two nations hope to upgrade FTA this year. Singapore and China’s strengthened relations and cooperation in recent years have blazed a path for China’s advanced engagement in the Asia-Pacific region. Singapore has also launched a series of “private sector-led,government-supported” projects in response to different aspects of China’s development interests, such as the Guangzhou Knowledge City, the Sichuan High-tech Innovation Park, Nanjing Eco Hi-tech Island and the Jilin Food Zone. As the first Asian country to conclude a free trade agreement with China, Singapore was China’s largest foreign investor from 2013 to 2015. China is Singapore’s largest trading partner. As China develops, its role in the regional and global system also evolves. Singapore remains a strong proponent of China’s integration into the international community. Over the years, ASEAN-China relations have grown rapidly, based on the principles of mutually beneficial cooperation and ASEAN centrality.

8 China to launch world’s first quantum satellite in July

May 23, 2016 (China Daily) -- The world’s first satellite that can achieve quantum communication between the space and the Earth will be launched in July. The satellite is dedicated to quantum science experiments, and it will serve as evidence that China is leading the world to achieve satellite-earth quantum communication.
