Lots of people give you advice on overcoming fear. 1 However, I want to tell you that a world without fear would be more dangerous, less rewarding. So we want to treat fear as a friend? Here are three reasons.

2 Think about it. Do you get more nervous when you meet the girl (or guy) of your dreams? Which is more fearful, talking to the boss of your company or to some of your friends? 3 If you didn’t have fear to guide you, you might not know that! Not so bad, right?

Next, fear encourages us to take action. Fear is a call to action. In the past, our ancestors didn’t run away in fear when they saw a tiger running toward them but tried to kill it for food. Now, most of us don’t face serious danger like hungry tigers every day, but we do face serious bosses or public speaking. So, what can we do? 4

Lastly, fear lets you know you are alive. Why do we like roller coasters (过山车)? It frightens us in a mostly safe way.Same for horror movies.

Each letter grade is assigned a number of points: A=4 points, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F=0 point. Procrastination (拖延) is a phenomenon we are familiar with. Therefore, we waste our free time and put off important tasks we should do till it’s too late. 1 Here, I will share some personal steps taken to overcome procrastination.

Break your work down into little parts. Part of the reason why we procrastinate is that we find the work too overwhelming (巨大的). Break it down into little parts, and then focus on one part at a time. If you still procrastinate after doing so, break it down even further. 2

Create a detailed timeline with specific deadlines. Having just one deadline for your work is like an invitation to procrastinate. That’s because we would get the impression that we have time and keep pushing everything back until it’s too late. 3 In this way, you know you have to finish each task by a certain date.

Change your environment. Look at your work desk and your room. Do they make you want to work or do they make you sleepy? 4

Hang out with people who inspire you to take action. I’m pretty sure if you spend just 10 minutes talking to people like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, you’ll be more inspired to act than if you spend the 10 minutes doing nothing. 5

A. The people we are with influence our behavior.

B. If it’s the latter, you should begin to change your workspace.

C. Having a companion makes the whole process much more fun.

D. It’s a bad habit stopping us achieving greater success in life.

E. Soon, your task will be so simple that you will be thinking you can do it now.

There is distinction between reading for information and reading for understanding. 1

The first sense is the one in which we read newspapers, magazines, or anything else. We can get access to the content of those materials easily. Such materials may increase our information, but they cannot improve our understanding. And we can easily get the new information, for our understanding was equal to them before we started. 2

The second sense is the one in which we read something that at first we do not completely understand. Here the thing to be read is at the first sight better or higher than the reader. The writer is communicating something that can increase the reader’s understanding. 3 Otherwise one could never learn from another. Here “learning” means understanding more, not remembering more information.

What are the conditions in this kind of reading? 4 Besides, his book must convey something he possesses and his potential readers lack. Second, the reader must be able to overcome this inequality in some degree. And he should always try to reach the same level of understanding with the writer. If the equality is approached, success of communication is achieved.

5 It is the least demanding and requires the least amount of effort. Everyone who can read can read for entertainment if he wants to. In fact, any book that can be read for understanding or information can probably be read for entertainment as well.

A. Otherwise, we would have felt the shock of puzzlement.

B. First, the writer should have a better communicating skill.

C. The writer must be “superior” to the reader in understanding.

D. Thus, we can employ the word “reading” in two distinct senses.

E. Such communication between unequal people must be possible.

F. Reading for entertainment is capable of increasing our understanding for information.

G. Besides gaining information and understanding, there’s another goal of reading—entertainment.
