第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Sometimes people come into your life and they were meant to be there, to serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson, or to help you figure out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be—a roommate,a neighbor,a professor,a friend,a lover,or even a complete stranger—but when you lock eyes with them, you know at that very moment they will affect your life in some profound(深刻的) way.
Sometimes things happen to you that may seem horrible, painful, and unfair at first, but in reflection(反思中) you find that without overcoming those obstacles(障碍) you would have never realized your potential, strength, willpower,or heart. Everything happens for a reason. Nothing happens by chance or by means of good or bad luck. Illness, injury, lost moments of true greatness, and pure stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these small tests, whatever they may be,life would be like a smoothly paved straight flat road to nowhere. It would be safe and comfortable, but dull and utterly pointless.
The people you meet who affect your life, and the success and downfalls you experience, help to create who you are and who you become. Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are sometimes the most important ones. If someone loves you, give love back to them in whatever way you can, not only because they love you, but because in a way, they are teaching you to love and how to open your heart and eyes to things. If someone hurts you, betrays you, or breaks your heart, forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart.endprint
___________. Appreciate every moment and take from those moments everything that you possibly can for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people that you have never talked to before, and listen to what they have to say. Let yourself fall in love, break free(冲破藩篱) and set your sights high. Hold your head up because you have every right to. Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you dont believe in yourself,it will be hard for others to believe in you.

Though most of us spend a lifetime pursuing(追求) happiness, new research is showing that that goal may be largely out of our control. Two new studies this month add to a growing body of evidence that factors like genes and age may impact our general well-being more than our best day-to-day attempts at joy
In one study, researchers at the University of Edinburgh suggest that genes account for about 50% of the variation in peoples levels of happiness — the underlying determinant being genetically determined personality traits, like“being sociable, active, stable, hardworking and conscientious,”says co-author Timothy Bates. Whats more, says Bates, these happiness traits generally come as a package,so that if you have one youre likely to have them all.endprint
Bates and his Edinburgh colleagues drew their conclusions after looking at survey data of 973 pairs of adult twins. They found that,on average,a pair of identical twins shared more personality traits than a pair of non-identical twins. And when asked how happy they were, the identical twin pairs responded much more similarly than other twins, suggesting that both happiness and personality have a strong genetic component. The study, published in Psychological Science, went one step further:it suggested that personality and happiness do not merely coexist, but that in fact born personality traits cause happiness. Twins who had similar scores in key traits — extroversion(外向性),calmness and conscientiousness(责任感),for example — had similar happiness scores;once those traits were accounted for, however, the similarity in twins happiness scores disappeared.
Another larger study, released in January ahead of its publication in Social Science & Medicine this month, shows that whatever peoples individual happiness levels,we all tend to fall into a larger,cross-cultural and global pattern of joy. According to survey data representing 2 million people in more than 70 countries, happiness typically follows a U-shaped curve(曲线):among people in their mid-40s and younger, happiness trends downward with age, then climbs back up among older people. (That shift doesnt necessarily hold for the very old with severe health problems.) Across the world, people in their 40s generally claim to be less happy than those who are younger or older, and the global happiness nadir appears to hit somewhere around 44.

Despite all the DVDs, flashcards, and books designed to teach babies to read, these products do not help infants(婴儿) develop reading skills, according to a new study by researchers at New York Universitys Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
“While we cannot say with full assurance that infants at this age cannot learn printed words, our results make clear they did not learn printed words from the baby media product that was tested,” said senior author Susan Neuman, professor in NYU Steinhardts Department of Teaching and Learning.
Parents, however, seemed to put confidence in these products. In interviews, parents reported that their babies were learning to read from these products and that their children had benefited in vocabulary development.
“Its clear that parents have great confidence in the impact of these products on their children,”Neuman explains. “However, our study indicates this sentiment is misplaced.”
The study, published in the Journal of Educational Psychology, involved 117 infants, aged nine to 18 months, who were randomly assigned to treatment and control groups. Babies in the treatment group received a baby media product, which included DVDs, word and picture flashcards, and flip(快速翻看) books for parents to use over a seven-month period; babies in the control group did not receive any materials.
During a seven month period, the researchers conducted one home visit, four laboratory visits, and took monthly assessments of the babies language development.
In the laboratory, the researchers tested the babies skills by seeing if they could recognize letter names, letter sounds, vocabulary, words identified on sight, and comprehension. They did this by using a combination of eye-tracking devices and standardized tests to study outcomes at each phase of development.
Using state-of-the art eye-tracking technology, which detects even the slightest eye movements, the researchers could closely monitor how the infants shifted their gaze and their attention from one location to another when shown specific words and phrases.endprint
The results showed no differences between the babies exposed to the reading products and the control group on 13 of the 14 assessments. The only assessment that showed a difference was parents beliefs that their baby was learning new words.
36. A new study by New York University shows that ____________.

B. reading products are useless in developing babies reading skills
C. there is no need to develop babies reading skills
D. reading products benefit babies in vocabulary development

39. The researches tested the babiesreading skills by ___________.
A. combining eye-tracking devices and standardized tests

I recently heard a story from Stephen Glenn about a famous research scientist who had made several very important medical breakthroughs. He was being interviewed by a newspaper reporter who asked him why he thought he was able to be so much more creative than the average person. What set him so far apart from others?
He responded that, in his opinion,it all came from an experience with his mother that occurred when he was about two years old. He had been trying to remove a bottle of milk from the refrigerator when he lost his grip(抓不住) on the slippery bottle and it fell, spilling its contents all over the kitchen floor — a real sea of milk!
When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of yelling at him, giving him a lecture or punishing him, she said, “Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! I have rarely seen such a huge puddle of milk. Well, the damage has already been done. Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?”endprint
Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said,“You know, Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, eventually you have to clean it up and restore everything to its proper order. So, how would you like to do that? We could use a sponge, a towel or a mop. Which do you prefer?” He chose the sponge and together they cleaned up the spilled milk.
His mother then said,“You know, what we have here is a failed experiment in how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two tiny hands. Lets go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it.” The little boy learned that if he grasped the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson!
This famous scientist then remarked that it was at that moment that he knew he didnt need to be afraid to make mistakes. Instead, he learned that mistakes were just opportunities for learning something new, which is,after all, what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the experiment “doesnt work,”we usually learn something valuable from it.
Wouldnt it be great if all parents would respond the way Roberts mother responded to him?
41. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce great achievements of Stephen Glenn.
B. To define what is the true meaning of creativity.
C. To arouse readers interest in continuing reading.
D. To inspire the readers to be more creative.
42. Seeing the milk spilt on the kitchen floor,Stephen Glenns mother __________.
A. punished him in a wonderful way
B. decided to dance in the milk with Stephen Glenn
C. asked Stephen Glenn to clean it up immediately
D. asked Stephen Glenn to play in the milk for a while
43. According to the passage, Stephen Glenns mother can be described as __________.
A. kind-hearted B. naughty and creative
C. wise and patient D. ridiculous and silly
44. What did Stephen Glenn learn from the experience as a boy?
A. The best way to take bottles.

以下是与儿童读本的读者反馈。请匹配与它们所对应的介绍内容。
46. Wow, what a great book! My kids love it. It is set up as a series of activities that begin with a question followed by an experiment that answers the question. The fun is in the experiment that answers the question. I think I counted something like 30 different experiments from 5 main science areas (biology, chemistry, physics, planet earth, and the human body). Following each area is a“science fair project” for the kids to use at the next science fair at school! What a great resource it will be for our family in the years to come.
47. This book is a fantastic gift for a child — or, indeed, anyone who struggles to get started on the road to drawing animals. It shows you how to put them together, step by step, to create stylized but character-filled drawings of animals. His selection is eclectic and the little drawings are great: giraffes, porcupines, raccoons, wolves, dogs, cats, lions, tigers...!
48. Recently, I bought this book for my eleven-years-old daughters. Fortunately, before my daughters started reading this book, I read through it, and I was alarmed. I have PhD degree in chemical engineering, and a fairly solid knowledge of astronomy and Earth science. The author seems to be lacking basic understanding of the above mentioned subjects. Both the Earth and the Space sections are riddled with errors. Many answers are erroneous, misleading, incomplete or incomprehensible.
49. I have a four year daughter who is a huge fan of the movie and when this arrived in the mail last week, she sat down for two straight hours, completely consumed. She loves coloring in the pictures and has asked me to help her with some of the more advanced activities like the mazes or letter games. I have been thoroughly impressed with this books ability to inspire her concentration and imagination..
50. I got this for my one year old twins, and they simply love it! They enjoy looking at the bright and colorful photographs of all the animals and this book enables me to make it a fun way of teaching them what different animals look like and the sounds they make. One of my twins always wails when I am finished and I close the book -- she simply wants to look at the book some more! I highly recommend this book for parents with young children.endprint

43. C 从全文可知,在Stephen Glenn洒了牛奶后,妈妈从让他玩牛奶到思考怎么拿牛奶不会掉,一直都是很有耐心,并且循循诱导,因此选择C。
44. B 从最后一段的第一句he didnt need to be afraid to make mistakes可知答案。

According to the WHO, the number of overweight children in developing countries has been increasing rapidly recently, especially in Africa, whose number is twice as large as it was 20 years ago. In 2011, about 43 million children under the age of five were overweight in the world. As is well-known, being overweight may lead to many serious diseases such as heart disease and stroke. Besides diet problems, one of the main reason why children are becoming overweight is that they often travel in cars more than on foot, and take less physical activities. So schools and parents should take measures to balance the childrens diet and lower their in-take of fat and sugar as well as increase their physical activities.
第二节 读写任务
The author saved a girl from drowning on his way to school one day and thus was late for school, for which he was criticized by the teacher, who later apologized to him for misunderstanding him.
After reading the passage, I sing high praises for the author, who rescued the girl in danger regardless of his own safety. He sets a good example to us all and is truly worth learning from.
Like the author, I was once misunderstood by my parents. There was a time when I was on good terms with Alice. We were such close friends that we always studied together. Nevertheless, my parents discouraged us from staying together, thinking that we had fallen in love with each other. But the truth was that we were nothing but close friends! Later on, my parents realized that they had misunderstood me and apologized to me for doing me wrong.
When it comes to being misunderstood by others, I wont lose heart, nor will I lose my temper. Instead, Ill wait with patience and confidence, believing that time will tell and the truth will be out sooner or later.
