Newspapers have tried many things to stop a seemingly nonstop going down in readers. Now France is pushing forward with a novel approach: giving away papers to young readers in an effort to turn them into regular customers. The French government recently made plans of a project called “My Free Newspaper,” under which 18- to 24-year-olds will be offered a free, year-long subscription(订阅)to a newspaper of their choice.
Newspaper readership in France has been especially low among young people. According to a government study, only 10 percent of those aged 15 to 24 read a paid-for newspaper daily in 2013, down from 20 percent ten years earlier.
Emmanuel Schwartzenberg, a former media editor of Le Figaro, the oldest and second-largest national newspaper in France, said he had strong reservations(保留意见)about the government project. At a time when advertising is in steep reduction, he said, newspapers should instead be looking at ways to raise more profits from readers, rather than giving papers away. “This just strengthens the belief that newspapers should be free, which is a very bad idea,” Mr Schwartzenberg said.
French readers, young and old, already have plenty of free choices from which to choose, including newspaper websites and the free papers handed out daily in many city centers. Some bloggers(博主)said the new program might interest the few young people who do already read and buy newspapers.
The French government plans to give publicity to the program with an advertising campaign aimed at young readers and their parents. However, when asked how to attract young readers to the printed press, the government said the essential channel for the ads would be the Internet.
1. Why did the French government decide to set about the free newspaper program?
A. To solve money problem.
B. To help poor young people.
C. To win agreement from youngsters.
D. To get higher newspaper readership.
2. What is Mr Schwartzenbergs attitude toward this program?
A. Angry. B. Anxious.
C. Questioning. D. Appreciative.
3. According to the French government, where would the infor-mation about the free newspaper program most likely be seen?
A. On blogs. B. In magazines.
C. In newspapers. D. On the Internet.
4. Which of the following can be concluded from the passage?
A. Everyone considers the government project creative.
B. Research shows young people have no interest in news.
C. Newspaper readership is much higher in other countries.
D. Providing free papers isnt strong enough to attract readers.

Mr Magic, who helped pave the way for the development of hip-hop culture, died of a heart attack on Friday in Brooklyn at the age of 53. Mr Magic was the first host on profit-making radio to devote(奉献)a program especially to rap when his “Rap Attack” began broadcasting(播放)on WBLS-FM in New York in April, 1983.
“Magic was the guy who carried a flag for that music on the radio, exactly as Freed had done for rock n roll,” said Bill Adler, a former director of publicity for Def Jam Recordings.
In the 1970s Mr Magic was a traveling DJ in Brooklyn, and a few small record companies were starting to release(发行)rap records. He bought some late-night time on a New York radio station, WHBI (now WNWK), to broadcast the new music.
Mr Magics big breakthrough came when WBLS-FM, a larger New York station, decided to take a chance on rap in April 1983. Soon Mr Magic was in a spirited competition with a rap show on the station KISS-FM hosted by a DJ who called himself Kool DJ Red Alert.
Williams, the co-producer of “Rap Attack”, said that in 1984, WBLS wanted to give up the rap show because of a serious lack of audience and offered Mr Magic the chance to host a show playing softer music. “If I stop playing, rap will die,” Mr Magic said, and returned to WHBI. He came back to WBLS the next year and stayed there until 1989. He then worked for WEBB in Baltimore until 1992. In 2000 he left to work for WQHT in New York.
For more than six years, he had been unable to get another show. “I watched Magic become sadder, thinner and more upset,” Williams said. Mr Magic was separated from his wife. He was also survived by his two sons and one daughter.

Dave needed to prepare for Saturdays fishing festival. He went into his room, where he had more than 20 rods and reels(竿和卷轴). In those years he went fishing twice a year at Big Bear, a huge lake in southern California about 7,000 feet up in the mountains.
California tried to improve the fishing industry by starting a Free Fishing Day twice a year, one in June and another in September. Thats enough for Dave. He went mostly because it was a social event with a few friends, not so much to catch fish. Even driving up a twisty two-lane (弯弯曲曲的双车道的)road was worth the festival, let alone the big, beautiful houses and trees that lined the shore of the lake.
Preparing was a project in itself. Dave had even created a computer file named Fishing Festival. It was a checklist of 45 things to take to Big Bear. He took two rods, because on Free Fishing Day you were allowed to fish with two rods instead of the usual one rod. He took a sweatshirt, jeans, two pairs of socks, a heavy jacket, winter gloves, and a scarf. He also took shorts, a T-shirt, sunglasses, a big hat, and a lightweight raincoat. If you go to Big Bear in June, youd better be prepared for hotness or cold, rain or shine.
He prepared a couple of magazines to read just in case the fish werent biting. He and his friends joked that the fish were always biting—in the spot you just left or the spot you were headed for.
After about an hour and a half, Dave had gathered all the things on his list into a clean pile next to his door. He went to bed knowing that tomorrows weather and fishing were unpredictable, but the good time with his friends was a given.

The report came to the British on May 21, 1941. The German battleship Bismarck, the most powerful warship in the world, was moving out into the Atlantic Ocean. Her task: to destroy the ships carrying supplies from the United States to the war-torn(受战争严重破坏的)England. The British had feared such a task. No warship they had could match the Bismarck in speed or in firepower. The Bismarck had eight 15-inch guns and 81 smaller guns. She could move at 30 nautical mile(海里)an hour. She was believed to be unsinkable. However, the British had to sink her. They sent out a task force headed by their best battleship Hood to hunt down the Bismarck. On May 24, the Hood found the Bismarck.
It was a meeting that the German commander Luetjens did not want to see. His orders were to destroy the British ships that were carrying supplies, but to stay away from a fight with British warships.
The battle didnt last long. The Bismarcks first torpedo (鱼雷)hit the Hood, which went down taking all but three of her 1,419 men with her.
But in the fight, the Bismarck was slightly damaged. Her commander decided to run for repairs to France, which had at that time been taken by the Germans. The British force followed her. However, because of the Bismarcks speed and the heavy fog, they lost sight of her.
For two days, every British ship in the Atlantic tried to find the Bismarck, but with no success. Finally, she was sighted by a plane from Ireland. Trying to slow the Bismarck down so that their ships could catch up with her, the British fired at her from the air. The Bismarck was hit.
On the morning of May 27, the last battle was fought. Four British ships fired on the Bismarck, and she was finally sunk.

Long ago, the Roman historian Comelius Tacitus observed that “the desire for fame is the last thrown away even by the wise”. But celebrity mania(名人热)is at new heights at the turn of the century.
Todays media often features celebrities—from Hollywood and Silicon Valley to Wall Street and Washington—beautifying a few rich and powerful Americans.
Time magazine is now trying to sum up the past 100 years by conducting an Internet poll(民意调查)to identify the
“Person of the Century.” The absurdity(荒谬)of the issue is strengthened when you consider that the poll is just advisory: The guys who run Time will determine the Person of the Century. “Your suggestions will be considered by the editors, who will make the final choice,” Times website tells readers.
The question that Time says it seeks to answer—“Who has had the greatest effect on the 20th century?” —begs a deeper question. Who is the judge? The nations largest news weekly has already nailed down its answer to that question.
Some earnest souls associated with a Florida-based environmental group called Lovearth are attempting to make advertisements for positive ends. “Were trying to get like-minded people together to use Time magazine for our own good,” the organizations director, Mark Elsis, told me. A mass-distributed Internet message from Lovearth says, “Vote for John Lennon in Times Person of the Century poll.”
Hows John Lennon doing in the most-influential-of-the-century poll brought to us by Time? In early July, Lovearth reported that “John passed Henry Ford and has moved up from 11th to 10th place. Next week, he should overtake President Ronald Reagan and move up to 9th place.”
But somehow, I question that John Lennon has any chance of becoming Time magazines Person of the Century.

“We started as a group of friends with the same problem: difficulty in our personal life to manage our time, being always in a hurry.” This thought was recently offered by Bruno to explain the origin of The Art of Living Slowly, an organization that he founded two years ago, with his wife, Ella.
Bruno and Ella said they decided to draw more peoples attention to the overlooked idea that “Time is wealth”. Last year, they created a new holiday, the first Global Day of Slow Living. Despite(尽管)its ambitious(雄心勃勃的)name, the event was limited almost completely to Italy, where the couple organized a number of events: a reverse bicycle race in which the last rider was said to be the winner; an afternoon of grandfathers reading poetry to children, etc.
One Monday in late February, the couple staged a New York version of the Day of Slow Living. “It has to be a Monday, the worst day to try to slow down.” Bruno explained. Bruno was wearing a police cap, mirrored sunglasses, and a sandwich board stating, “Caution! Speed-walking camera is in action!” He flagged down passers-by and handed them postcards printed with fourteen “slowmandments”. For example, No. 4: Write your text message on your cellphone with no symbols and get in the habit of starting with “Dear...”; No.7: Avoid being so busy that you dont have time for yourself. Bruno told the passers-by to read them once a day and keep the doctor away.
Many said, “I cant do this. New York is too fast.” Bruno admitted. But many stopped, they read and said. “This one is good for me, because trying to slow down is like trying to stop smoking.”
When asked about their plans for the future, Bruno and Ella looked at each other and shouted many times the name of the city they had chosen for next years Global Day of Slow Living, “Tokyo!”

Not everyone thinks laughter is the best medicine, but it seems to help. Scientists conducted a study on diabetes(糖尿病)patients to test this idea.
Researchers divided 20 high-risk diabetes patients into two groups. Both groups were given standard diabetes medicine. The laughter group (Group L) viewed 30 minutes of humor of their choosing, while the control group (Group C) did not. This went on for a year.
By two months into the study, the patients in the laughter group had a lower level of the hormone epinephrine(荷尔蒙肾上腺素)which is considered to be a measure of stress. After 12 months, HDL cholesterol had risen by 26 percent in Group L but only by 3 percent in Group C. In another measure, C-reactive proteins, a marker of heart disease, dropped by 66 percent in Group L but only by 26 percent in Group C.
“The doctors believe that there is a physical change brought about by positive emotions,” said study leader Lee Berk of Loma Linda University. Other research has also found that humor makes us more hopeful. “Still, more study is needed to determine what these results mean,” Berk said. The research by Berk found that humor can bring about changes in body chemistry. The research result will be presented this month at a meeting in the US. Researches at the University of Maryland School of Medicine showed that laughter causes the inner lining of blood vessels(血管)to expand, increasing blood flow in a way thought to be healthy.
“Lifestyle choices have an important effect on health and these are choices which we and patients should pay attention to,” Berk said in a statement.
