Glimpses of Chinese Workers

China Pictorial 2013年10期

Within six decades after the founding of the Peoples Republic of China in 1949, the nation had completed the industrialization process that lasted nearly 200 years in the West. It transformed from a poverty-stricken land into the workshop of the world, with its products distributed around the globe. Even before the excitement brought by towering smokestacks and crisscrossing rails linking industrial bases of the Northeast abates, Chinese people are already worrying about the plight of laid-off workers. As some remain proud that Chinese-made products can be found in every corner of the world, others are already calling for “creation in China.”

Over the past six decades, many photographers focused lenses on Chinese factories and workers, recording the countrys past industrialization glory and the generations of diligent, persistent workers.

On September 15, 2013, China Shenyang (Tiexi) International Industrial Photography Exhibition opened at the Industrial Museum of China in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province. These images document Chinas industrial development of the past half century more accurately than an endless stream of words.
