Many mobile phone and BlackBerry addicts(上瘾者)report feeling shakes when there are none, or feeling as if theyre wearing a cell phone when theyre not.

The first time it happened to Jonathan Zaback, manager at the public relations company Burson-Marsteller, he was out with friends and showing off his new BlackBerry.

“While they were looking at it, I felt this shake on my side. I reached down to get it and realized there was no BlackBerry there.”

Zaback, who said he keeps his BlackBerry by his bed while he sleeps, checks it if he gets up in the middle of the night and wakes to an alarm on the BlackBerry each day, said this didnt worry him.

Some users compare the feeling to a phantom limb(幻肢痛), which Merriam-Websters medical dictionary defines as “an often painful sensation of the presence of a limb that has been cut off ”.

“Even when I dont have the BlackBerry physically on, I do find myself adjusting my position when I sit to hold it,” said Dawn Mena, an independent technology consultant. “I also laugh at myself as I reach to take it and find out I dont even have it on.”

Research in the area is short, but theories are rich about the phenomenon, which has been called “mobile phone disease” or “wrong ringing feel”. Some evidence suggests “people feel the phone is part of them” and “theyre not whole without their phones”.

“Since the phones connect them to the world,” said B.J. Fogg, director of research and design at Stanford Universitys Persuasive Technology Lab. “As human beings, were so tapped into our community and responsiveness to whats going on. Were so afraid of the threat of lonliness and rejection. Wed rather make a mistake than miss a call,” he said. “Our brain is going to be scanning to see if we have to respond socially to someone.”

Lie in bed, by an open window, and listen. “No air conditioning, how can you sleep?” a friend asks, horrified. I tell her my family has decided to shut the air conditioner off and reduce our electric bill. On this first night of our cost-cutting plan, its only 85 degrees. Were going to suffer, but the three kids complain anyway.

Theyve grown up in 72-degree comfort, protected from the world outside. “Its too hot to sleep,” my 13-year-old daughter complains. “Im about to die from this heat,” her brother complains down the hall. “Just try it tonight,” I tell them. In truth Im too tired to turn for long. My face is sweaty, but I lie quietly listening to the cricket choirs (合唱)outside that remind me of childhood.

The neighbors dog howls. Probably a passing squirrel (松鼠). Its been years since I took the time to really listen to the night.

I think about grandma, who lived to 92 and still helped with my moms gardening until just a few weeks before she died. And then, Im back there at her house in the summer heat of my childhood. I moved my pillow to the foot of grandmas bed and turned my face towards the open window. I turned the pillow, hunting for the cooler side. Grandma saw me turn over

and over. “If you just watch for the breeze,” she said, “youll cool off and fall asleep.”

I stare at the filmy white curtain, willing it to move. Lying still, waiting, I suddenly notice the life outside the window. The bug chorus. Neighbors, sitting late on the porch(门廊), speak in unclear words that calm me.

“Mom, did you hear that?” my seven-year-old son cries. “I think it was an owl(猫头鹰)family.”

“Probably,” I tell him. “Just keep listening.”

Without the working air conditioner, the house is peaceful, and the natural night noises seem close enough to touch. I hope Im awake tonight when the first breeze comes in.
