There were no weapons on board or concerns about terrorism, but an American Eagle flight about to take off from the Raleigh-Durham, airport turned back to its gate on Monday to remove two passengers.

The criminals? An upset, autistic(自闭症)child and his mother.

By all accounts, the two-year-old Jarret Farrell wasnt a happy traveler. But his mother, Janice Farrell, who said she tried everything to calm her son, believed there was no reason for the airline to kick them off the plane.

The airline disagreed, saying they were removed mainly because Janice Farrell kept her carry-on bag on the floor in front of her seat, but that Jarrets behavior added to the tense situation.

“The child had been crying and screaming uncontrollably, to the point where the childs well being was in question,” American Airlines, the parent company of American Eagle, said in a statement. “Though, ultimately the parents violation of regulations was the cause for removal, both situations contributed to an uncomfortable and potentially unsafe atmosphere for our passengers and staff.”

But Farrell said that she allowed the flight attendant(服务人员)to place her bag in an overhead separate section. And, Farrell said even though she explained Jarrets autism to the flight staff, they only made the situation worse by scolding and shouting at the child.

“The flight attendant kept coming over and pulling his seatbelt to make it tighter, ‘This has to stay tight. And then he was moving around and trying to get out of his seatbelt. And she kept coming over, scolding him and yelling at him,” Farrell claimed.

Farrell said she started crying then, which just made Jarrets behavior worse. “He just melted down. He saw me getting upset. He was upset. He was on the floor rolling around,” Farrell added.

Thats when the pilot turned the plane around and headed back to the terminal, where Farrell and her son were sent off the plane.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City. I pumped the tank full, stood in line at the cash register(收银机), and said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.

I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from my pipe. I pulled over and wondered what I should do.

A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friends. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.

I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas package from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.

Years later, I drove through a foggy morning to a meeting in a nearby town. In late afternoon, I returned to my car and found that Id left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership(经销商)was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen relaxing in a showroom empty of customers. I explained to them my trouble.

They quickly fixed my car and would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks.

I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say “thank you”, and it meant a lot, he said.

How to Make the Most of Your Time

Time arrangement is important in our daily life. There never seems to be enough hours in the day to do all you need to do. Here are some tips that might be of some help to you.

● Set up a plan

Go for a week at a time, and prioritize the most important ones, including the things you want to do. Give attention to the things that are important to you.

● Control your anxiety

No matter what kind of pressure is fixed on you, try to keep cool. Anxiety can result in an early breakdown, which is clearly counter-productive when you have a list of things to do. Its easier to take a 10-minute break and cool off than work all week with built-up anxiety.

● Shut your door

When working under a plan, perform your important tasks with your door shut to get them done. You will get a better quality of time to get what needs to be done done.

● Focus on one thing at a time

Forget trying doing many things at a time! You will lose concentration, and it will take you longer to do what you set out to do.

● Just say “no”

If you are always been bothered, and you really dont have the time to help out, just say “no”. You are only one person, and you cant save the world by yourself!

● Stop wasting time on the phone

While talking on the phone, keep your conversations short and to the point, and you will lose much less time.

● Be realistic

You can only do what you can do. Dont set out to do the impossible. Do your best, but keep realistic goals of yourself.

●Relax

The most important thing is to remember to take time to relax, and regroup. You need a break every now and then to keep working. Even if its a 10-minute walk, get away from your list and get refreshed.

As families today get busier and busier, it is important to take care of your own mental health to keep things on track. Dont delay. Get your life in order now!

58. What does the underlined word “prioritize” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Get rid of something. B. Choose things carefully.

C. Arrange things by importance. D. Recognize the differences.

59. Which of the followings is true about making the most of time?

A. Concentrate on different things at a time.

B. Refusing to help others during work is impolite.

C. Being anxious may result in a whole breakdown.

D. Know well what goals can be achieved.

60. The most important thing one should remember is to ___ .

A. forget about relaxing B. do the work immediately

C. take care of mental health D. relax and regroup

61. By writing the passage, the author wants to ___ .

C. suggest spending more time on job D. share time management skills

D

Whos in control of your life? Whos pulling your strings? For the majority of us, its other people—society, workmates, friends, or family. We learned this way of operating when we were very young, of course. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us. As Oscar Wilde puts it, “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone elses opinions. Their lives are a copy.”

So when people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good. We long for this good feeling like a drug—we enjoy it and seek it out wherever we can. Therefore, we are so eager for the approval(赞同)of others that we live an unhappy and limited life, failing to do the things we really want to.

But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedom—the freedom to be ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think. People have their own things to do, and they come with their own baggage and in the end, theyre more interested in themselves than in you. Whats more, if we try to live by the opinions of others, we will build our life on sinking sand. Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting tired out and probably pleasing no one in the end.

So how can we take back control? I think theres only one way—make a wise decision to stop caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values—not values forced by others to accept, but born values which come from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others, we will live a more effective, purposeful and happy life.

62. What Oscar Wilde says implies that most people ___ .

A. try to please others B. like to live as others do

C. care too much about others opinions D. fail to learn from others in the way of life

63. According to the text, we can learn that those who are eager for approval of others ___ .

A. are easily satisfied with themselves B. are able to do things they like to

C. tend to be controlled by others D. have a happy life

64. From Paragraph 3 we can infer that the author asks us to ___ .

A. be independent B. be against others

C. be free to express opinions D. be careful with our own matters

65. The main purpose of the author writing the text is to ___ .

A. tell us that different people have different ideas B. teach us how to better understand people

C. show us many people are dishonest D. advise us on how to live

第Ⅱ卷(非选择题,共50分)

第四部分 写作(共三节,满分50分)

第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

阅读下面短文并按照题目要求用英语回答问题(请注意每题词数要求)。

Hocus-pocus sounds magical, doesnt it? And the word comes from the world of magic playing in Medieval(中世纪)Europe. In the dictionary Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, hocus-pocus is explained this way: a method or belief that you think is based on false ideas, eg He thinks psychology is a lot of hocus-pocus.

Im afraid this explanation isnt as interesting as the sounding of the word itself. But then again, the dictionary I mentioned is a dictionary for beginners. One cant expect much from it when it comes to such an interesting word as hocus-pocus. The Merriam-Webster dictionary online, on the other hand, gives a more detailed explanation: (1) sleight of hand; (2) nonsense used especially to hide tricks. And it gives the origin of the word: probably from hocus pocus, imitation of a Latin phrase used by magicians.

This explanation gets to the basic nature of hocus-pocus—exotic(外来的)but meaningless talk by the magician to fool the audience. Watch any magician at work and well notice that he sometimes talks constantly while performing tricks, using hocus-pocus, such as ear-catching words, eye-catching hand or body movements, to distract our attention while he gets a trick done.

Hocus-pocus shows the ridiculous nature of the magicians talk on stage. And it was introduced into the English language probably just on the strength of the rhyming sound of it. Hocus-pocus, lovely.

Well, knowing its origin which is from performing magicians in Europe, Im sure you will find hocus-pocus easier to remember. Youll also learn where to put it into use.

66. Where does the word “hocus-pocus” come from? (within 8 words)

67. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, where does the word “hocus-pocus”come from? (within 10 words)

68. What is the purpose for a magician to use hocus-pocus? (within 5 words)

69. Why was hocus-pocus introduced into the English language? (within 12 words)

70. In the origin of the word, who uses it most? (1 word )
