In June 2009 Fernando Chui Sai On, former Secretary for Social and Cultural Affairs of Macau declared himself the sole candidate for Macaus Chief Executive Election. He was elected through 286 nominations from Macaus 300 – member election committee, most with direct ties to Beijing. On July 26, the official “election day,” the 300 committee members will “vote” with only one name on the ballot, and Fernando Chui Sai On will assume his new role as Chief Executive of Macau.

Choi resigned from the secretary post on June 12 and took part in the third Macaus Chief Executive Election. He was born in Macau in 1957. His Choi family was one of three biggest families in Macau. He got the bachelors degree in City Hygiene Administration from California State University and doctor degree in Public Hygiene at Oklahoma State University. He was the registered member of the American Association of Public Hygiene and the registered member of the American Association for the Management of Medical Affairs. In 1999 he was appointed the Secretary for Social and Cultural Affairs and in 2004 he took the post again.

Financial Times said that the Chinese government is glad with this result. In recent years, the central government of China is always worried about the “political stability” of Macau and Hong Kong.
