Florence Nightingale was born in a rich family. When she was young she took lessons in music and drawing, and read great books. She also traveled a great deal with her mother and father.

As a child she felt that visiting sick people was both a duty and a pleasure. She enjoyed helping them.

At last mind was made up. “Im going to be a nurse,” she decided.

“Nursing isnt the right work for a lady,” her father told her.

“Then I will make it so,” she smiled. And she went to learn nursing in Germany and France. When she returned to England, Florence started a nursing home. During the Crimean War in 1854 she went with a group of thirty-eight nurses to the front hospitals. What they saw there was terrible. Dirt and death were everywhere to be seen and smelled. The officer there did not want any woman to tell him how to run a hospital, either. But the brave nurse went to work.

Florence used her own money and some from friends to buy clothes, beds, medicine and food. Her only pay was in smiles from the lips of dying soldiers. But they were more than enough for this kind woman.

After she returned to England, she was honored for her services by Queen Victoria. But Florence said that her work had just begun. She raised money to build the Nightingale Home for Nurses in London. She also wrote a book on public health, which was printed in several countries.

Two Letters

Letter A

Dear Etty Kit,

My roommates family want me to have thanksgiving dinner with them in their home. I accepted the invitation, and Im excited about going, but Im a little worried about it, too. The social customs in my country are very different from those here, so Im a little afraid of making mistakes.

Should I bring a gift, such as candy or flowers? Should I arrive on time or a little late? At the dinner table, how can I know which fork or knife to use? How can I let the family know that Im thankful for their kindness?

Confused

Letter B

Dear Confused,

Its a good idea to bring a small gift when you go to a dinner party. Flowers are always nice, or you might bring a bottle of wine if you know that the family drink it.

You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late. Dont get there early. If youre going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them.

Try to be free at the dinner table. If you dont know about choosing the correct fork, knife, or spoon, just watch the other people, and follow them. If you still have no idea of what to do, dont be shy about asking the person next to you. Its better to ask than to be quietly uncomfortable and nervous.

If you like the food, say so. Of course, youll thank the host and hostess for the meal and for their kindness. Its also a good idea to send a card or thank-you note the day after.

Dancer Aly Rose says she has had many exciting moments in China.

While she was taking a Chinese language exam in the southwestern city of Kunming in 1999, a brick flew in through a window. It had been thrown at her by some angry person who hated Americans.

“I was really scared,” said the Texas native. “I thought I was close to this country, but I had become an enemy somehow.” She decided to stay, however, and now calls China home.

In 2002, Rose became the first Westerner to finish school from the Beijing Dance Academy, one of Asias finest. Her teachers never used her name. Instead, they called her “Little American Girl”. “In China I didnt exist(存在) as myself. I existed as a country,” once she said.

Rose, in her early 30s, has succeeded here. She has won high praises and prizes for her dance. She even brought Broadway to China as choreographer(舞蹈编导) for Lady in the Dark, the first Broadway musical produced on a Chinese stage.

Limitations on artistic freedom sometimes leave Rose feeling as if she is“dancing with a ball and chain”. But she values the chance to work in partnership with Chinese dancers and to create “things that have never been seen before”. “Living in China is like stepping on another planet and breathing a new type of air.
