W: Excuse me, Mr Johnson. I’m wondering if I can ask your advice about my school paper.

W: Dr Clinton, when did you have the idea of helping cancer patients?
M: Actually, I didn’t have any idea when I left high school at the age of 16. Then I found a job in a small medical lab. I never dreamed I would help save people’s lives.
W: Then what caused your change?
M: I love lab work, so I went back to school. After ten years, I got my PhD. Then I worked at a medical company, where I began the research on a medicine to treat lung cancer patients. Now I have been here for 8 years. For me, a drug saves more than life. It can save a family.
W: I couldn’t agree more with you.
Text 8
W: Henry, are you going to Mandy’s party or to the cinema tonight?
M: Neither, I’m going to stay at home and study. My final exam is coming up next week.
W: Is it going to be difficult?
M: It will be harder than the mid-term exam. I’m sure.
W: Was that one difficult?
M: It was the most difficult exam I’ve ever had.
W: Then maybe this one will be easier.
M: Well, I’m going to spend more time studying for it than I did for the mid-term exam.
W: What are you going to do after the exam?
M: I don’t know. Maybe I’ll look for a better job.
W: What’s the matter with this job?
M: It isn’t the worst job in the world, but it isn’t the best job, either.
W: Do you want to work for a bigger company?
M: I want to get ahead. I want to make more money.

W: Hello, Ben. You are getting ready for tomorrow’s lessons, aren’t you?
M: Yes. I’m a bit nervous. I have no idea what’ll happen in class and how I’ll get along with my classmates.
W: I understand how you’re feeling. Just take it easy. You’ll make a lot of new friends very soon.
M: Thank you. I’ll try my best to get used to my new school life as soon as possible. By the way, what time does the first class begin?
W: At 8 o’clock. But before that we have 5 minutes to hand in homework and then 15 minutes for morning reading.
M: So we must get to school before 7:40, right?
W: Right.
M: How long does each class last?
W: 45 minutes, I think, with a 10 minutes’ break.
M: Well, I hear that lunchtime is nearly 12 o’clock and I’ll be starving by then.
W: Don’t worry. During the break after the second class we can buy something to eat.
M: That’s good.

Hello, everybody. I’m Teresa Stone. I’m so glad to meet you here. Today I’m going to share my travelling experience with you.
As a photographer, I have always loved to travel. The first place I visited was Africa. I loved the excitement of seeing animals run freely in the wild. It was so much fun. I still remember the adventure of camping when I was on Safari. Besides Africa, I have visited many other lands, such as Spain, Italy, Scotland, Japan and Thailand. People often ask me why I love to travel. How couldn’t anyone love travelling? There is such an attraction in seeing new things, meeting new people and tasting new foods. However, I will admit travelling is very expensive. There are so many costs of travelling. I have to pay for the hotel room and food. In addition, tourist attractions are usually expensive. Although I complain about the high cost of travelling, I wouldn’t choose to spend my money any other ways.

W: I am thinking of calling on Alice. I haven’t seen her for a long time. What about you?

M: All right. We can play games, watch TV and enjoy ourselves a lot.
W: Remember, Amy has just given birth to a baby and she needs rest. So we cannot make much noise.
M: Yes, that’s right.

W: My son is going to have his 15th birthday party at home. I’d like to get him a gift.
M: What price of gift are you interested in? We’ll need to know that before we begin looking.
W: Well, I usually spend about 20 dollars on a gift. Do you have anything nice for that price?
M: How about a pen and a pencil box?
W: No. Well, he’s good enough to write a book himself. And he’s also a good player of PC games.

M: Well, did you ever get together?
W: Yes, but it’s a wonder that we did. I had given up waiting and had gone inside the women’s clothing department. She had done the same thing. We met by accident.
M: Did you get what you wanted? I remember you said you wanted to get a sweater or a skirt.
W: Neither. I wanted a T-shirt. But by that time, the ones on sale were all gone. So I bought one at the regular price. And you know what? Vicky didn’t buy anything!

We’ll be picking you up from your hotel at seven o’clock tomorrow morning. Then we’ll drive around the south of the island. Our first stop is Peach Point, where there is a beautiful view of the water below. And then we’ll visit a small ice cream factory, where you can see our delicious ice cream being made. We then continue around the island enjoying beautiful views of the Atlantic coast. And we’ll stop for a special Caribbean lunch at a nice seaside cafe. After lunch, we’ll head north, stopping at a beach. So you need to take your swimsuit and sunglasses. And finally we’ll go to the nature park, where you can see tigers and monkeys. W: You’ve been watching that silly series for 2 hours. I really hate to ask, but have you cleaned your own bedroom?
M: Here we go again. What’s the point of asking again and again?
W: If you don’t finish it, no allowance for this week. You’d better finish it before dinner.
M: OK, I will.
W: And another thing—you ought to know better than to make a mess on the floor.
M: Don’t worry. I’ll clean it up in a minute.

M: Why are you so angry with Alan?
W: You know we bought an iPad about two weeks ago?

M: That is too bad.
W: Just now I received his head teacher’s phone call, telling me that he failed in the exam.
M: My God! You should do something about it!
W: Yeah. I told him not to use the iPad during the weekdays.
M: Is he going to follow your advice?
W: You know kids; whatever their parents say just goes in one ear and out the other. So I wonder if you could talk to him. You are his favorite cousin, and your advice may work.

W: What’s your ideal job in the future?
M: I want to be an accountant very much. But it is very hard to get a certificate. And the company always requires an experienced accountant.
W: Yeah, experience is a key element for finding a job. Now that we are inexperienced, we should be more careful and work harder.
M: Yes. Dorris, what about you?
W: I want to enter the foreign companies, so before graduation, I have to improve my English. That’s very important for a successful job interview.
M: Do you always want to work in the foreign companies?
W: No, I just want to accumulate some useful experience there.
M: So will you start your own business then?
W: Yes, you said it. I want to do my own business. But before that, some social experience and clients are necessary.
M: You are always smart!
W: Thank you! And at that time you can also come to my company.
M: Yeah.
W: You’ll be my personal assistant.
M: Personal assistant? I don’t think you’ll be able to afford me.

In late autumn and winter, this park is the best place for bird watching. School teachers like to bring children here and they just love it! Now our bus is driving around the lake. W: Oh, here it is—all of the money from the cash register.
M: That is too little. Now give me your wallet.
W: All right, here you are.
M: Good. Now, give me a bottle of wine from up there on the shelf.

W: Yes, I have. I did that yesterday afternoon.
M: And he’s met the marketing manager?
W: Yes, they met in the morning and they had lunch together.

W: I know, but that’s only because I didn’t have any! No, you’re right. I did go into banking for about six months, but I found it boring.
M: Boring?
W: You know, working with bits of paper the whole time! I quit and got a job as a saleswoman. I’m now working for a company, selling land. It gets me out of office and I do spend most of my time dealing with people. How about you?
M: I’m busy doing my doctor’s degree. I hope I can settle down and get a job soon.
W: Of course you will. Do you still see anyone from school? Whatever happened to Bob and Sarah?
M: Oh, they’ve gone back to Britain.
Text 10
Good morning, everyone. My name is Helen Green. Now, I’d like to say something about my job. Last year I worked as a secretary to the general manager of a large company in our town. I was happy and satisfied with my job. Then suddenly our company was hit by economic troubles. Most of the employees knew nothing about it until one day we were told that we had to leave. Although I was very sad and worried, I soon overcame the shock. I had worked for many years and I knew how to do my job well. I felt quite confident that I would have little difficulty in quickly finding a similar position with another company before long. I applied for several jobs. But I was told that I was too experienced and they couldn’t pay me the high salary I had earned before. I had been out of a job for almost two months. Then I saw a small advertisement in the newspaper one evening. A shopkeeper was wanted. I realized that I had no choice but to accept what was offered to me. However, I’m not tired of my present job because I’m still working. What about you? Do you like your jobs?

W: Sure. What’s wrong?
M: Well, right now, my salary isn’t enough to support me and my family.

M: I would like a 5% raise, if possible.
W: All right, I’ll think this over and get back to you, OK?
M: Certainly! Thanks for your time.
Text 7
W: Excuse me, is this seat taken?

W: Really? What is your seat number?
M: No. 3 in the fourth row. And you?

W: I hope he waits on us soon. I have a class at two o’clock.
M: Me, too. I recognize that English book. You must be a student at the English Language Center.
W: Yeah. I’m in the third course. Are you studying there too?
M: Yes, I’m in the fourth course. I took the third course last month.
W: I just came here two weeks ago. Do you like the institute?
M: It’s pretty good. I think I’ve learned a lot of English so far.
W: Yeah. I only wish the classes were a little smaller, though, because we don’t get enough chance to talk. But I like my teachers a lot.
M: How long are you going to be here?
W: I guess a year, but sometimes I feel like going home tomorrow.
M: You’ll get used to it. Oh, here comes the waiter. I’m starving!
Text 9
M: What do you think of studying abroad?
W: I think it’s a great idea. Are you planning to go abroad?
M: Yes, I hope so. I am studying for my IELTS right now, you know, International English Language Testing System.
W: Sure. Which country do you want to go to?
M: I’d like to study in the UK, but it’s really expensive. It will be almost three times higher than before.
W: Have you applied to any schools there?
M: Yes, I received a conditional offer from Oxford University the other day.
W: Congratulations! Can you get an unconditional offer?
M: I have to get an IELTS score of 7.5 overall.
W: If you study hard, I don’t see why you wouldn’t.
M: Surely I have to work hard.
W: Have you received any other offers?
M: I was also accepted into Yale University and Sydney University.
W: The cost of living is lowest in America. But if you go to Oxford University, you’ll probably be able to get any job you want in the future.
M: I just can’t decide where to go. It’s not an easy decision to make.
Text 10
There’s a holiday next week and I can’t decide what to do.
Last year I went north to the mountains. Everything was beautiful, but it is too cold this time of year. And it’s really too far to go for a short holiday. I have decided that this is not a good time to go to the mountains. But I do want to go some place.
Perhaps this would be a good chance to go to the beach. I like to go for walks along the seashore in the warm sunshine and watch the water. It’s only about eighty miles and I can drive there in over an hour. After thinking it over, I guess I’ll plan to go to the beach next week.
Oh, here’s a letter from Ben. He says he is going to his house in the mountains for the holidays next week, and he wants me to go with him. After giving it some more thought, I guess it wasn’t really too cold last year, and perhaps it might rain at the seashore and then I wouldn’t enjoy it at all. The mountains are only 300 miles away. I think I’ll write to Ben right now and tell him I’ll go with him.

W: Harry, have you been using my iPod again?
M: Alice! Don’t get so annoyed.
W: And my new headphones, too?
M: Well, OK, I was going to put them back. What’s the big deal?
W: The big deal is that it is so disrespectful to take things without asking.
M: Well, how about you? You’re always borrowing my sweaters, jumpers and stuff.
W: Yeah, well, that’s different.
M: I don’t think so.
Text 7
W: Lost and Found. What can I do for you?
M: I left my bag on a subway train this morning.
W: Well, we received thirty bags from the subway company today. What color is yours?
M: It’s black and it’s made of leather.
W: Hmm... we’ve got eleven here. Is it big or small?
M: It’s not big.
W: Hmm... we have four here. Can you tell me the contents of it? Is there any money in it?
M: No. There’s a white Parker pen, a number of business cards and my ID card!
W: Your ID card? Could you give me your name, please?
M: Leo Johnson.
W: Well, I think we have your bag here.

M: Jamie, you look stressed out. What’s wrong?
W: I have to decide my major, and I’m still undecided.
M: I thought you were majoring in theater. Didn’t you say you wanted to be the next Angelina Jolie?
W: Yeah, but I have changed my mind and started taking psychology classes.
M: Well, why don’t you do that?
W: I would, but I don’t know. I’m taking a really great physics class this semester. I totally love it.
M: Then why not do physics?
W: So I could be the next Albert Einstein, right? I don’t know about that, either. I also want to take some French classes. Although, if I take French, then I can’t really take the physics. And I mean, theater still is fun.

W: How many hours do you spend on the Internet every day?
M: I spend about l to 3 on a school day working and probably about half an hour just surfing. And on a weekend, I would spend about 2 to 10 hours working and about two hours surfing. I try to limit my time. I don’t want to get addicted to the Internet.
W: You do all the design work?
M: Yes. And my father handles the marketing. And if you go to any major search engine, and type in “web-designing company”, we will come in the top 10.
W: And do you know those marketing things?
M: My father is teaching me, so I don’t have to be dependent on anybody.
W: What would you do if the staff don’t treat you as a grown-up?
M: I simply let them go. You can’t do business with someone who doesn’t take you seriously.

Good morning, everyone. I’m Dr Tony. Today I’m going to talk about how to plan a schedule with you. Planning a schedule that includes time for studies, sports, part-time work and free time can be a challenge. The good way to start is to make a plan for each day of the week and then try to balance your time so you can include everything. Here are some guidelines that may help you.
First, we start with the twenty-four hours we all have every day. If we take out eight hours for our sleep time, that leaves sixteen hours to divide among the other activities. Attendance at school takes about six hours and homework about two, for a total of eight. That leaves us eight hours for sports, work and free time. Remember, those guidelines are flexible and you must adjust them to your particular needs.
Weekends are different since we don’t have to attend school. Here we can usually focus on certain activities such as sports or part-time work and free time. We can see our friends and spend more time with our family.
If you make a schedule and try to keep to it, you will soon develop the habit of doing each task during its planned time and will be satisfied that you can comfortably do everything you have to do.

W: Yes. I live about sixty miles away, but it doesn’t seem that far. The road isn’t bad, and there’s not much traffic.

W: Yes, but I’m sorry to tell you the flight is delayed because of rain. Please wait for further notice.

W: What? You want to leave? You’re having a great time here!
M: Yes, I am. But I don’t belong here. I want to go back home next week. I have made up my mind.
W: Well, if I can’t change your mind, I will make you a huge feast before you go! Is this Sunday all right?
M: I’m free at the weekend. If it’s anything like your mom’s birthday feast, then that’s a lot of work. I don’t want to bring you that much trouble.
W: No trouble at all.
Text 7
W: What do you do in your free time, Michael? I heard you were good at the piano, right?
M: Not piano. I like playing the violin. I started playing it when I was seven or eight years old. I didn’t want to learn it but my mother forced me to do that. And now I’m very fond of it. I really thank my mom. Anyway, she makes me create a big hobby.
W: That’s right. Maybe you could play a song for me sometime.
M: What about you? What’s your favorite pastime?
W: Drawing. I am very into it. I often go to the park over weekends, and I will draw many pictures there: the river, the people, the woods. Anything I find attractive in the park will be on my paper. I want to be a painter one day.
M: That’s a big dream. I hope you can achieve it in the future.
W: Thanks very much.

M: Not so good.
W: What’s the matter?
M: You know I am a green hand. Very few patients dare to see me.
W: I’m sorry to hear that.
M: Julia, I would rather be a musician. I like music, you know.
W: Dan, never give up, our mother always tells us.
M: But it’s hard!
W: Don’t lose heart. Oh, I remember I have interviewed a famous dentist. He practiced skills with the help of a robot at first.
M: Really?
W: Yes. The robot can act as a model for young dentists.
M: That sounds interesting. I want to have a try. But how can I get it?
W: Well, I’ll contact him for you.
M: Thank you.

W: Why? We just walked 5 km, and it is only half of the journey.
M: I have never walked such a long distance for several years.
W: How often do you take exercise?
M: I can’t remember when the last time I took exercise is. And I always hurry on with my bus in the morning. I have no time for doing it.
W: Oh, you should take exercise regularly and should have a well-balanced diet. I know you always go to bed after midnight, even more late. This is not a good habit.
M: You seem my mother at this moment.
W: No, I talk to you because I know that having good health is an important condition that you can compete with others in your work.
M: OK, let’s go on. I don’t want to sit here and listen to your long speech.
W: Hey, come on. I just can’t stand your lifestyle. Taking exercise for an hour every day is good for your health.

Many years ago, Manhattan Island, which is a part of the great city of New York, was covered with forest. Along its shores were small Indian villages. In fact, Indians were the only people on the island until 1609. In the spring of that year, Henry Hudson, a famous sea captain, arrived there. He was trying to find a short way to the Far East for Dutch traders. His ship was very small. It was only about the size of one of the lifeboats you see on modern ocean liners today. Of course, Henry Hudson did not find a shorter way to the Far East. Instead he reached the shores of North America. He came to the mouth of the large waterway now called the Hudson River.
As he came near to the shore, he saw an Indian village. The Indians seemed friendly. They even came out to meet the ship and offered their furs to the Dutch sailor in exchange for glass beads and other small things. When Henry Hudson returned to Holland, he showed everyone the fine furs. He told of the rich soil and the streams filled with fish. Later Dutch traders began to send many ships to the rich new world across the sea.

M: All right, that may be true if you’re really fat, but you’re only slightly overweight.
W: You see, you do think I’m fat. Now, I’m definitely going to go on a diet, something that’ll work quickly. There’s a new one in this magazine.
M: That’s crazy. Don’t you know that most diets just don’t work? Within a few months over 95 percent of people have put the weight back on.
W: Well, you work out in the gym!
M: Yeah, but that’s for general health and fitness.
W: Sure. But it’s also to build up your muscles so you look better.
M: Maybe.
W: Tell me what to do then.
M: Okay. Why don’t we go and play tennis this afternoon?
W: That’s a great idea and afterwards we can go for pizza.

M: There are many interesting places to see. The roads are quite narrow. I advise you to take the subway.
W: The subway? But is there a subway station next to my hotel? I have to go between the conference center and the hotel several times a day…
M: No worries. There’s a subway station at the conference center, and a bus from your hotel to the conference center that takes only five minutes.
W: Is it expensive to go on the subway?
M: You can get a daily pass that will give you unlimited travel for the whole day for about six dollars. Otherwise, you pay by trip, which is about fifty cents to two dollars each trip, depending on how far you go.
W: Is it easy to get lost?
M: No, no… There are only two lines: one that goes in a circle and one that goes in a straight line.

Good morning, everyone. Here’s the weather forecast for the whole country until dawn tomorrow. In the south of the country, there will be thunderstorms in some places, especially in the southeast. In the north, things are a little better, with only the odd shower here and there, but generally a fairly dry day with temperatures up to 23 degrees centigrade. Moving into the evening, any clouds there should clear up and most parts of the north should have a sunny evening and a clear night, with temperatures dropping to near freezing in exposed areas. Tonight in the south, it should stay the same, still some quite heavy showers in some places and thunderstorms in the southeast. Temperatures in the south during the day are around about average for this time of year—that’s about 20 degrees centigrade and remaining fairly mild during the night, dropping to around 15 degrees in the early hours of the morning. At last, the outlook for tomorrow: little change in the south but it will continue to get brighter in the north. Well, that’s it from me. I am John. Have a nice day. Bye.

I saw a really good video last night when I was taking care of the kids. My sister asked me to look after my two nieces for a couple of hours while she went to the doctor’s. They’re both nine years old; they’re twins. I was a bit tired but I know they love watching films, so on my way to the house I went to the video shop and rented a Disney classic. I’d seen it myself 20 years ago when I was their age, so I was sure they’d enjoy it, and I was right. My nieces love dogs and as the film is about two dogs who fall in love, they sat in front of the TV for over an hour without moving! It’s a complicated love story because one of the dogs lives in the rich part of town and is very carefully looked after and has everything a dog could want, but the other is a street dog who lives on the poor side of town and has nothing.
So it’s a bit like Romeo and Juliet! But of course it’s a Disney film, so although there are some sad moments when we all cried, there’s a happy ending. Everybody who’s seen the film always remembers the scene when the two dogs are eating a plate of spaghetti which ends in a kiss!

My name is Jon and I’m a science student studying chemistry at the University of Texas. I think chemistry is a very important field because it helps explain the world around us. Chemistry has given us the ability to produce enough food to feed the world’s people and to develop drugs to treat diseases.
Last week, I attended an important meeting in Germany. All together there were 625 young scientists from 77 different countries attending. While I was there, I got to know two other young scientists. One was Laura. Laura grew up in Argentina and studied in Britain. She is now working in a lab in Germany. She told me that what inspired her to be a scientist were some books her mom gave her. Those books explained many scientific questions. The other was Ben. He is a young researcher who grew up in South Africa. He said it was his love of insects that got him interested in science.
I’m so glad I had the chance to meet so many other young people who are interested in science. I hope more young people will be inspired to study science in the future.

Now, let me tell you something about my after-work activities. I’m interested in sports, and I run about 3 miles every day. I particularly enjoy cross-country running, where I have to run across fields, jump over streams and so on. While I’m running I think about all sorts of things, and at the end of a run I’m sometimes surprised to find that I’ve managed to solve a problem that was on my mind.
Next year I’m going to try the London Marathon. It’s a long and hard race—26 miles, or 42 kilometers—and it’s tough, but I really want to do it.
I’m interested in climbing, too. I’ll never become an expert climber, but I know what I’m doing in the mountains. I successfully completed a course in snow and ice climbing when I was younger, and I’ve done some easy climbs in the Alps during the last few years. My wife doesn’t share my interest in mountains. She agreed to go climbing with me once, but she found that she felt ill as soon as she got above 1,000 meters, so we decide to follow different hobbies.

M: Hello, Susan. This is Tom.
W: Hi, Tom.
M: I’ve been trying to call you all the time.
W: Really? I’ve been staying at home all day long.
M: But your line is always busy.
W: Oh, maybe there is something wrong with the receiver.
M: I see. I’m calling to invite you to dinner tonight.
W: I’d love to, but my mom has a cold. I must stay at home and look after her.
M: Oh, what a pity! You’d better take your mother to see a doctor as soon as possible.
W: Yes. Thank you.
M: I’II call you back later, bye-bye.
W: Bye.
Text 8
W: Darling, we don’t have enough towels. There is only one.
M: Shall I call room service?
W: Please do. Wait a moment. I don’t feel like going out for breakfast. Can we ask them to send breakfast to our room?
M: Why not? What would you like for breakfast?
W: I think I’ll have a sandwich, a boiled egg, a glass of orange juice, and coffee with cream.
M: Do you really want that much? You usually have only a cup of milk for breakfast at home.
W: Well, it’s different. I don’t have to fix breakfast here. When you don’t have to cook, you enjoy the meal more.
M: That’s why I want you to have a holiday. I want you to forget everything and have a good time.
W: Thank you. Oh, can you help me with the hot water? I want to take a shower.
M: Right now or after I make the call?
W: You can call room service first.

W: The house I bought is beautiful. I am so lucky.
M: Tell me about it.
W: Well, it’s in a small town 20 miles south of the capital city.
M: Good location. But how’s the house itself?
W: It looks quite new from outside.
M: What about the inside?
W: Well, it has a nice living room, a dining room and two large bedrooms. One for me and the other for the kids.
M: It sounds wonderful. Do you have furniture yet?
W: No, I’m going shopping tomorrow.
M: How is the garden?
W: Oh, it is really very nice. It’s not big, but the grass and the trees around it are beautiful.
M: Good. But how about the price?
W: Well, it’s quite expensive, 150,000 dollars. But I can pay in installments, that is, I can make the payment by month.
M: That’s not too bad. May I pay a visit sometime next time?
W: OK. Welcome!

People in different countries have their own ways of celebrating May Day. In today’s program, I’ll share some ways of celebrating May Day in some countries.
In France, people touch cows that are walking on the street. They also drink milk directly from cows on the morning of the day. They do that for good luck.
In Greece, children go from door to door and sing songs of spring on May Day. They usually receive something to eat from their neighbors.
In England, children visit from house to house. They bring flowers in exchange for pennies. But they don’t use the money to buy anything. They throw them into a wishing well.
In Italy, boys often sing to the girls they love.
So how do people in the US celebrate it? Well, in the US, children ring doorbells of relatives and friends and then run away, leaving flowers there as a surprise.
That’s all for today. Thanks for your listening.

W: Oh, no! I don’t have to leave home so early since I started working by subway.
M: Oh, is that so?
W: Yes, I can spend an extra half an hour at home and still be on time for work. It’s really very good, I mean this subway.
M: Isn’t it expensive?
W: Well, yes, a bit. But it’s so convenient. My office is not far from the station there.

W: Hello, Mr Smith. I haven’t seen you for weeks. Where have you been all this time?
M: Oh, I’ve just been to Japan on business.
W: How many countries have you been to?
M: Pretty close to 60 countries now. I guess I’m a real world traveler.
W: Well, if you aren’t, I don’t know who is.
M: Maybe someday I’ll settle down here. I just can’t seem to stay in one place for very long.
W: How many years have you been traveling?
M: I’ve been with the company for 25 years and traveling all the time.
Text 8
M: Betty, you speak several languages, don’t you?
W: Yes, I speak Spanish and French.
M: And what helps you most in learning those languages?
W: Well, I studied both languages in high school, and I’m still studying Spanish here at the university, but I think that travel probably helps me most. You see, I’ve been lucky that I’ve lived in Europe. Believe me, I didn’t speak very well before I moved there.
M: You’re right. Practice is very useful.
W: I always go to the movies, and whenever I can, I watch TV or listen to the radio in the language I’m trying to learn.
M: But I think without some knowledge of the language first, you can’t understand all these.
W: Sure. First it’s a good idea to study grammar and vocabulary.
M: And listening and reading.

M: Lucy, you’re back. What classes did you have?
W: Well, I had English from 9:00 to 10:30, art from 1:30 to 2:00, and math from 2:30 to 4:00.
M: What do you think of the teachers?
W: To be honest, I like all of them, except the math teacher. Though he must be quite young, he seems like an old person. He’s so boring!
M: That’s too bad. How is your English teacher?
W: She is great. In today’s class, she gave us a lecture on how to be a good student. She told us not to push ourselves hard for exams, and to pay more attention to communicating than memorizing.
M: Did she give you any homework?
W: Not today. She wanted us to relax tonight instead of doing homework.
M: No wonder you like the class so much.

Last Friday evening Jack was driving home from work in his car, thinking of the wonderful meal waiting for him at home. He was driving along a road at 50 kilometers an hour when another car came out of a side road quickly. The man tried to brake his car, but it was too late. Unavoidably, there was an accident. There was damage to both cars, and both Jack and the other man were hurt. At that time, another car was following Jack’s. It stopped quickly and a man and a woman came out of the car. They ran to the damaged cars and pulled Jack and the other man out because they thought the gas might catch fire and burn the two men. Then they called the hospital and police. Soon an ambulance came and took the two injured men to the hospital. Then two policemen came and began to measure and asked the witnesses questions about the accident. A truck came and pulled the two cars off the road.

M: A small town just by the seaside in the southeast of England. And where I live is about half an hour’s walk from the beach.
W: OK. What kind of place is your town?
M: It’s very very small. It’s normally really busy in the summer, when there are tourists coming from all over the UK. When the sun is shining, you can go to the beach. It’s really good.
W: Yeah, sounds like a great place. How far is it from London?
M: Ah, it takes about one hour by car. But it will double the time if you ride a train.

W: He had been working here for twenty years.
M: But the boss has been finding fault with him recently.
W: I saw the boss get angry and take 100 dollars from his salary just because he was late for 5 minutes.

W: Oh, then you drive along this street, turn right at the third crossroads, then turn left. Keep straight on until you see a road sign that says “Palace Museum”, and then you follow the sign. It will direct you to the Palace Museum.
M: Drive along this street, turn right, turn left, keep straight, and then I’ll see the road sign.
W: That’s right.
M: Are you sure that I won’t go into any one-way streets?
W: Well, I don’t think you will. I don’t see any cars around here. Where is your car?
M: I parked it over there. You see?
W: Oh, no. You’d better move it before a policeman sees you parking there.
M: Why? I don’t see any “No Parking” signs.
W: But you’re parking in a bus zone.
M: Here comes a policeman. I’d better go. Thank you, Miss. Oh, by the way, how long will it take me to get to the museum?
W: About half an hour.

Good morning, everyone. Welcome to our tour!
This morning, we are going to take you to some points of historical interest in the city. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. If you look out of the window on your right, you’ll see the Grange, one of the oldest buildings in the city. It was built 200 years ago. Perhaps the most interesting thing is that every Saturday afternoon, you can come and watch people bake bread. On your left is a university. This university building is 125 years old. We will be stopping in a moment at Bridgeton Castle. This castle was built by Henry Pellatt for his young wife. He bought almost all of the building materials from England. Notice the beautiful glass windows. Unfortunately, Henry’s young wife became ill and died before the castle was completed. Henry became so unhappy that he left the castle and returned to England.

M: Hi, Lucy. Nice to meet you too. I am from Japan.
W: Oh, it’s a beautiful country. How long have you been here?

W: What do you think of our city London?
M: Well, to be frank, I like living here. London is a beautiful city. I have adapted myself to studying here very well.
W: Great, where do you live? In the school dormitory?
M: Well, when I first arrived, I found a host family and stayed with them for three months. The family was very friendly to me, but there was too much noise and it was difficult for me to concentrate on my study.
W: Oh, that’s a problem.
M: So after that I moved out and rented a small house with two other students near the university. Our new place is much better.
W: Good. What do you major in?
M: Engineering. I found the main difficulty I still have is with the language.
W: Don’t worry. I’m sure you can overcome it soon.
M: Thank you.

Paul, a salesman from London, was driving past a sports car parked outside a supermarket, when he saw it start to roll slowly down the hill. Inside the car were two young girls on the passenger seat, but no driver. Paul stopped quickly, jumped in front of the sports car and tried to stop it, pushing against the front of the car. Another man who was standing nearby got into the car and put on the handbrake, saving the girls from injury.
It was at this point that Paul noticed his own car rolling slowly down the hill and going too fast for him to stop it. It crashed into a bus at the bottom of the hill and was so badly damaged that it had to be pulled away to a garage.
As this was not bad enough, Paul now found he had no one to blame. He was so busy chasing his car that he didn’t get the name of the driver of the sports car, who just came out of the supermarket and drove away without realizing what had happened.

M: Well, I can afford them, but I think they’re a bit too high, really, especially for school kids and families.
W: If there could be some other sports facilities, do you have any opinion about how that should be paid for?
M: I think the Sports Committee can get help from local businesses.
W: Well, thank you for your help.
M: That’s OK. Bye.

When I was at university I was friendly with a girl named Alice who came from a very wealthy family. We were both in the same French class and we used to study together quite often. Anyway, at the end of the term, Alice failed her French and several other courses. She was so upset that she made herself quite ill and her parents decided to take her on a trip to cheer her up. And they invited me to go along too. It was a really expensive ship going from Southampton through to the eastern Mediterranean. I’d certainly never had an opportunity like that before—and I don’t suppose I ever shall again. Well, my main memory of that holiday is boring. Alice was getting better but was still too low to want to talk much or to do anything except sleep. We had amazing trips on the shore every second day or so but otherwise we were at sea with nothing much to do except sit on the ship and eat meals. The average age of the other passengers was at least sixty and I hadn’t even taken much to read.

W: I saw a program on TV that said there were more and more pet-friendly hotels now. If a hotel advertises as pet-friendly, it means you can bring your dog.

M: No, this is the first time.
W: I think you’ll find it quite convenient. The library, labs, sports center are right in university.
M: That’s true. The atmosphere here is different from the outside, but the food here seems it’s the same thing in the cafeteria every day.

W: I want to finish my degree in four years. So I don’t want to forget to take classes I need. I have a friend who has to stay in college another year. She didn’t know until recently that there were some classes she needed to take to graduate.
M: Yes, that happens.
W: I brought the list of courses I plan to take in the fall.
M: All right. Good. I see you’ve already taken 6 credits of your breadth requirements. You have one botany class, one chemistry class, and political science. So that’s 9 credits. Did you take English Composition?
W: No, I don’t need to. I took Advanced English in high school. So I’m not required to take composition.

Good evening, everyone. Do you know at what age a child becomes an adult? The answer depends on your culture or religion.
First, in some North American Indian cultures, a boy became a man around the age of 13. At that time, he would go into the woods alone, without food or water, for several days. When he returned safely, he became an adult man.
In Japan today, young people become legal adults at age 20. Each year on January 15, they wear traditional clothes, listen to speeches, and visit old friends.
Finally, in the United States, the passage into adulthood takes several years. American teenagers can get a driver’s license at the age of 16. The legal age of adulthood is 18. However, they must wait until age 21 to buy alcohol.
OK, that’s all for my lecture. You are required to write a summary of this class.

M: It’s on Bridge Street. It’s very close to your new company, darling. Besides, it has lots of furniture. We don’t have to spend extra money on that. Let me show you the photos on the computer.
W: Let me see. Yes, you’re absolutely right. It’s very beautiful and cheap.
M: Come on. Let’s call the owner and go there to make sure if it’s the same as the pictures.
W: But, honey, there is a small problem. Look here. It says “already rented”.
M: Oh, no. I didn’t notice that.
W: It’s really OK. Frankly, I prefer one with a large kitchen even it has only one bedroom. It’s better if it’s near the subway.
M: OK. I’ll keep searching on the Internet. Let’s see if we have any luck today.

Good morning, everyone. It’s my honor to give you our report. These days we’ve been looking at ways to make shopping less tiring. You know, a whole day at the shops really wears people out. Carrying shopping around is very tiring, and we looked at ways to avoid that. Our group considered a number of brilliant ideas. We thought of hiring out small electrically-driven cars to shoppers, but we came up against problems of space. There just isn’t enough room. We also thought about those moving walkways, like the ones you see at the airports. But we decided against them though, because they require a major redesign of the whole center. What we have actually come up with is a new technology. When shopping you can pick what you want and then just leave it on the shelf. That way, you don’t need to carry your heavy shopping around with you all day. When you want to go home, our computer system automatically sends everything you’ve bought to your exit point, and you can pick it up there.

W: Hey, I called you early this morning, but you weren’t at home. Where did you go?
M: I went to a gift shop with my nephew Jim. He bought a birthday gift for his friend.
W: That’s nice. Well, I was wondering whether you would join us to go hiking this Saturday.
M: That’s awesome. Who else will be there?
W: Jason and Maria. Jason’ll drive his car. How about eight o’clock in the morning at the park gate? He can pick us up there.
M: No problem. See you then.

W: Yes, I’d like a skirt for work. I need a blue one to go with my black blouse.
M: Sure. How about this one? It’s in style now. What size do you wear?
W: Size eight.
M: It’s the right size. Please try it on.
W: It’s a bit small. Do you have a large one?
M: Sorry. We only have red one of larger size. And red still fits with your blouse. And it’s only 70 dollars—10 dollars less than the blue one.
W: I like it too. I’ll take this red skirt.

M: Hey, Mary. Did Mom tell you that Uncle Bob is coming to visit us from San Francisco this Saturday.
W: Oh, is it true? I like him. He’s so funny. You remember last time he came here? We went fishing together and caught lots of fish? We had fish soup for a whole week.
M: Yes. We also went to see the baseball match. After the match, he took us to the theme park where I went on the roller coaster for the first time in my life. It’s so much fun with Uncle Bob.
W: How will he get here, by air or train? Shall we pick him up on Saturday?
M: He’ll come here by air. But, you know, he’s so independent. Last time, he just took the subway to our house from the railway station alone.
W: Right, I know. I hope we can go fishing again this time.
M: Oh, I don’t want to have another week of fish soup again.

W: Hi, Jack. I heard that you’re going to move away?
M: Yes. I’m moving to Guangzhou next month. I just quit my present job of teaching English here. And I will stay here for some days to travel around Shanghai.
W: Why do you leave? You just stay here for one year.
M: Well, I’m really enjoying myself here. People are friendly and the food is very tasty. But the feeling of being familiar with everything is not good for me. I like challenges and I want to see more about China.
W: I see. Is that the same reason that you left Chengdu for Shanghai last year?
M: That’s it. I was a coach at a gym then. Actually, I came to China after graduating from college in Chicago. I’ve been in China for three years. I had three different jobs already and Shanghai is the second city I live in.
W: That’s amazing. So what will you do in Guangzhou?
M: I’m pretty good at photography. I have signed with a tour magazine as a photographer. It’s my dream job.
W: That’s cool. I really appreciate working with you this year.

One kind of vacation that many Americans enjoy is camping. When summer comes each year, millions of Americans drive to the countryside where they can find places to camp. The national parks, many of which are in the mountains, are favorite camping places. Campers enjoy the fresh air, the lakes and the forests which they find in these parks. And those things cannot be attained in big cities. A lot of campers go swimming and fishing. They can also find many kinds of animals and plants in the parks. They get a lot of fun in watching the animals and plants in the wild. Mostly, campers relax. They enjoy a change from their busy lives in the city. Most people camp in tents which they set up in their camp sites. In their tents, they don’t have many conveniences which are easy to get in their homes, such as electricity, hot water and tap water. Tent campers have a very simple life. But they really enjoy life in the mountains where they’re away from the man-made noises and heavy traffics in big cities. When night falls, it’s so quiet that sounds of frogs, birds, and even insects can be heard. Then people can have a good sleep with the sound of nature.

M: Mmm... to be honest, I don’t think it is as good as the former ones, even though the scenery is brilliant. How about you?
W: I think the special effects are amazing. But I am a little bit confused, for the plot is too complicated for me. I try hard to keep track of all the characters and figure out what is going on.
M: Did you read the books before watching the movie?
W: No. Did you?
M: Yes, I have read them all. I think it’s easier to follow for people who are already familiar with the characters. By the way, do you often go to the movies?
W: Yeah. I am a moviegoer and enjoy killing time in the cinema.

M: Hey, Jane. Pretty well. How’s everything?
W: I’m OK. I just haven’t seen you for a long time. Where have you been hiding these days? The boss didn’t tell us where you went.
M: I went to New York for my cousin’s wedding. I left two weeks ago. My cousin married a woman whom he met with on a train to San Francisco. That was two years ago. Then, they started dating each other ever since.
W: Oh, that’s amazing. They must have a very good relationship.
M: Right, but what surprised me most was that the girl he married went to the same primary school with me. But I didn’t know her then.
W: Small world! By the way, I’m going home for my brother’s wedding next month. I guess I’ll have much surprise as well since the girl he’s getting married to is an Italian. They met each other when taking a trip in China.
M: Sounds exciting. How long does it take to fly home?
W: 15 hours. Spain is so far from here.

Good morning, everyone. It’s my honor to give you the morning report today. I’d like to talk about Mozart first. Mozart was a world famous musician and composer. He was born in Austria in 1756. Before the age of four he had shown great music talent so his father decided to let his son take music lessons. When he was five years old, he started composing music. By his early teens Mozart had mastered the piano and violin and he was writing symphonies and operas. His first major opera was performed in Milan in 1770 when he was only 14. In 1781, he left for Vienna where he was in great demand as both a performer and a composition teacher. But the life was not easy because he was a poor businessman and his finance was always in a bad state. His music for the next 10 years was not popular. And he eventually fell back on his teaching job for a living. He died in 1791 at a very young age. Although he lived only a short life, he composed over 600 works. His works are a valuable heritage of all people around the world.

M: Sorry, madam. We only sell fridges. When did you buy it?
W: About 20 years ago.
M: In that case, maybe you can consider getting a new one to replace it. You know, it’s too old. It may cost you more to mend it than to replace it.
W: That makes sense.
M: We have many models of fridges for sale. This one is only 400 dollars.
W: Ah, I think it’s the right size. I can place it right beside my table in the kitchen. But I don’t like silver. Do you have other colors of this type?
M: Sure, we have gold, red, and white. They’re all pretty.

W: Not so good.
M: What happened?
W: It’s my English. I’m trying very hard, but it’s not improving. You’re good at it, Tom. What’s your secret?
M: Well. First, don’t be shy at speaking English. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You’ll learn from them.
W: Oh. That’s a problem. I’m so nervous around people.
M: Second, you have to listen to and read English every day. Repeat what you hear, from groups of words to sentences. You’ll benefit a lot from that.
W: A good method. I’ll try it. What else?
M: Finally, be patient. As the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”
W: Got it. What are you up to now?
M: I’m learning French. I can talk with French people for a while now.
W: Cool. What other languages can you speak?
M: Japanese and German. And Chinese, of course.

I’ve just come back from a short course called Singing for Beginners at Brownstone College. Lena Phipps runs these three-day courses for people with no previous experience of singing. Lena used to be an opera singer, but no longer appears on the stage. Nowadays she occasionally sings in jazz clubs, but spends most of her time teaching. She was excellent!
There were only nine of us on the course I attended. Lena never takes more than ten students on a course. This means that everyone gets lots of attention and plenty of opportunities to sing.
During the three days, students learn around twenty songs in different styles, depending on the interest of the class members. There are classical and modern songs, including pop songs. By the last day, everyone was confident enough to perform their favorite song on their own!
I would really recommend this course. Brownstone College is an old building surrounded by a beautiful garden. The living place is very comfortable—the single and twin rooms are clean and warm.
Courses begin on the last Tuesday of the month, so the next one begins on the 24th of September and continues until Thursday, the 26th of September. I would advise you to reserve a place early, because it’s certain to be very popular!

Good morning, everyone. My name is Maria Brown and I’m the new training director for the company. Today I would like to talk about the future possibilities for language training. First, we need to look at who need language training in our company. As you can see clearly on the table, fifty percent of our employees already speak a second language. However, there is a real need to increase that percentage since our clients are all over the world. Second, we need to consider what system we are using for language training. You all know that our Tokyo branch has been using a new training system this year. And our Rome and New York branches are about to use it next week. So far, the results are not clear but it seems that the new system is working efficiently and employees who are using it are quite impressed with it. My final point is about budgeting; we currently spend 1.2 million dollars a year on all forms of training. Our company will increase it by twenty percent in the future, which means more language-teaching specialists can be hired and more learning activities can be held.

W: How did you collect the stamps then?
M: Well, I just bought the new issues at the post office and put them into my stamp album. That’s all. How about you?
W: I buy new issues on the Internet. In the meanwhile, I do something else, and narrow down collections to one topic, that is Chinese characters. I collect Chinese and foreign stamps.
M: That sounds exciting.
W: Yes. Besides, I also take part in some topic stamp exhibitions in order to make well-organized collections. I visited libraries, attended lectures, and exchanged experiences with my fellow collectors.
M: You’re very particular in this hobby. Because you’re deeply engaged in it.
W: That’s right. What are your hobbies?
M: I like traveling and listening to music, etc.
W: They are also good hobbies I think. Next time I’ll come to listen to you talk about them in detail. Now I have to go back to study.

Tom just graduated from high school and he spent two weeks on his grandfather’s farm this summer before going to the university. He had never been to a farm before and this was the first time in his life that he had seen such animals as geese, sheep, rabbits, dogs, and so on. The first morning he got up almost before daylight to watch his grandma milk the cows. Then he wanted to feed the other animals. Grandpa let him feed a horse and told him not to stand behind the horse because it might kick him. Very soon, the horse would follow Tom all over the farm all day. And several days later he could even ride the horse for a while. Tom also learned to feed the chickens and collect the eggs and put them in a basket. He liked to look after the pigs which he didn’t want to come near in the past. Every day he enjoyed himself very much with the animals. At last the day came when he had to go back home to go to university. That was a sad day for him to say goodbye to all the animals on the farm.

W: Aha. Don’t you miss your family or your country?

M: Well, let’s have a look at them again. I still think Betty is the best choice. She’s the only one who can speak Spanish.
W: True, but she’s only been with us for one year.
M: Well, Mr Smith has been with us for five years, but he can’t move overseas very easily. He has two children in school here. His wife works here.
W: Hmm, I see your point. Well, that leaves Jeff. He can’t speak Spanish, but he’s good at languages so he can learn. He already speaks French and German very well. He isn’t married and he doesn’t have kids.
M: So he can move. He has three years’ experience with us. That’s good.
W: So Jeff it is, then. How soon can he move?
M: I don’t know. I’ll give him a call and ask him to come and have a chat this afternoon. Can you come here, too? Say 2 o’clock?
W: Yeah. See you then.

My wife and I go to the theater whenever we can. But before we buy tickets, we like to know if the play is good or bad. When a new play opens, we usually read the newspaper to get information about it. Last week a new play opened at the theater. The newspaper story said it was very interesting, so we decided to go on Saturday night.
My wife took a long time to make up her mind what to wear and we left our house a little late. By the time we got to the theater, the first act had already begun. We were sorry we missed part of the play, because the rest of it was very funny. The newspaper had been right. It was very good.
After the play, we met some friends we hadn’t seen for a long time. They wanted to go to a night club. It had been many years since my wife and I had gone dancing, but I finally agreed. By the time we got home, it was about two o’clock in the morning. I’m not accustomed to staying out so late and I was extremely tired.
When I was younger, I didn’t have the money to go out for an evening like this. Now that I can afford it, I don’t have the energy to really enjoy it.

M: What can I do for you, madam?
W: I want to buy a coat for my dog. I can’t decide what color and size is OK for him.
M: I suggest you bring him here so that we can choose a good one for him.
Text 2
W: What are you going to have?
M: I don’t know. I’ve never eaten here before. What do you suggest?
W: Well, I always like the salad. It’s usually very fresh, but if you don’t like vegetables, then what about smoked fish? It is very good, too.
Text 3
M: Please make 30 copies of this and send them to the heads of departments.
W: Certainly, sir. They’ll find it on their desks tomorrow morning.

M: Lovely day, isn’t it?
W: Yes, it’s really warm. And it’s supposed to get warmer.
M: Yes, that’s true. You know, though, I’m always a little sorry to see winter go.
W: Really?
M: Well, I love skating. In fact, I used to teach skating for a living.
W: Oh? That sounds interesting. But what do you do now?
M: I work in a bank of America. How about you?
W: I’m with the radio station.
M: Here?
W: No. I’m from Chicago. I’m just visiting here for the wedding.
M: Oh, I see.

W: Many children nowadays can play some musical instruments. In my daughter’s class, some can play the piano and some can play the violin.
M: I think these children are too tired. They have to do too much homework after class and find time to learn to play a musical instrument.
W: But music gives people enjoyment. Learning to play the piano or the violin can help children develop their ability of understanding music.
M: I agree. But I still don’t think it’s a good idea to force children to learn too much when they are young. Can your daughter play the piano or the violin?
W: She can play the violin.

M: Hi, I am interested in signing my kids up for your summer camp program. They are 3 and 5 years old.
W: Thanks. We have different themes in different months. The topic in June is “Amazing Artists”, the topic in July is “Under the Sea”, and the topic in August is “Adventure in the Forest”. Kids can learn more about nature.
M: I’d like to sign them up for the “Under the Sea” camp.
W: Cool. So, did your 3-year-old kid complete potty training?
M: Sorry, what is potty training? Is it some special training or safety training for the camp?
W: Oh, “potty training” means your kid already knows how to use the toilet by themselves.
M: OK. Then, they are good to go. So the price for the first child is $110 and the second has a $10 discount. Is that correct?
W: That is right.

W: Hello, Dan. I was sorry to hear that you had an accident last week. How did it happen and how are you feeling now?
M: Well, I was riding on my bicycle along the street when a taxi driver suddenly made a sharp turn in front of me. I could not stop my bicycle in time and I was knocked down. Fortunately, I only got a broken arm and a broken leg. The doctor said that I would have to stay in hospital for at least a week.
W: Do your arm and leg hurt now?
M: Yes, my leg hurts badly, but I can bear the pain. The only thing that I’m worried about is my classes. You know, next week we’re going to have our mid-term exams.
W: Well, don’t worry about the exams. I can help you.
M: Thank you, but I don’t really want to stay here that long. Anyway, thank you for coming to see me.

W: Yes, my favorite sport is athletics. Have you ever been on an athletic team?

W: It’s so lovely. I like the roof. What a beautiful red!
M: I haven’t painted the front door yet. What color do you think it should be?
W: I think green would be nice… or yellow… or perhaps blue… Oh, I don’t know. Would you like me to make some curtains for it?
M: Oh, that would be great, Mom. Oh… by the way… I’m afraid I’ve got a bit of paint on the carpet over there. I’m terribly sorry.
W: Oh, you haven’t, Tom!
M: It’s all right. I think it will come out. If not, I’ll just paint the rest of the carpet the same color.

M: Everyone is staying in the Hilton Hotel.
W: I’ll tell Rachel and Sam. They asked me this morning.
M: I’m going to post everybody an information paper with the meeting details, probably at the end of next week. Please tell Rachel and Sam.
W: OK. I’ll let them know. In fact, we’re meeting later today at 4, so I can tell them then.

W: Oh, that’s Aunt Gertrude, from Chicago.
M: She’s so thin now. Who’s that woman over there with long hair?
W: Oh, you mean in the orange dress? That’s Cousin Emily. You haven’t ever met her. She lives with her family in Bermuda. So we don’t see her often.
M: And Aunt Jane. She’s looking so old.
W: That’s not too surprising. She must be in her eighties by now.
M: Does she still live in Boston?
W: No. She moved to Atlantic City a few years ago.

M: I wouldn’t say that. It looks fine on me.
W: Are you kidding? You are really behind the times.
M: Perhaps so. But I don’t care as long as my clothes are comfortable enough to wear. What’s the point of keeping in style?

M: I still prefer to be me.
W: You are so stubborn! By the way, I’m going to get some diet pills. I want to look slim.
M: I don’t think that is necessary. That’s not the way a woman should try to stay attractive. Maybe just make-up would be enough.
W: Why not? Come on, be open-minded!
M: Well, in that case all I can say is good luck!

Hello, everyone! Today, I’m here to share with you a study we’ve done recently. In the study, we find children gain weight during the summer. We discover that hot weather, unhealthy food, and playing without a good plan all play a role. What happens to our children during the summer? Before we’re able to answer this question, we have to know something about our children at school. During the school year, children have to follow school rules. For example, they must have regular meal times. But this is no longer true in the summer. As far as I know, a lot of children don’t have breakfast and lunch. They just have one huge meal in the middle of the afternoon. This sort of eating behavior surely leads to weight gain. And also, unhealthy food is everywhere. It’s at schools, homes, and offices. In addition, when parents go to work, children are often left by themselves. They can choose to go outside to play or do some reading at home. But most of them just play computer games. I also want to point out that children’s being overweight has a lot to do with the parents. I advise all parents to watch their own habits. In America, almost 65% of our population is overweight, and two-thirds of our children are being raised by overweight parents.

W: Yes, thanks. We had a great time. And some friends went with us.
M: Where did you stay? In a hotel?
W: No. We camped in the mountains, near Snowtown. We cooked all our meals over an open fire.
M: Sounds wonderful. Was the weather good?
W: The sun shone nearly every day and it didn’t rain at all.
M: Did you like the people there?
W: Yes, they were great. We met some farmers and had tea in their houses.
M: When did you get back? Last night?
W: No, this morning. You’ll think we were mad. We got up at 4:30, left at 5 and arrived here at 9. I’m so tired. What about you? Did you have a good weekend?

M: There were so many people around. People from the surrounding villages came to do different kinds of business.
W: So, obviously there were more shops here. What kind of shops were they?

W: When did the population start decreasing?
M: About 50 years ago, when the river to the south gradually dried up, and people began to face a serious shortage of water.
W: So a lot of people started to move out of this town, right?
M: Yes. What else could they do?
W: Has the local government tried to do something?
M: They have been trying to build this dam for 7—8 years.
W: If the dam is built, the situation here will be improved.
M: That’s what we hope for.

W: It’s wonderful. We can save some money for our home. Oh, no! I was supposed to give Helen a call an hour ago. It’s already a quarter to five. I left my phone with her. She must be still waiting for my call.
M: Use my phone, darling.

I am from South Africa. I am not at all used to this cold weather, but I am glad to say that I have all the clothes for this freezing weather.
When I first got to know that I would be attending this international conference here in Finland, I had no idea what kind of clothes I should take along. I didn’t know what to do when I thought of this two-week stay here, with a rather formal dinner, a few parties, social gatherings and a dance during the conference.
Fortunately, my friend Julia has been to Northern Europe. Yes, she was a great help. She helped to solve my biggest problem. She placed an order for some warm suits and dresses, business-type clothes, of course, of dark colors. She also bought me some skirts and blouses so that I could wear the same clothes in several different ways. A couple of lively colored dresses will give me a nice change from time to time. She also helped me to choose a very warm raincoat and a pair of boots.
Oh, how lucky I am to have such a helpful friend. She saved me a lot of trouble.

M: OK. I am going to see him now.
W: You’d better go and see him after 10:00 in the morning. He is having a meeting now.
M: To tell you the truth, Mrs Wilson, I don’t want to be late. But you see the traffic is always so heavy. How can I not be late?
W: Why don’t you buy a bike? That would be faster.
M: Well, don’t you think it’s too dangerous to ride a bike in this city? My father always says that all the bikes in the street seem to be flying.
W: Then, I’m afraid you have to get up earlier every day.
M: I guess so.

M: Customer service. Andney Grant speaking. How may I help you?
W: I can’t believe this is happening. I called and ordered a 32 inch bag last Friday. But today I found that you sent a 24 inch one. I was planning to use that bag during our vacation in Mexico, but it doesn’t seem possible any more because we will take off on Saturday. It’s only two days away. What am I supposed to do?
M: I’m really sorry, madam. I’ll check right away. Would you please tell me your order number?
W: It’s CE2938.
M: Just a minute. I do apologize, madam. There did seem to be a mistake. I’ll have the correct size bag sent to you by overnight mail right away. It will arrive in time for your Saturday trip. Again I apologize for any inconvenience caused by our mistake. I promise it won’t happen again.
W: OK. Thank you.
M: Thank you, madam, for choosing Linch’s mail. I hope you will have a wonderful vacation.

Hello, everyone. I’m glad to be here to share my opinion about English studying. I’m in my first year in university. Many of you said that listening in English is difficult. Well, it is true for me as well. I remember when I was learning English, I could understand when my teacher was talking to me, but actually I couldn’t understand some of the news reporters when I listened to the news. But now my listening has improved a lot. Here are some ideas that may help you improve your listening in English.
First of all, don’t worry if you don’t understand every word you hear. That’s impossible! You should concentrate only on the most important words.
Secondly, try to get extra listening practice outside the classroom. For example, you can go to the student center and practice listening with their applications. You should also listen to the radio in English and watch English movies.
Next, it’s a good idea to listen to presentations from the Internet. And it’s easy to download presentations onto your computer.
Finally, it’s a good idea to listen to pop songs while you read the words at the same time. There are lots of Internet sites that give you the words of the most popular songs. That’s all from me, and I hope this will help.

M: How are you getting to Beijing, by air or by train?
W: By train. It leaves at 7:00 pm and arrives in Beijing at 5:00 tomorrow morning.
Text 2
M: Let’s exchange phone numbers. If one of us is absent, we can call each other for the homework.
W: That’s a great idea. My number is 55...
M: Wait a second, this pen just died. Let me get another one.
Text 3
M: Excuse me, I need some stamps and envelopes as well.
W: Will you please step right to the third window?
Text 4
M: I asked your mother about your bike accident. She didn’t know anything about it.
W: That’s because I made it up.
Text 5
M: Hi, Betty. This is Ben. Is Martin there?
W: Sorry, but my name isn’t Betty and there is no one here named Martin. I’m afraid you’ve got the wrong number.
Text 6
W: What shall we get for Daddy? You see, it is Christmas Day the day after tomorrow.
M: We can give him some money and he can buy whatever he likes.
W: He is not short of money.
M: Then we can buy him an air-conditioner, for it is so hot these days.
W: But he doesn’t like that.
M: Let’s take him abroad to enjoy a white Christmas.
W: No. He doesn’t like traveling.
M: Really? Then we can buy him some flowers.
W: Good idea!

W: Today will be an exciting day. At 9 o’clock in the morning, we will have the tour of the butterfly park and then later at 2 o’clock we are going to the banana farm.
M: It does sound wonderful! But we must remember that Mr Miller will be waiting to pick us up at 5 o’clock.
W: Is he going to drive us to a different place that I didn’t know about?
M: No, he isn’t. He’s going to drive us to the hotel by 6 o’clock so that we can get dressed for dinner. Tonight we will be dining with the director.
W: Oh, I see.
Text 8
W: Jack, guess what? I’ve just received an email from Jenny. She and Peter are coming down to see us this weekend.
M: Oh, that’s good news! We haven’t seen them for ages.
W: Yeah. The last time we met them was at our wedding three years ago.
M: Did Jenny mention how long they’ll stay?
W: About one week.
M: Great! I can’t wait to show them around our new house.
W: Me, too. We haven’t had any guests since we moved in here. If the weather is fine, we can have a barbecue in the garden.
M: Good idea. I’ll go to the market tomorrow to buy all the things we’ll need.
Text 9
M: You must be pretty excited about your trip to Europe, Emma. When are you leaving?
W: In just two weeks, and I am excited. I’ve been looking forward to this training program for a long time. But there are still a few things I need to do before I go.
M: Like what?
W: Like renewing my passport and figuring out what to do with my apartment while I’m gone.
M: You are not going to give it up, are you?
W: No way! I’ll never find another apartment like it around here. But I don’t like the idea of paying three months for an empty apartment, either. So, I’m looking for someone to take it while I’m away.
M: Um, let me think. Oh, I know just a person. An old colleague of mine, Jim Thomas. He is coming here to do some research this summer, from June to August.
W: Well, that’s exactly when I’ll be away!
M: Tell you what, I’ll be calling Jim late this week anyway, so I’ll mention it to him.
W: Well, thanks, Bill.

One early morning about a couple of years ago, a longtime friend of mine, Tom Lee, was walking through Central Park on his way to work. On a path behind the Great Museum, he noticed a large newspaper sheet lying ahead. When he picked it up, he discovered a brown leather purse under it, rather flat, which suggested nothing was in it. He opened it up just to check and spotted a flash of green, the color of US dollars.
He looked in the purse and discovered a couple of dollar bills and behind the dollars a twenty-dollar bill. Then behind the twenty there were more than ten-hundred-dollar bills. That was quite a lot of money. Tom tried to find out who owned it, but there was no indication in the purse. So Tom became a little worried about the owner. Did Tom find the owner finally? Yes, but it makes a long story and I’ll include this story in my new book Honest Men Today.

W: I saw an ad for a medical assistant job the other day, and I thought you should apply. Or did you say you wanted something more related to technology?
M: I’m actually looking for a job in education. Medicine and technology don’t interest me much.

W: I want to rent this bike. How much is it?
M: 30 yuan for half an hour, and 50 yuan for an hour. How long will you keep it?
W: One and a half hours, I guess.
Text 5
W: Hi, Sam. Did you say you were going to take a trip to China next week?
M: Actually I’ve changed my flight. I’m leaving this Saturday and I won’t return until the end of March.
Text 6
M: Kim, when did you start doing this?
W: Oh, a few months ago.
M: What made you start?
W: I’m not sure. My brother was the artistic one and I didn’t think I was the same type. You know, I was on the basketball team and did quite well. But I’ve always wanted to paint or draw. Last month, I decided I wanted to take a class at the community center to paint or play chess. I decided on painting. I feel like I’ve learned how to relax by it.
M: You’re not bad, you know.
W: Thanks.

W: Hey, Martin, there will be an exam tomorrow.
M: Ah? Really? That’s terrible!
W: Haha, April Fool’s Day! Did you forget what the date is today?
M: Wow, you were pulling my leg all along. I was really fooled. But I’d like to tell you a piece of bad news. Actually, we’ll take an exam today.
W: What?
Text 8
M: Are we there yet?
W: No, Google Maps says we have another hour left.
M: An hour? We’ve been in the car for two hours. This is terrible.
W: It’s not that bad. There’s no traffic and the countryside is beautiful. Look out of the window!
M: I’m also not feeling well. All these turns are making me sick.
W: Do you want me to pull over so you can walk around?
M: No, I’m just going to close my eyes. Do you think there will be enough beds at the house?
W: Yes, of course. Mom made sure to rent a place with three bedrooms. We have to share a room, but it has two beds.
M: We have to share a room? We haven’t had to do that since we were kids.
W: It’ll be fun!
Text 9
M: Oh, yes.
W: They are really nice. There is a lot of space and each house has got 3 bedrooms and a separate shower room.
M: Em.
W: And there is a garden at the back. John, will you put down your book? Aren’t you interested?
M: Not especially.
W: But why? I thought you wanted to move.
M: You are the one who wants to move.
W: But last time when your brother stayed, you said it is impossible to live without an extra bedroom.
M: I didn’t say that. I like this flat. I can walk to work.
W: You could still walk to work if we move.
M: It is farther away, and it is being far noisier near the sports center.
W: But it is not exactly quiet living on this main road. It is simply that we need more space. John, will you at least come and have a look at the new houses?
M: Very well, then, but do not expect to change my mind.
W: OK. We will just look.

Quiet, please. May I have all your attention? We need to get this meeting started because we have a lot to do before graduation. Thank you all for electing me as your chairman and I will do my best to make sure we have a great graduation ceremony. I just need your help to get everything running smoothly.
You all have been selected by your departments to plan the graduation. You should all feel honored that your classmates thought so highly of you. Right now a sheet of paper is going around that I need all to fill out. Please write down your name, telephone number, and what part of the graduation you would like to help organize. Please only sign up for a part that you have time for. When you have signed the paper with your name, telephone number and part, please place the paper on my desk. At our next meeting on Friday, we will break up into groups and get to work on everything. Start thinking about how you want to organize your small groups before then. OK. That’s all from me. See you on Friday.

W: Cinemas and restaurants are fun places to go on Friday and Saturday nights.
M: That’s pretty expensive. I usually like to go to a bar with my friends to have a drink or listen to some good music, and sometimes we dance.

M: Mom, why do you bother growing vegetables in the garden? Carrots, for instance, are very cheap to buy.
W: Because food I grow myself tastes better. When I grow potatoes or onions, I grow them the natural way so I know what has gone into them.
M: But it takes a lot of work to dig the garden.
W: Yes, but that is what nature is really like. And look how much you enjoy my beans. My corn was your favorite when you were little.
M: I must admit that your vegetables are tastier than the kind you buy.
Text 7
M: How long are you planning to stay here?
W: I’ve got 2 weeks altogether. What do you suggest I see?
M: Well, some of our national parks are highly recommended. You’ve got lots of old buildings in your country. Ours is a fairly new country, but I guess we’ve got some of the most beautiful mountains and countryside in the world. It might be a great idea to hire a car and drive around for a couple of weeks?
W: Is it expensive to rent a car?
M: No, not very. You need a driving license. Have you got one?
W: Yes.
M: I think you’d better fly somewhere in the west. Then you can pick up a car and travel around.
W: That sounds great! Thanks a lot.
Text 8
W: I can’t stand it!
M: What’s wrong? Did you fail the history test again?
W: No, not that. We’re reading a part of Hard Times in English literature class. I can’t understand any of it. There are so many people in the story, and I can’t remember who is who!
M: That’s one of Charles Dickens’ greatest stories! It reflects English society of the era. I can’t believe the teacher is only making you read one small part. You won’t be confused if you read the whole book. I can lend you my copy.
W: Thanks, but how can I find the time to read the whole book?
M: The story is quite exciting, and you will read quickly unconsciously. Just try it. Then you will remember everything about it.
W: OK. Thanks for your advice.

W: I see you every day at this cafe. You’re not from around here, are you?
M: How did you know?
W: Your clothing style is so different.
M: I also don’t speak Russian very well, so that makes me stand out too.
W: Many people in Moscow speak English for their jobs in business. I hope you have plenty of people with whom you can communicate.
M: Honestly, not really. But nothing compares with my challenges with the winter weather.
W: But winter just ended! It’ll be summer before you know it.
M: I grew up next to the beach, so I’ll never get used to the Russian climate.
W: Then, how come you left?
M: Well, not everything back home was perfect. Life was easy, but it lacked any excitement or adventure.
W: Have you found that adventure here in Russia?
M: Definitely. Becoming an English teacher has been exciting too. Also, getting to meet interesting people like you.
W: Well, it’s been great to meet you too. I hope you keep coming to our shop.
M: Of course.

Hello, this is Greenhill Studies College. I’m leaving this message in answer to your questions about the Business Studies course. Firstly, the course begins on the 12th of June, and finishes on the 11th of July. At the beginning of the course, we’ll watch business videos. So you won’t need to bring anything for the class, as everything is provided. Don’t forget, however, that although you can bring your own notebook computer if you wish, mobile phones are not allowed in the classroom. You said you’re coming by car. Well, as it’s only a short course, you can use the visitor’s car park which is just beside the main entrance. We’re only a short walk away. Just turn right after the Science Center, cross the staff car park, and you’ll see the door to the Business Studies Department in front of you. Finally, you can attend a language course while you are here. But we only have room on our Italian classes. Oh, no, actually... there’s one place on the Spanish course too. We usually offer French, Chinese, German and Japanese as well, but there aren’t enough students for those classes this summer. If you want to apply for the course, please sign up before the 5th of June. Thank you.

W: I should join them. I wonder how far they run.

M: I already paid you $20 for this load. How much more for the stain?
W: Just $5. Cheaper than a new shirt, right?
M: Yep. Well, this stain was from an unfortunate attempt to cook noodles. I made the noodles out of carrots.
W: Vegetable noodles? Interesting. How did that work for you?
M: Great, until I tried to eat them. They were really long, and they slipped right out of my chopsticks. Can you finish this tonight? I have a Sunday dinner to go to.
W: Sorry. We close soon. And we’re not open on Mondays.
M: OK. I guess I’ll have to wait until the day after Monday.

W: Then we won’t be able to go to the theater tomorrow.
M: No, I’m afraid we have to change all of our plans.
W: All right, David. When exactly are you leaving then?
M: I’m taking the 7 o’clock plane to Rome.
W: Are you coming home before you go to the airport?
M: I’m afraid I can’t. I am still having a talk with my boss here.
W: What about your suitcase?
M: I’m afraid you’ll have to pack it for me.
W: And who is fetching it for you?
M: You’ll bring it, darling.
W: Why me?
M: Because you are coming with me. It’s your birthday on Saturday and this trip is my birthday present for you. I’ll meet you at the airport, three quarters before the flight. See you later, darling.

W: He had to stay in New York to continue his work. He sometimes comes to visit us at the weekend.
M: I guess you live a very relaxing life here.
W: You bet. Before I moved here, I had to work and help my son with his studies. But now my mother helps to take care of my son.

W: OK. Jack, why are you interested in working for us?
M: Well, I major in Social Care Studies. I’m hoping to apply for a job in social care when I graduate, and this would give me some work experience in this field.
W: Great. And what makes you suitable for this kind of work, do you think?
M: Well, I have very good communication skills. That’s my strong point, I think.
W: I agree. Hmm, right. I think we can fix an appointment so we can meet and talk about this some more. Er, how are you fixed for Tuesday 9th September at 4:30?

Welcome to this weekend’s course at Helvellyn Hall. I’m James and I’ll be coaching those of you who have chosen the water skiing lessons. First of all, I just give you some basic information. All meals will be eaten in the dining room. We do not require you to wash up after your meals, or clean the tables, but we would be grateful if you could return all dishes to the kitchen after you have finished eating. You have already got the program for the weekend. However, tomorrow morning’s sailing is canceled as the coach is not available this week. But you can try your hand at sailing on Sunday morning instead. Tomorrow morning, you could join the field walking group or the one doing horse riding. There is one other change but I’m sure it is one that should please all. Tomorrow evening as you know, we have a special dinner for you, followed by some Scottish country dancing. I think that is all the business that I wanted to tell you. Any questions?

W: OK. Is there anything else I can get for you?
M: I also want to have a red wool sweater. But there are only black and green ones.

W: Yes. It’s about my son, Max. He went to school this morning but hasn’t been back yet and it’s 6:30 now.
M: Just a moment, please. May I have his name?
W: Max Smith. We live in 325 Broad Way.
M: Thanks. Now, Mrs Smith, what is the matter exactly?
W: Well, Max left home at 8 o’clock this morning, but just now his teacher called me and asked why Max didn’t go to school.
M: Do you think it’s possible that he went to a friend’s home?
W: I don’t think so. I called his friends and our neighbors, but none of them had seen Max today.
M: I see. Now, let’s move on to some details. How old is he?
W: 9 years old. And he is 5 feet 3 inches tall.
M: What’s he wearing?
W: A blue coat and white shoes, carrying a red school bag.
M: We’ll do our best to find him, Mrs Smith. Please try not to worry.

Hey guys! My name’s Michael and I’m here to tell you about my job as a video game writer. I work with game developers and designers to think of stories, and I write all the dialogues by myself. When I was in secondary school, I never imagined that I would do this job. I didn’t know what to study at university. I was good at lots of science subjects, but I also loved entertaining people and I was good at art. In the end, I went to a film school where I studied lighting, special effects, etc! It was there that I started to think about working in the video game industry. People also ask me what I like most about being a video game writer. Well, the money is good and it’s quite exciting. Just last night, for example, I was at a big dinner where they were giving prizes for new games. But what I love most is the fact that I get on well with everyone in the company. That’s what makes my job so much fun.

M: Hi, Jane. Could you give me a ride? I want to buy some food for the picnic.
W: OK. I’m going home but I can drop you off at the supermarket.
Text 2
W: How long may I keep these?
M: Two weeks. If you cannot return them on time, you will be fined.
W: I think I’d better read them fast.
Text 3
M: Mom, could we go to the cinema?
W: Sorry. I am cleaning the house. But I think you should clean your room right now. Your room is the dirtiest one.
Text 4
W: Don’t move! Stay where you are with your hands up!
M: Forgive me, madam. I’ve only stolen a pair of shoes. I won’t do it again.

W: Have you left anything in the car?
M: I think I brought everything. My coat, your bag and you’ve got the map, haven’t you?
W: No, I didn’t see it—was it on the back seat?
M: Yes.
Text 6
W: That doesn’t look right. Can you put the sofa next to that side table?
M: You mean across from the bookshelf?
W: Yes. Oh, and maybe we should just move the coffee table over here by these chairs.
M: Anything else?
W: Well, now the furniture looks good, but I think we should move those pictures.
M: I don’t know why you’re moving everything. It looked fine before.

W: Good morning, TeleNova. This is Katie,
M: Hi, I need to talk to someone about my mobile phone bill. Can you help me?
W: Yes, no problem. Could I please have your full name?
M: It’s Tim Brown.
W: Great. Can you confirm the billing address?
M: Yes, the address is 2828 West Street.
W: OK, 2828 East Street.
M: Sorry, that’s 2828 West Street.
W: Oh, I see. That’s the street next to North Street. Er, what can I help you with?
M: I think I’ve been overcharged. The bill is too high. I’ve been charged $60, which is $20 more than I should pay.
W: OK, just a moment. Let me have a look at your account history...

W: Hi, George? My name is Dianne. I’m here to show you around.
M: Thank you. I appreciate it. The first few days can be a little stressful.
W: I completely understand. We all have been in your position. Where have you been told to go today?
M: I think it was the science lab, on the first floor. Apparently I won’t be staying there, though.
W: That’s correct. Just for homeroom, from 8:50 to 9:00.
M: What is homeroom?
W: It’s where students gather in the morning to check in before class. It also gives them a short rest period before their first class.
M: That’s a good idea. Please continue.
W: Students won’t have to put away their backpacks until 9:10 and then enter their first class of the day. The same goes for us.
M: What do you teach?
W: Social studies, on the second floor. In fact, my classroom is right under your math classroom. If you have any questions, feel free to come down and see me.

M: Excuse me. I’ve just missed the 16:20 train to Manchester. What time is the next one?
W: The next train leaves at 17:15.
M: What time does it get to Manchester?
W: At 18:30.
M: Can I use the same ticket?
W: Sorry, no... You can’t use this ticket on the 17:15 train. During the rush hour tickets are more expensive.
M: Oh... Do I have to buy another ticket?
W: Well, I can change your old ticket for a new one. Your ticket cost £7.50 and the new ticket is £11.00. So you just pay the difference, which is £3.50.

I remember the first time that I went to Spain on business. I attended a meeting with my Spanish business partners and it was going really well. The language was no problem for me. I thought I would be able to fly home late after the meeting. And then I felt hungry. I looked at my watch. It was 1:30 pm. These people would eat something later, I thought. At 2:30, they still talked about business. I was getting hopeless. Could they really survive on nothing but black coffee and cigarettes? I asked myself. Half an hour later, one of my business partners stood up to phone and check if there was a table at his favorite restaurant. Finally at 3:30, I had a menu in my hand. Then we had this amazing three-hour-long lunch. Because of that, I learnt a lesson. Now, when I go to Spain, I make sure I have a second breakfast around 11:00 so that I can survive until mid-afternoon.
