Life finds me on the Isle of Islay, Queen of the Hebrides. I am the warden (管理員) of The Oa Reserve, a 2,100-hectare nature reserve and working farm owned by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
It was always a dream of mine to live in Scotland. The friendly nature of the island communities, the landscape, beautiful coastlines and above all—the wildlife. The amazing wildlife. So, here I am: living and working on the west coast of Scotland in a dream job. But, things werent always this way.
My school life never really amounted to much. I didnt go on to higher education and my early working life was sloppy (馬虎的), at best. Much of this was due to my disinterest in the work I was doing. I worked in factories, shops, warehouses and even a castle. I was always unsettled and uninspired. I never knew how to channel my interest and passion for nature into a paying job. Wildlife and nature had been part of my life since my youth. I remember my childhood with great fondness: I would read bird books, paint fact files for each species and get lost in the natural world.
In 2014, the opportunity I so badly needed finally appeared—a paid training with Durham Wildlife Trust. I was given all the basic skills and training for habitat control, wildlife surveys and ground management work. In October 2015, I became the reserve warden for the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT), where I stayed for over half a decade. As happy as I was, new opportunities dared me to dream even bigger. The time had come to take my next step, to continue to grow within my career.
So, this is where I am now: living in the middle of a nature reserve, with golden eagles, red deer and hen harriers as neighbors. I feel as if Im the luckiest man alive.

A. Tiring. B. Satisfying. C. Uninspiring. D. Challenging.

Adapting to technological advances is a defining part of the 21st-century life. OpenAIs ChatGPT has already reached an audience of over 100 million people after being launched. While ChatGPT threatens to change writing and writing-related work, the Mesopotamians, who lived 4,000 years ago in a geographical area centered in modern-day Iraq, went through this kind of far-reaching change before us.
Ancient Mesopotamia was home to many of civilizations early developments. Its people were world leaders in adapting to technological and cultural changes. They invented the wheel and agriculture, and pioneered advances in mathematics and urbanization. These achievements are reflected in cuneiform (楔形文字) literature, one of the oldest known forms of writing.
In its literature, Mesopotamians dont present cultural and technological advances as consistently beneficial. They often represent new technologies being controlled in the service of human conflict and mostly serving the interests of those with high social positions. In some ways, the representation of new technologies in its literature reflects contemporary concerns about AI: fears of increasing social inequalities and its potential use in information war.
In recent years, AI—the newest form of writing—has been used to decipher (破譯) the oldest cuneiform literature. In broader fields, the boundaries of how AI may be used havent been clearly explained. In January, for example, a top international AI conference banned the use of AI tools for writing scientific papers.
Humans have been struggling to invent, use and adapt to technology since our earliest civilizations. But the technology and resulting knowledge are not always evenly distributed. Knowing how we adapted to changing technology in the past helps us more fully understand the human condition and may even help us prepare for the future.
28. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Mesopotamians?
A. Their adaptation to threats. B. Their influences on writing.
C. Their contribution to literature. D. Their achievements in civilization.
29. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that the Mesopotamians thought technological advances .
A. prevent human conflict B. bring about hidden dangers
C. take away peoples concerns D. lower peoples social status
30. What is the current situation of AI according to Paragraph 4?
A. Its use in literature is popular. B. It is not allowed to finish papers.
C. Its range of application is undefined. D. It is not accepted in broader fields.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. How People Can Use the Latest Technology
B. How ChatGPT Will Threaten Writing and Work
C. What AI Will Do by Learning Cuneiform Literature
D. What History Can Teach Us About New Techs Impact

An analysis of 5.4 g of stones and dust that a Japanese Hayabusa-2 spacecraft gathered from Ryugu, an asteroid (小行星) near Earth, has discovered a surprising component: a drop of water. The discovery offers new support for the theory that life on Earth may have originated from outer space.
Hayabusa-2 was launched in 2014 on its mission to Ryugu, and returned to Earths orbit three years ago to drop off a capsule containing the sample. The sample has been divided among different scientific teams to maximize the chance of new discoveries. The precious cargo has already produced several results, including organic materials that showed some of the building blocks of life on Earth, amino acids (氨基酸), may have been formed in space.
The lead scientist, Tomoki Nakamura of Tohoku University and his team, which is made up of about 150 researchers from the US, Britain, France, Italy and China, also analyzed the sample from Ryugu. The teams latest discovery was a drop of water containing salt and organic matter. “This drop of water has great meaning. Many researchers believe that water was brought from outer space, but we actually discovered water in Ryugu for the first time,” Nakamura said.
That bolsters the theory that asteroids such as Ryugu, or its larger parent asteroid, could have provided water, which contains salt and organic matter in collisions (碰撞) with Earth. “Such discovery may have been directly linked to the origin of the oceans or organic matter on Earth,” Nakamura said.
Kensei Kobayashi, a scientist who is not part of the research group, applauded the discovery. “The fact that water was discovered in the sample itself is surprising, given the chances of it being destroyed in outer space. It does suggest that the asteroid contained water, in the form of liquid and not just ice, and organic matter may have been generated in that water,” Kobayashi said.
32. What did Nakamuras team find lately?
A. Ryugu moves near the earth. B. Ryugu has liquid water.
C. Organic matter exists in sample water. D. Amino acids come into being in space.
33. The underlined word “bolsters” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by “”.
A. supports B. doubts C. advances D. tests
34. What is the significance of the discovery?
A. It draws attention to amino acids. B. It proves the mission to Ryugu a success.
C. It offers clues to origins of life on Earth. D. It promises a bright future for space exploration.
35. What is Kobayashis attitude toward the finding?
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Favorable.

More than 500 million people worldwide live with depression or anxiety disorders. Its good news, then, that two new 56 (study) show that any type of regular physical exercise including walking, running, cycling or strength training—can help relieve symptoms (癥状) of these conditions.
A University of Gothenburg clinical trial 57 (find) that most patients with anxiety who participated 58 a 12-week strength training program saw major improvements—and the more actively people worked out, the more their anxiety symptoms lessened. For example, participants who exercised for an hour three times a week 59 reached 75 percent of their maximum heart rate became 60 (relax) than those who only attained 60 percent of their maximum heart rate.
To relieve depression, a basic 61 (solve) is to spend less time sitting, according to a study in Frontiers in Psychiatry. The researchers discovered that people who spent more time on the couch (长沙发) looking at screens were more likely 62 (be) depressed than those who got up and moved more 63 (frequent).
For both conditions, exercise may help ease symptoms by releasing feel-good chemicals called endorphins, 64 (stimulate) the growth of nerve cell connections in brain regions that regulate mood, and taking your mind off negative thoughts 65 fuel depression and anxiety.

Walter John was a 20-year-old college student from Homewood, Alabama. As a young man in college far away from home, he didnt have much money. He had to work part-time to cover his living costs.
Recently he gave up his part-time job in the fast-food business and found a new one at a home-moving company called Bellhops. The pay for his new job was higher, and John gained more flexibility with his hours, which allowed him to focus on his studies a bit more. He wanted to do everything he could to secure this new employment opportunity, so he thought he had to try his best to make sure that everything would go well on his first day!
But sometimes, life hits you unexpectedly. A day before John began his new job, his car broke down! With little money to his name, he couldnt have his car repaired at the garage (汽車修理厂). None of his friends were able to take him to work. What was worse, the public transportation was not running at his working time. If he took a taxi, it would cost him half his salary.
Therefore, he decided to walk to the company.
In order to get there by six in the morning, he thought that the safest way would be to leave at midnight. John even challenged himself to arrive there one hour earlier. Even though it seemed like such a far walk, John knew he was fit enough to do it. This was challenging, but John knew it was possible.
He grabbed his wallet and his phone and left his apartment. As soon as he stepped out of the door, he realized that walking alone in the dark at midnight can be dangerous. Moreover, he had to walk through a large wood as well as many blocks of the city. Therefore, he went back to take a bat and a kitchen knife for safety purposes. In case a wild animal or some bad person attacked him, at least he would have something for protection.
注意:续写词数应为150 左右。
Finally John started his long walk.
At that time, a car was drawing closer.
