几百年前,一艘西班牙商船在巴哈马海域沉没,船上装载的大量珍宝也散落在海底。
Carl Allen is a fisherman. He alwayscomes to the Bahamas. But as an adult, itwasnt really fish that brought him to thisplace; it was the legend of a long⁃lostSpanish galleon (大帆船), the Maravillas,a kind of treasure ship. On one darkJanuary night in 1656, the ship collidedwith another ship and sunk.
In 1972, an adventurer Robert Marxshocked the maritime (海事的) world bypulling up artifacts (手工艺品) that con⁃firmed basically all the rumours about theMaravillas were true.“ Some people claimit’s one of the richest Spanish galleons,”said Michael Pateman, director of theBahamas Maritime Museum.
The treasure they found ended upmostly in auctions and private collectionsaround the world. But marine archaeolo?gists like Jim Sinclair insist the main pileof treasure has yet to be found. “We’reprobably looking at well over another $100million still sitting in the sand out here,”he said.
“If we dont do this, Mother Naturewill get it. And that doesn’t do anybody anygood,” Allen said. Allen made his moneyin plastics, and in 2016 he sold thatmulti⁃million⁃dollar company in Dallas, and then told his wife that he was goingfishing for the Maravillas. He bought a55.8⁃meter research ship, and all thesupport boats to go with it. And to top it alloff, he bought his own submersible (潜水器).“ Everybody thought it was wrong. Somany people called me a fool, a laughingstock,” he said.
