I had never thought how much fun I would have on the trip prior to my arrival inSalamanca, Spain, but when I am writing this case study now, a huge flood of memoriesfrom that exciting week come!
My placement (實习工作) was at a nursery and that in itself was hardly“work”—playing with children, reading to them and taking them to see local childrens performerswas by far the most enjoyable work I have ever undertaken. In the afternoons it doubled asan English⁃teaching after⁃school club of sorts, which was incidentally a brilliant way for meto learn Spanish while the pupils picked up some English.
On Monday during the siesta (午休), I went with friends to an amazing restaurant forlunch, where we enjoyed delicious Spanish food and drink. In the evening, we visited localrestaurants and cafes and had a brilliant time! This was a pattern that I tended to followthroughout the week.
Besides the social activities, I also made good use of my camera and used it to capturethe stunning beauty of many of Salamancas buildings.
The trip was definitely an invaluable experience—the large amount of independencethat we were given taught me to be more responsible, and the few people that were initially(起初) homesick got over it almost immediately. Having now visited Spain, I can honestlysay it is by far the best way to learn a language as you are immersing yourself in it by beingin a situation where you are effectively being forced to speak the language, thus improvingyour speaking skills.
The week⁃long trip benefited me linguistically as my speaking and listening skillsimproved considerably as a result of everyones positively speedy talking. Culturally, Ilearnt a great deal more about Spanish culture, and I made plenty of friends.
In a word, the trip was brilliant because I was not just learning the language—I wasalso learning about the people and culture behind the language and even better, I made lotsof new friends along the way!

Reading books and looking at pictures are great, but nothing facilitates (促進)learning like travel, especially for teenagers. Not only do they get to see a world beyondtheir neighborhood, they also get to experience it, feel it, taste it, hear it and better understand the world around them.
After nearly four decades in the classroom and travelling the world, Phyllis DuvallBailey knew this perhaps better than anyone else.
Becoming involved in the work in AKA Sorority, Inc. in the US, she worked to educatechildren on the United Nations. There was no doubt in Baileys mind that the lessons wouldmean so much more if the students could see things themselves.
Starting in 2015, Bailey, 82, set out to take her students to the UN Headquarters inNew York City to give them a“Window Seat to the World”, and thus transformed them intoglobal citizens.
Indeed, it is a great opportunity to give students national and international exposure.Since Bailey saw the students as future leaders, she was desperate to expose them to theUN, its mission, its agendas (议程) and its supporting organizations.
She decided to take out$10,000 of her own money to pay for the late June trip, whichwas enough to take 10 students aged 14⁃17 for a four⁃night stay in New York. There, theyhad guided tours of the UN Headquarters and the Port of New York (纽约港).
It was Quenyaun Paynes first trip to the city and Taylor Sappingtons second. Payne,17, is a senior at Mceachem High School in the state of Georgia, the US. Sappington, 15, isa junior at Therrell High School in Atlanta, Georgia, the US. Both said their visit to the UNwas inspiring.
“I saw not only how countries were working together, but also how theyre focused oncommon goals like global warming and keeping peace,”Sappington said.
Payne commented,“The trip was amazing. I'm so thankful that Mrs Bailey made itpossible.”
Actually, there are a lot of people grateful for the retired teacher's effort. The UnitedNations Association of Atlanta recently gave Bailey its Humanitarian Award, and theUnited Nations Association of the US awarded her the National Education Award.
But Bailey wasnt looking for recognition or even gratitude. Over those four days inNew York, shed already felt it and seen it in the eyes of those 10 teenagers, Payne andSappington included, who made the trip.
“It has been a real joy to get to see and watch their reaction to new experiences,”she said.

14. What can we infer from Sappington's words?
A. He determined to work for the UN in the future.
B. He showed no interest in global affairs at all.
C. He found the trip to the UN greatly instructive.
D. He wanted to visit New York City once again.
15. What made Bailey most joyful according to the text?

How to teach your kids to enjoy hiking
Hiking is one of my family's favorite things to do. Ever since my kids were babies, we've been getting out of the house on most weekends to explore and get exercise and fresh air.
A good, long family hike gives us a sense of accomplishment. 16 It brings uscloser with shared memories and experiences. And it is also a great way to pass timewithout spending money.
But how do we do it? 17 They express surprise at my small children's ability towalk a 10⁃mile trail (小路) or their willingness to climb 2,800⁃foot mountains. Their children don't even want to walk to school, let alone walk for hours in rough conditions. Sowhat's the secret?
I've put together a list of the things that work. Not every family's list will look thesame, but for anyone starting out hiking with kids, I recommend you to keep thesesuggestions in mind.
Eat before you leave and carry food. It's common for us to have a quick bite before westrike out on a trail. I always pack snacks (零食) like nuts, fruit, chocolate, and cookies.18
Pack lots of water. There is nothing more miserable (痛苦的) than hiking while we arethirsty. I let my kids drink as much as they want because they can always stop to relievethemselves along the way.
Show kids a route map. 19 Maps are perfect for them to understand that. I alwaystake some time before we leave, to show them where we are, where were headed, and whatthe journey will look like. Point out landmarks that they will see. We talk about how long itwill take, so they don't ask me,“Are we there yet?”
20 It's about steady progress. The last thing you want is a burnt?out child whocan barely continue. So set a slow, comfortable pace, and have fun!
A. I'd like to say it is not an easy question.
B. Remember, it's not about the speed.
C. It creates opportunities for conversation.
D. Give them encouragement along the way.
E. Kids like knowing where they are on the earth.
F. I often get this question from friends and strangers.
G. These are served at official stops, but not just handed out freely.

Edun did not want to go on a hike. She especially did not want to go on a long hike inthe mountains that led to a tiny cabin(小屋)with no electricity and no running water. Shewanted to stay home reading a book instead while wrapped in a warm blanket.
“Ready?”Mom asked cheerfully after breakfast. Edun looked out of the window andonly saw rain, lots of it.“We should go another day,”Edun suggested.“Maybe a hundredyears from now.”She worried she would get tired on the hike. Because it was raining, Edun had to wear her rain pants, her rain hat, her rain jacket, and her waterproof boots. Her jacket had a rough material on the inside. She didnt like howit felt against her skin.
After about half an hours drive, they parked at a trailhead(登山口). The rain hadstopped but the ground was still dripping wet.“ Well be there by afternoon! ”Mompromised. The afternoon sounded far away.
