I had never thought how much fun I would have on the trip prior to my arrival in Salamanca, Spain, but when I am writing this case study now, a huge flood of memories from that exciting week come!

My placement (实习工作) was at a nursery and that in itself was hardly“work”—playing with children, reading to them and taking them to see local children's performers was by far the most enjoyable work I have ever undertaken. In the afternoons it doubled as an English-teaching after-school club of sorts, which was incidentally a brilliant way for me to learn Spanish while the pupils picked up some English.

On Monday during the siesta (午休), I went with friends to an amazing restaurant for lunch, where we enjoyed delicious Spanish food and drink. In the evening, we visited local restaurants and cafes and had a brilliant time! This was a pattern that I tended to follow throughout the week.

Besides the social activities,I also made good use of my camera and used it to capture the stunning beauty of many of Salamanca's buildings.

The trip was definitely an invaluable experience—the large amount of independence that we were given taught me to be more responsible, and the few people that were initially(起初) homesick got over it almost immediately.Having now visited Spain, I can honestly say it is by far the best way to learn a language as you are immersing yourself in it by being in a situation where you are effectively being forced to speak the language, thus improving your speaking skills.

The week-long trip benefited me linguistically as my speaking and listening skills improved considerably as a result of everyone's positively speedy talking.Culturally, I learnt a great deal more about Spanish culture, and I made plenty of friends.

In a word, the trip was brilliant because I was not just learning the language—I was also learning about the people and culture behind the language and even better,I made lots of new friends along the way!

4.What's the benefit of teaching in an after-school club to the author?

A.Picking up Spanish.B.Making lots of new friends.

C.Having fun with students.D.Earning some extra money.

5.Which of the following social activities is unmentioned?

A.Going to an English corner.

B.Taking pictures of Salamanca's buildings.

C.Visiting local restaurants and cafes on Monday evening.

D.Going to an amazing restaurant for lunch with friends.

6.What can we learn from paragraph 5?

A.Forced learning doesn't do us any good.

B.Being homesick while visiting abroad is natural.

C.Spain is a great place to experience different cultures.

D.The trip taught the author to overcome difficulties independently.

7.What's the probable meaning of the underlined word“immersing”in paragraph 5?

A.Being involved in.B.Making changes for.

C.Adjusting to.D.Getting better at.

Wellington is a scenic, windy and diverse place. It has some of the best museums, art galleries, restaurants and coffee houses in the country. It is the storehouse for the nation's historic, cultural and artistic treasures.Being the first place where European settlers arrived,it also boasts lots of historic streets and buildings.

Reading books and looking at pictures are great, but nothing facilitates (促进)learning like travel, especially for teenagers. Not only do they get to see a world beyond their neighborhood, they also get to experience it, feel it, taste it, hear it and better understand the world around them.

After nearly four decades in the classroom and travelling the world, Phyllis Duvall Bailey knew this perhaps better than anyone else.

Becoming involved in the work in AKA Sorority,Inc.in the US,she worked to educate children on the United Nations. There was no doubt in Bailey's mind that the lessons would mean so much more if the students could see things themselves.

Starting in 2015, Bailey, 82, set out to take her students to the UN Headquarters in New York City to give them a“Window Seat to the World”,and thus transformed them into global citizens.

Indeed, it is a great opportunity to give students national and international exposure.Since Bailey saw the students as future leaders, she was desperate to expose them to the UN,its mission, its agendas(议程)and its supporting organizations.

She decided to take out$10,000 of her own money to pay for the late June trip, which was enough to take 10 students aged 14-17 for a four-night stay in New York. There, they had guided tours of the UN Headquarters and the Port of New York(纽约港).

It was Quenyaun Payne's first trip to the city and Taylor Sappington's second.Payne,17,is a senior at Mceachem High School in the state of Georgia, the US.Sappington,15,is a junior at Therrell High School in Atlanta,Georgia, the US.Both said their visit to the UN was inspiring.

“I saw not only how countries were working together, but also how they're focused on common goals like global warming and keeping peace,”Sappington said.

Payne commented,“The trip was amazing.I'm so thankful that Mrs Bailey made it possible.”

Actually, there are a lot of people grateful for the retired teacher's effort. The United Nations Association of Atlanta recently gave Bailey its Humanitarian Award, and the United Nations Association of the US awarded her the National Education Award.

But Bailey wasn't looking for recognition or even gratitude.Over those four days in New York, she'd already felt it and seen it in the eyes of those 10 teenagers, Payne and Sappington included, who made the trip.

“It has been a real joy to get to see and watch their reaction to new experiences,”she said.

12.What does the underlined word“this”in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The benefits of travel.B.Good reading habits.

C.New teaching methods.D.The things teenagers like.

13.How did Bailey help students?

A.She offered them voluntary opportunities at the UN.

B.She paid for trips that helped them see the world.

C.She paid for them to go to school in other countries.

D.She taught them some useful lifelong reading skills.

14.What can we infer from Sappington's words?

A.He determined to work for the UN in the future.

B.He showed no interest in global affairs at all.

C.He found the trip to the UN greatly instructive.

D.He wanted to visit New York City once again.

15.What made Bailey most joyful according to the text?

A.Students'gratitude.B.Social recognition.

C.Students'gains.D.Official awards.

How to teach your kids to enjoy hiking

I've put together a list of the things that work. Not every family's list will look the same, but for anyone starting out hiking with kids, I recommend you to keep these suggestions in mind.

Pack lots of water. There is nothing more miserable (痛苦的)than hiking while we are thirsty.I let my kids drink as much as they want because they can always stop to relieve themselves along the way.

Show kids a route map.__19__Maps are perfect for them to understand that.I always take some time before we leave, to show them where we are, where we're headed, and what the journey will look like.Point out landmarks that they will see.We talk about how long it will take,so they don't ask me,“Are we there yet?”

__20__It's about steady progress. The last thing you want is a burnt-out child who can barely continue. So set a slow, comfortable pace, and have fun!

A.I'd like to say it is not an easy question.

Edun did not want to go on a hike. She especially did not want to go on a long hike in the mountains that led to a tiny cabin(小屋)with no electricity and no running water. She wanted to stay home reading a book instead while wrapped in a warm blanket.

“Ready?”Mom asked cheerfully after breakfast.Edun looked out of the window and only saw rain, lots of it.“We should go another day,”Edun suggested.“Maybe a hundred years from now.”She worried she would get tired on the hike. She worried about getting bored with the dark cabin.Mom said it was time to stop worrying and get into the car.

Edun's brother, Will, was waiting in the garage, who wore a camera around his neck. Will was four years older than Edun and had climbed many more mountains. He'd started hiking when he was two and loved it.

Because it was raining, Edun had to wear her rain pants, her rain hat, her rain jacket, and her waterproof boots. Her jacket had a rough material on the inside. She didn't like how it felt against her skin.

After about half an hour's drive, they parked at a trailhead(登山口).The rain had stopped but the ground was still dripping wet.“We'll be there by afternoon!”Mom promised. The afternoon sounded far away.

Will identified a bird sitting on a nearby branch—“Fox sparrow!”—then he raced down the trail and was soon out of sight.

Edun rested under a pine tree.“You can't force me to walk,”Edun said.“You're right,”said her mom smilingly, standing under the tree, too,“but you will never know what may lie ahead and amaze us.”
