Disability3 is a part of life. People with prostheses4 can help themselvesout with difficulties in life. This is the message from eight-year-old Mia Stewartand her family who have just spent four days at the world famous MobilityClinic in Melbourne.

Mia was born with a terrible illness. In 2019, she traveled to America tohave a surgery5 on her leg. She lives in Sydney and has been using a prosthesissince she was nine months old.

Mia was one of 95 amputees in the mobility clinic6 of amputeephysiotherapist7 Cathy Howells and her team. The clinic tries to give amputees, both young and old, tips on how to walk better, run, play sport and improvetheir mobility.

Mias mother said these clinics were very helpful for Mia. Seeing people like herin a place where no one asks her questions or keeps looking at her, is invaluable8.Ms. Howells said the clinic was a great learning activity for amputees of all ages.

Ms. Howells has worked with amputees for 30 years.“It feels like theyrecoming home because the clinic is all about them and everyone is the same as them. They may never have met another amputee before. Weve got a group of kids whocome every year and theyre good friends soon,”she said.

Ms. Howells said, “I think what these clinics do is that they help amputeestake part in more and get back the things in their life that they want to do. Theyhave the same needs as everybody else. They need the same chances. Its just thatthey may need a prosthesis to help them achieve those goals.”
