For many Chinese tennis fans, seeing Wu Yibing tearing around the court with lightning speed, perfect touch and a neversay-die mentality seemed like a dream, too good to be true.
Wu Yibing became the first Chinese mainland player to lift an ATP Tour trophy after winning the Dallas Open title on February 12th.
The last character of Wu's given name“bing”means light in Chinese. Now, the 23-year-old, just like a beam of light, flashes into Chinese tennis.
“I'm very proud of myself, especially thanks to all the fans and my team who came here to support me.I couldn't do this without any of you guys,”Wu said.
Brought to a tennis court for the first time at just five, initially encouraged by his parents as an exercise to lose weight,Wu soon had his talent discovered by his provincial junior team.In 2017, Wu won his first ATP Challenger title in Shanghai. However, affected by injuries, Wu hardly played any international matches over two years. He also had elbow surgery and could not straighten his right arm completely.
He made his return last year and won three ATP Challenger titles before qualifying for the US Open.“Looking back, I feel like I wouldn't have been here if not for the ups and downs over the past few years.I take all the setbacks and struggles as an asset(资产)that helps me mature mentally now,”said Wu.“The championship today was a payoff for all the hard work and everyone who's supported me along the way.”
