Have you ever thought of taking a train and having an adventure? Riding the train can be a real adventure. That is how I feel every time I take Amtrak. I often take a four-hour trip to visit my children. Every time I take this trip I never know what will happen.
Last week when I was on the train and over an hour into the train ride, there was a man sitting by himself in the back of the train carrying on a mobile phone conversation—in another language. It was loud and disturbed most of the people on the train. I think it was annoying.
Fortunately I sat next to a wonderful old lady who was taking a two-day trip by train. She said her two daughters were distraught at the thought of her driving for three days to reach her home, although she had no trouble driving. The train ride was the only choice for her. She loved to look out of the window and watch the world go by on the train.
She was fun to talk to and asked me when my children started being parents. That is a very good question. Both of us are old and have children. She asked that same question from time to time.
There are always many people on the train from all walks of life, different countries, and many languages. Riding the train is a great way to increase your knowledge and take in all kinds of cultures. If you get hungry, you can buy food in the food car at any time. If you need to use the restroom there is always one available.
It sure beats driving the car, which has to stop for food and restrooms. And it is better than taking the bus.
1. Why did the author take the train ride?
A. To do business. B. To see her children.
C. To visit places of interest. D. To see her old friends.
2. What does the underlined word “distraught” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Disappointed. B. Satisfied. C. Worried. D. Pleased.
3. What is TRUE about the old lady sitting next to the author?
A. She is too old to drive. B. She dislikes taking trains.
C. She has a good memory. D. She lives far away from her daughters.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A. The History of Amtrak B. Train Ride—A Cultural Experience
C. A Wonderful Lady D. A Painful Experience on the Train

Are you thinking about traveling alone? You must have a million questions: Where should you go? Will there be someone to talk to? How do you stay safe? And is it all right to travel alone?
1 Here are some good tips.
Choose a place where you feel comfortable and safe.
Truth be told, traveling alone for the first time is more about the experience than the destination. 2 It could be somewhere close to home or somewhere youve already been with friends.
Make a plan.
Always make a plan. That way youll avoid worrying too much over where youre staying, what to see and how youre getting from A to B.
Book hotels ahead of time.
3 Besides, when you book your hotel, ask if they will send a driver to pick you up.
Talk to people.
If youre going to a touristy place like Thailand, there are lots of other people who are traveling alone. 4 They might also ask you to join them for dinner or a beer. That happens a lot.
Let someone know where you are.
Your family and friends love you and probably worry about you every day, so text them and let them know what youre up to throughout your trip. 5 And in case something did happen, theyll know where you are.
A. Draw more attention to yourself.
B. That will make you and them feel safer.
C. In fact, traveling alone is not as scary as it seems.
D. The first thing you need to do is believe in yourself.
E. So make sure to choose a place that you feel comfortable with.
F. Most likely, theyll be easy to talk to and theyll want to communicate.

There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often the whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains had been their favorite relatives. This was the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen newspapers and magazines to read and reread.
It was not long before the train was rattling across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Bahru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I had been looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful.
I looked forward to the return journey, by train.

When Amanda Lemay heard the story about a baker and her husband who were traveling around the United States in a van (廂式货车), learning from expert bakers, she wanted to do something similar. So she got rid of most of her possessions and made an old ambulance with her dad into a lovely home on wheels.
Lemays ambulance is actually a former emergency response vehicle for the US Navy: built on a 2006 Ford E350 Cutaway. Renovations (翻新) were done by her and her dad. Now the dark blue vehicle has a lot of built-in cabinets on all sides, offering a lot of storage space. The inside is tastefully done to suit Lemays work and hobbies.
As Lemay mentions, not only did her father help, but also the rest of her family. Lemays mother helped sew the decorations on the removable cushions, and her sister crafted the leather pulls. It was truly a family affair (事务).
Her current nomadic (流浪式的) lifestyle fits well with her work doing audio books, voiceovers, and publishing work. In the end, this unexpected path has Lemay rethinking what it means to be truly sustainable, now that van life has gotten her to become minutely aware of the water, electricity and other daily resources that she uses. But all these day-to-day concerns are balanced with a greater sense of freedom.
“Its almost mind-blowing, it feels like a completely different life because Im doing the work online, and I can do things on my own schedule. I can be where I want to be, and do the things I want to do, and spend time outside.”
5. Why is the story of a baker and her husband mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. It shows a creative way of learning. B. Its an example of strong determination.
C. It was spoken highly of by Lemay. D. Its where Lemay got her inspiration.
6. Why was the renovation said to be a family affair?
A. All the family members worked on it. B. Its cost was shared by the family members.
C. It was made to suit the life of the family. D. The whole family gathered to celebrate it.
7. What has Lemay learned from her nomadic lifestyle?
A. To value every minute of her life. B. To make full use of what she has.
C. To keep a balance between work and life. D. To be aware of the real meaning of family.
8. What does Lemay like about living in a van?
A. Reflecting on life. B. Living on her own schedule.
C. Forgetting all about work. D. Being free from day-to-day worries.

Hi Dale,
I have been on a trip in Kunming with my parents these days. Kunming, which is located in the southwest of China, is the capital city of Yunnan Province. One great thing about Kunming is the nice weather. The temperature here has not changed much all year round. Yesterday we visited Dianchi. After we arrived there, we were deeply attracted by the beautiful landscape. We also went to the Green Lake Park and took many photos there. When it comes to delicious local food, what impressed me most was the crossing-the-bridge rice noodles. Its the most delicious noodles Ive ever eaten.
