I'm a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year.In the society where my peers and I live,we tend to accept the rat race values. As students,we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs.I enjoy studying and have consistently received A's in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.

Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad.Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home.Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work.Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job.He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.

Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments,I'm especially proud of my service at the old folks'home,so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future.I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it,after all.

The annual marathon in my town occurred as scheduled. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance in case any of them needed medical attention. As the athletes began to pace themselves, the front runners started to disappear. It was then that my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue running shorts and a baggy white T-shirt.

I knew we were already watching our last runner. Her feet were turned in, yet her left knee was turned out.Her legs were so crippled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to walk, let alone run a marathon.

The driver and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. We would move forward a little bit, then stop and wait for her to gain some distance. Then we'd slowly move forward a little bit more.As I watched her struggle to put one foot in front of the other, I found myself expecting her and urging her forward.I wanted her to stop, and at the same time,I hoped that she wouldn't.

Finally, she was the only runner left in sight.I sat on the edge of my seat and watched with respect and amazement as she pushed forward with strong determination through the last miles. When the finishing line came into sight, the cheering crowds had long gone home.Yet she didn't give up and crossed the line.

I don't know this woman's name, but that day she became a part of my life—a part I often depend on.For her, it wasn't about beating the other runners or winning a prize. It was about finishing what she had set out to do.When I think things are too difficult, I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.

8.Which words can best describe the woman in the marathon?

A.Hard-working and responsible.

B.Proud and determined.

11.What could be the best title for the text?

B.The last runner

C.An unforgettable job

Hard work really does pay off.Scientists find that perseverance (坚持不懈) leads to better grades and higher achievements in school.

“Being passionate is not enough to ensure academic success,”said researchers, who thought of“courage”as a key to success. This is also regarded as effort in reaching longterm goals, and determination to continue one's efforts in spite of hardships.Researchers thought that the finding could help create new training to help children develop the skill and help ensure their future success.

Researchers from the Academy of Finland studied more than 2,000 students from Helsinki. They were followed through their academic career from 12 to 16, the sixth grade until the ninth grade in local school years.Researchers found that the factor that best predicts courage is related to goals, with previous academic achievements playing no role in developing the skill.

Professor Katariina Salmela-Aro,who led the study, said,“Courage means a young person is really interested in his or her studies and does not give up easily.A key element of courage is high perseverance when people are facing difficulties and hardships. The important finding is that these factors are the key to success and well-being.Our study shows the power of courage.”

She also thinks it is important to develop new practices and qualities to improve courage in teenagers. She added,“Young people should see everyday school work as part of their life in a broader context and establish achievable goals for themselves.Schools must also serve as a place where it is safe to fail and learn to deal with weaknesses. One must not be discouraged by weaknesses, but draw strength and new energy from them.

12.What can we learn about the research?

A.It took at least three years.

B.It helped students make progress.

C.It met many difficulties.

D.It followed 2,000 students abroad.

13.What should students do according to the researchers?

A.Focus on former grades.

B.Achieve their dreams.

C.Try all their best.

D.Forget sadness.

14.Where is the text probably taken from?

A.A picture book.

B.A literary book.

C.A geography textbook.

D.An educational magazine.

15.What is the main idea of the text?

A.Being passionate is the key to success.

B.Courage counts in better achievements in school.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

There are many things in senior middle school that I still remember clearly.I studied for three years in a country school, which is far away. However, it has a good environment and strict but kind teachers, so I loved the school and all my teachers very much. One Friday, just as we began to read books in reading class at our desks, our teacher, Mrs Hill, said that she needed to be out of the classroom for a few minutes. She asked the class to read in silence while she was gone. And she said that those who didn't read books in silence would have to answer her questions when she returned. It was well-known that Mrs Hill was strict. So we had to be on our best behaviour.

But that Friday,Mrs Hill hadn't been gone for ten seconds before some students in the classroom started to talk. From one corner of the classroom, I heard Josh ask Nick,“Can I trade my candies for your toy?”At the other end of the classroom, I heard Samantha tell Kayla,“Let's sit together on the bus for the museum field trip tomorrow.”And so it went all around me,until about half of the students communicated with each other.

After a while, I, too, forgot about Mrs Hill's instructions.I turned back and asked my friend Liza,“Can I borrow your storybook and keep it for a day?”As soon as the words were out of my mouth, Mrs Hill walked into the classroom. The whole class returned to silence immediately. And we were full of fear.

Mrs Hill slowly looked around the classroom and said,“If you were talking while I was gone, then please stand up.”The guilt(内疚)suddenly weighed heavily on me.“I shouldn't have talked while she was not in the classroom. And now I should be honest and admit my mistake bravely. This is what my parents have always told me,”I thought. Then, I summoned up(鼓起)my courage to stand up,worried about the punishment that waited for me.Then I looked around.
