William Shakespeare and the New Astronomy: A Case Study of Hamlet

ZHANG Jian-ping

(School of Foreign Languages,Qufu Normal University,Qufu,Shandong 273165)

Abstract:It is generally believed the universe consists of two parts: the physical universe and the conceptual universe. And the conceptualized universe corresponds to the events in the human world.During the English Renaissance, the still and stable Ptolemaic geocentric model was universally accepted, which echoed the collective consciousness of the harmonious society under the rule of the Tudor dynasty. However, since the publication of On the Revolution of the Heavenly Spheres in 1542,the Ptolemaic model has been constantly challenged by Copernican heliocentric model,Tycho’s geo-heliocentric model, and Digges’infinite model. For a long time, scholars have been debating about Shakespeare’s relation with these models, and astronomical interpretations of Hamlet could provide a new perspective to think about this issue.

On the Differences between Shi Ji and Han Shu in Terms of Jia Yi’s Biography

GUO Chun-lin,QIN Yan-lin

(School of Liberal Arts,Guangxi University,Nanning,Guangxi 530004)

Abstract:There are great differences between Shi Ji and Han Shu in terms of Jia Yi’s biography.Sima Qian put Qu Yuan and Jia Yi together, expressing a profound sympathy toward their misfortunes and satirizing the social injustice with emotion and momentum, while Ban Gu adopted Jia Yi’s political treatises, presenting his political activities with objective narrative and emotional restraint. These differences stem from Ban Gu’s reverence for Confucianism. In the Eastern Han Dynasty,Confucianism rose as the official ideology, which influenced Ban Gu's historical writing. The Confucian concept of gentleness molded Ban Gu’s character, and gave Han Shu an elegant and dignified style. The Confucian values permeating Han Shu,such as orthodoxy, benevolence, propriety, patriotism and loyalty to the monarch, were of great significance for maintaining the reign of the Han Dynasty, demonstrating its governance experience and promoting patriotic thoughts.

(1.School of Foreign Studies,South China Normal University,Guangzhou,Guangdong 510631;2.School of Foreign Languages,Sun Yat-sen University,Guangzhou,Guangdong 510275)

Abstract:The novel A Single Swallow written by Zhang Ling,a contemporary overseas Chinese writer,is well received by target readers. The abundant metaphors in the novel,on the one hand, enhance its artistic appeal, while on the other, bring significant challenges to the translator Sherry Bryant. This paper, through close reading and comparative analysis, uncovers Bryant’s methods of metaphor translation. The strength and deficiencies of the methods, illustrated by representative cases, provide a methodological reference for translating metaphors in contemporary Chinese novels. Results show that Bryant has preserved the vehicles of most metaphors(66.8%)in the target language. The preservation of vehicles, together with the selection of appropriate translation methods in different contexts, helps to demonstrate the diverse cultural connotations of the source texts and the ingenious rhetorics of contemporary Chinese writers, and therefore can promote literary exchange.

Beyond Thumos: Aristotle on Virtue Friendship

TANG Yuan

(Department of Philosophy and Religious Study,Peking University,Beijing 100000)

Abstract:In The Nicomachean Ethics,Aristotle systematically discusses the genealogy of friendship with virtue friendship as its peak, and elaborates on the meaning of virtue friendship. The greatest challenge for virtue friendship is that in what sense two good people that lack nothing still need each other. There is an inspiring argument that this question can be well explained from the perspective of thumos and moral competition. However, according to the author, thumos and competition cannot explain the special place of virtue friendship in the genealogy of friendship. For Aristotle, the deepest need for others is a philosophical one beyond thumos and politics, accomplished by mutual contemplation. This connotation gives the highest significance to virtue friendship and reflects the superiority of philosophy over politics in the book as a whole.

The Evolution of Law-to-Image Objective Interpretative Principle:On the Development Logic of the Han-yi’s Image-numberology

WANG Qi

(School of Marxism,China’s University of Mining Industry,Xuzhou,Jiangsu 221116)

Abstract:In the Han dynasty, the focus of Image-numberology shifted from divinatory school to classic annotation school. Its development logic lies in the evolution of the law-to-image objective interpretation. The divinists tried to enter the history of the Han-yi through using the laws of mentor and family as objective principles of interpretation.Restricted by the laws, this school explained images from theological and political perspectives. In contrast, the classic annotators meant to break through the laws of mentor and family, and they took the essence and objectivity of the Image-numberology as the new connotation of objective interpretation. They established the theory of Image-numberology interpretation at the methodological level with the linguistic explanation of Yi Ci.From Zheng Xuan and Xun Shuang to Yu Fan,the Image-numberology reached the peak of theorization and academicization.Although Yu Fan had established the objectivity in the interpretation of the Image-numberology,he was limited to the circular interpretation of Yi-image and Yi Ci.It intensified the internal contradictions in the study of Han-yi,pushed it towards self-denial,and made its transition to the ontological metaphysical Yi inevitable.

LIU Jiong

(Department of Information Engineering,Xuancheng Vocational and Technical College,Xuancheng,Anhui 242099)

Abstract:The urban-rural income gap is one of the most prominent problems in China’s social and economic development. This paper selects the data of six cities in southern Anhui from 2010 to 2021 to build a dynamic panel GMM model to empirically explore the influencing factors of urbanrural income gap,and the result shows that economic growth and financial development significantly expand the urban-rural income gap, while government expenditure, industrial structure and urbanization significantly reduce the urban-rural income gap.Reasonable allocation of financial expenditure, optimization of industrial structure, acceleration of urbanization and rural financial development can promote economic growth, and also help to narrow the income gap between urban and rural areas.
