When I was 9, we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived at Heathrow, London on a gray January morning. Everyone in the family settled quickly into the city except me. Without my beloved beaches and endless blue-sky days, I felt at a loss and out of place. Until I made a discovery.
Southbank, at an eastern bend in the Thames, is the center of British skateboarding, where the continuous crashing of skateboards left your head ringing. I loved it. I soon made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our own language. And my favorite: Safe. Safe meant cool. It meant hello. It meant don’t worry about it. Once, when trying a certain trick on the beam (横杆), I fell onto the stones, damaging a nerve in my hand, and Toby came over, helping me up: Safe, man. Safe. A few minutes later, when I landed the trick, my friends beat their boards loud, shouting: “Safe! Safe! Safe!” And that’s what mattered—landing tricks, being a good skater.
When I was 15, my family moved to Washington. I tried skateboarding there, but the locals were far less welcoming. Within a couple of years, I’d given it up.
When I returned to London in 2004, I found myself wandering down to Southbank, spending hours there. I’ve traveled back several times since, most recently this past spring. The day was cold but clear: tourists and Londoners stopped to watch the skaters. Weaving (穿梭) among the kids who rushed by on their boards, I found my way to the beam. Then a rail-thin teenager, in a baggy white T-shirt, skidded (滑) up to the beam. He sat next to me. He seemed not to notice the man next to him. But soon I caught a few of his glances. “I was a local here 20 years ago,” I told him. Then, slowly, he began to nod his head. “Safe, man. Safe.”
“Yeah,” I said. “Safe.”

語法填空
At each stage of our life, we meet different kinds of people. The people (call) “best friends” are just these special friends.
In our childhood, “best friends” might have meant the persons who are always by our side, whether in the classroom in the dining hall. However, as we are getting older before, our definition (定义) of “best friends” changes. my opinion, best friends are those who love you for who you are and help you become who you should be. People in our life come and go, but some people stay. They are the people we should never lose.
True friends should be those who will never give you up when you need them most. They are always there (wait) for you and they love you when you forget to love (you). The best feeling in the whole world (be) knowing that there is a person who always prays for us and always keeps us in his thoughts. Two parents in very different circumstances (境况) told me their worries. One was a Google executive in New York City, who said, “I’m worried that my kids are growing up with too much money. How do I keep them from throwing their money around?” The second was a single mom from Los Angeles. She explained that her son was asking her for $150 to buy jeans so that he could fit in with the cool crowd, and she didn’t know what to do.
To both parents I gave the same answer: Start talking about the value of money, the same way you’d teach your kid to tell the truth or be kind to others. Make sure they know what matters most to your family when it comes to money. Yes, we could afford fancy jeans, but they’re not a priority for us.
When it comes to day-to-day lessons, the best way to teach your kids the value of a dollar is to give them actual dollars. When my daughter was 13, she wanted to go shopping with friends for back-to-school clothes. The other parents gave their girls a credit card or a debit card (借記卡) with a spending limit. Me? I embarrassed my daughter by handing her $50… in cash. The reason: I knew that when she got to the checkout line with more than $50 worth of goods, she’d have to make hard choices and put something back.
Additionally, sometimes it’s what you don’t do for your kid that counts. I will never forget the brave woman audience at an event who asked me the question: “Should I get my son an Amex Platinum card? All his friends use theirs to get into first-class airport lounges (等候室) when they travel.” “No,” I said. Always remember, you’re the parent. You set the rules. And the rules will determine how your kid values money in the future.

Jeffrey Hall, a teacher of Communications from the University of Kansas (KU), has used his research to define (明確) the exact amount of time necessary to make friends with someone. He’s also found how long it will take to deepen a relationship. His new study found that it takes around 50 hours of time together to go from being someone’s acquaintance (泛泛之交) to casual friend. It takes about 90 hours to go from being casual friends to friends, and more than 200 hours before considering someone a close friend or best friend.
But it isn’t spending just any kind of time together that deepens a friendship—hours spent working together, for example, don’t count as much as hours spent getting to know someone by hanging out, joking around, playing video games, and doing more playful activities. The study explains that these kinds of activities help us to form a deeper connection with someone. “We have to put that time in,” Hall said. “You can’t make a friend without any effort.”
The results of the study come from analysis of 355 responses to an online survey from adults who said they had moved in the last six months and were looking for new friends in their new homes. Survey participants were asked about new relationships as well as hours spent together and activities they did. They were then asked to rate their resulting relationships according to one of four stages: acquaintance, casual friend, friend and close friend.
The main conclusion that Hall came to is that making close friends takes serious effort. So if you want to have some best friends, you have to know that spending time with someone is the most important thing.
5. How long does it take to turn an acquaintance into a friend?
A. About 50 hours. B. About 90 hours. C. About 140 hours. D. About 200 hours.
6. The underlined words “that time” in Paragraph 2 refer to “time spent ”.
A. working together B. finding new friends
C. helping a new friend D. doing fun things together
7. Which may help deepen a friendship according to the study?
A. Trying to understand your friend’s feelings. B. Enjoying quality time with your friend.
C. Treating a new friend like a close one. D. Being generous to your friend.
8. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To solve a relationship problem. B. To introduce a teacher from KU.
C. To present the findings of a new study. D. To discuss the importance of friendship.
