During the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea in the 1950s, Chinese People’s Volunteers went to fight in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The story of the film is based on a skirmish that took place in the war during which a squad leader led a group of soldiers to rescue a scout. Amidst fierce artillery fire from the “United Nations army” with the U.S. as the principal participant, hundreds of thousands of young Chinese soldiers sacrificed their lives on the baはlefield.

Zooming in on one micro perspective of that war without the heroic scenes of fighting, the film depicts a small-scale conflict with no more than 10 soldiers on both sides, showcasing patriotism, perseverance, and friendship among the Chinese snipers. The film displays the tricks and tactics that are oたen part of the thrilling atmosphere of the life-and-death struggle. The immersive viewing experience

allows the audienc to feel the tension and cruelty of war.

The remains of 437 fallen members of Chinese People’s Volunteers arrived in China on March 28, 2014, more than 60 years aたer the war broke out. In 1950, a large number of young soldiers went to fight on a foreign baはlefield to resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea. Faced with the cruel environment and an enemy possessing advanced military strength, they composed a majestic epic in history. Some of them came back, while others who had sacrificed their lives stayed forever in that foreign land.

From interviews with several veterans of various military ranks, the film tells the story of ordinary young soldiers at that time. The film breaks the time-line narrative and uses the form of storytelling to document real war experiences and reflect the change of fate of those veterans. This style highlights the historical and artistic value of individual memory, thus reflecting the unique persective and sense of the collective memory which Chinese people have of that period.
