I returned home the other night, tired. My husband asked me how my evening was.“Great,” I told him. I had spent 90 minutes in a gym with 10 ping-pong tables and all kinds of players, all playing a little ball over the net. By 9 pm, I was excited, tired, satisfied. I had beaten two young men half my age and lostbattles against other competitors. To an observer, the night was common. To me, it was a lucky thing that I hadn't expected.

I had taken up ping-pong during college, and in my 30s took more advanced lessons. However, a serious accident hurt my leg, which made me unable to take exercise. Months later, I tried to play ping- pong but my leg pained for a week. I put the game out of my mind.

When I was 53, one day my bad leg was working a little bit better. Could ping-pong be possible for me, now—in my condition, at my age? I tried to play ping-pong again.

Ping-pong is a sport which requires endurance (耐力). Players need quick foot work and upper body movements to return balls, requiring faster response time than tennis.

Playing ping-pong offers benefits for the brain. A study of 164 women aged 60 and older showed that ping-pong improved cognitive (認知) function more than dancing, walking or gymnastics.“The great thing about our sport is that it can be played by anyone,” said Jimmy Butler, a four-time national USA Table Tennis Association winner.“I see 90-year-olds and 10-year-olds.”

Years passed and my endurance improved. People started to praise my shots. I won a game. Then I won again. These days, I feel wonderful. I believe this sport is the fountain (源泉) of youth.

24. What can we know about the writer from Paragraph 1?

A. She was the best player in the gym.  B. She felt disappointed when losing battles.

C. She lost games against two young men. D. She was satisfied with herself that evening.

25. What sport can improve cognitive function more effectively according to Paragraph 5?

A. Dancing.   B. Walking.   C. Ping-pong.   D. Gymnastics.

26. What is the advantage about ping-pong sport according to Jimmy Butler?

A. It is good for the brain.      B. It can be played by anyone.

C. It improves people's endurance.   D. It makes people physically strong.

27. What can be the best title for the text?

A. My Battle with My Illness      B. A Life-changing Accident

C. My Wonderful Evening Exercise   D. Ping-pong: the Fountain of Youth

C

How did the sea horse get its name? It's not hard to guess. The top half of this fish looks like a small horse. But looking at the sea horse's tail, you might think “sea monkey” is a better name. Then there's the sea horse's pouch (口袋).“Sea kangaroo” might also be a good name for this fish.

Sea horses live in warm ocean waters all over the world. They keep safe from other fish by hiding in plants and grasses that grow under the sea. They can also change colors to match their surroundings. A sea horse remains in one place for hours at a time by winding its tail around a plant. It feeds on live food, such as small shrimps. For a fish that doesn't move around much, the sea horse eats a lot—in just one day, a sea horse can eat 3,000 shrimps!

A sea horse keeps the same mate for its whole life, and it's the male sea horse that gives birth to baby sea horses. How does this happen? Baby sea horses start out as eggs, which come from the female's body.

The male carries the eggs in its pouch for about three weeks until they hatch (孵化). Soon after the babies are born, the female gives her mate a new set of eggs.

Sadly, the number of sea horses is becoming smaller. Why is this happening? Some places where sea horses once lived have been filled in to make new land. Also, many sea horses are caught and sold as aquarium (水族館) fish. This really is not a good idea because most sea horses don't live long in aquarium. The best place for a sea horse is the ocean.

28. The sea horse got its name because of its ___.

A. They grow at a very low speed.   B. Their food is becoming less and less.

C. They are killed by people for food.  D. Their homes are being destroyed.

In a small house in Belgrade, a teenage girl is drying her hair, while two others eat nearby. Several boys are having their temperature tested at the door. It is another busy day for Svratiste, which is Belgrade's first center for children who live on the streets. For years, the building has provided warmth and shelter for the city's most ignored children.

Since opening in 2007, Svratiste has welcomed hundreds of children, some as young as five years old. They come here to warm up, wash or eat. The kids that come to the center are all aged 5 to 15. What's common for all of them is that they work in the street and live in extreme poverty. Also very few ever go to school.

Svratiste's team of 13 social workers, psychologists and other experts have welcomed more than 1,400 children over the years. Money for the group's operations comes from donations. Some people regularly bring in clothes and other aid. The group recently set up another center in a new part of town. Usually, the two centers are open every day. But both were sealed off because of restrictions when the COVID-19 pandemic (流行病) started. When Belgrade reopened, most of the children came back.

The Svratiste team has tried to help the children get to know their city by visiting playgrounds and theaters. An important effort has been to include them in the education system and make sure they stay. Bosko Markovic, now 18, first came to Svratiste five years ago. With the center's help, he has finished high school and now wants to be a policeman. Therefore, Svratiste has made him a better person.

Studying is an art. Many students do not know how to do it properly, though. It seems as if they are always behind schedule when it comes to handing in homework, or preparing for a test.36

37 They put off their tasks until it is almost impossible to do well in them. There are many ways you can use, for example, better time management. However, for no delay (拖延), personal inner motivation (动力) is more important than outer motivation.

Following motivation, each person studies better in certain places. Libraries, cafes, studying rooms in schools, and more, are often referred to as good places to devote yourself to your tasks.38 In this way, you can see what works best for your brain. You will never know for sure where you study best until you try out many different locations.

Along the same lines as atmosphere, you should know how to get rid of distractions when studying. There is nothing worse than something breaking your flow when you working on your tasks.39 When you study, you need to get into a certain mind state and space helpful for studying.

Apart from the above, you should take neat notes.40 Also, you can memorize data your brain needs to use for tests. Taking good notes during class keeps you focused on the learning process. Having good attention during class can change your grade.

A. Managing time well is of great importance.

B. You can practice studying in different places.

C. Here are some ways to improve your study habits.

D. In fact, students need to have peace inside and out.

People release (放走) balloons for special occasions like memorial services and grand openings. It is fun and exciting. But it really causes great destruction to the environment and threatens the 61(life) of our wildlife.

When a balloon 62(fly) into the sky, it doesn't end up 63(stay) there. It eventually bursts and returns to the earth as ugly litter. Balloons can even travel thousands of miles and pollute the most remote and pure places. More 64(sad), they can present a threat to many animals. Birds, whales, turtles and other animals often mistake balloons 65 food, which can do damage to them becauseballoons contain 66(harm) chemicals. Balloons even kill animals. When an animal swallows (吞下) a balloon, it can block its intestinal tract (肠道), resulting in starvation.

Part of the reason why releasing balloons 67(forbid) in so few places is that some balloons do break down eventually. However, it takes about four years 68(break) down completely.

Watching hundreds of balloons slowly going up into the sky might give you a five-second thrill, 69 is it worth a bunch of dead animals and so many places full of rubbish? Absolutely not.70 we should do is to get creative and come up with alternative ways to celebrate.

Right as I was in my way to the main hall, I saw an old woman putting something next to a slept homeless man. I wanted to see what she had put some moneys there. Instead, I have just found a sandwich. The moment is very touching. The old woman just helped the man in need though his act might not be recognized.
