Chongqing Airlines stewardess Yan Xiangfeng is an uncompromising street snap enthusiast. Whether it is a busy business districts such as Monument to the People’s Liberation, Guanyin Bridge, or famous scenic spots such as Ciqikou Ancient Town and Hongyadong, all are the street snap backgrounds in her camera.
One weekend in March, Yan Xiangfeng came to Nanbin Road, wanting to take a set of photos of the old Marble Street, so as to include the modern and historical appearance of Nanbin Road in her photo album.
Yan Xiangfeng’s first stop was the Memorial Hall of Chongqing Imperial Palace Relics South Relocation on Nanbin Road. She ordered a cup of coffee at the Chongqing Turret Cafe in the Memorial Hall, with the Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains Map printed on the cup, which was just right for the spring mood at the moment. The cherry blossoms inside the memorial hall were already blooming. Standing under the trees and looking towards the river bank, she could enjoy the scenery of Yuzhong Peninsula and Jiangbeizui.
At the Bell Tower Plaza, pedestrians can cross the walkway down to the river. Taking a photo with the Raffles on the other side of the river through the archway at Chaotianmen is a way for many tourists to punch in. The Yangtze River and the Jialing River can be seen meeting in front of you from the viewing platform of the two rivers, which is what many netizens call the “Dual Hot Pot”. It’s even more of a tourist magnet at night.”
Standing on the viewing platform, Yan Xiangfeng held up the coffee in her hand and pointed to the skyscrapers across the street, saying, “With the skyscrapers of the Grand Theatre, Raffles and the Jiefangbei combined together, isn’t this a modern version of ‘Chongqing’s Thousand Mile River and Mountain Map’ ”
Not far from the two river viewing platform is the Customs Stone, representing the history of the opening of Chongqing. Step up from here, the characteristics of the old Marbles Street built on the mountain are presented to the fullest.
In the first batch of national tourism and leisure district list announced in January this year, old Marbles Street in South Coast District is on the list. Here, the eastern Sichuan dwellings and open port buildings mingle, and between the high and low, Chongqing Madame Tussauds, Changjiahui Ocean Park and Dongba Paper Workshop are presented in front of Yan Xiangfeng one after another. Among them, the wooden bridge extending from the Dongba Paper Workshop is one of the landmarks for tourists, especially at night when colorful lanterns made from Dongba paper will light up in rows, which has a different style.
Continuing upward, the classical and elegant Wang Family Compound appears in front of you, which was once the private residence of Wang Xinwen, a salt merchant in Sichuan and Chongqing. Nowadays, you can visit the Yushang Culture Exhibition here, read a book at the Popular Bookstore, and have a cup of coffee with a rich scent of flowers and fruits at the Few Gardens Café. The theater stage in the center of the courtyard also hosts traditional theater performances aperiodically.
In Old Street, there are always a lot of visitors lining up to take photos in front of the Gothic Church and Centennial Lane, which were restored in the original location, especially the glass curtain wall outside the church, which Yan Xiangfeng said has given birth to a large number of creative photos.
Strolling through the winding old streets and alleys, feeling the tradition and fashion, you can also meet surprises. There are many stories about the Old Street, and the story on the Nanbin Road is still long.
