How to cultivate reading character?

Abstract

There is no doubt that with the development of the economic globalization, more and more people realize the importance of English. For a student, it is very significant to cultivate listening, speaking, reading and writing capacity. In the following passage, I will talk about how I cultivate reading character in my classes in Danzao Primary School.

First of all, I motivate students’ interest. As Einstein, one of the most famous physicists saying,” Interest is the best teacher.” Interest is the first motivity of reading. When I have English class, I will give five minutes for my students in Class 1, Grade 3 and Class 2, Grade 3 to read a new story on the PPT in order to motivate their reading interest. Only if the students are absorbed in books will they read actively. Students are thirsty for their favourite books because they can satisfy their reading requirement. When students read more and more books, their writing and thinking capacity will get improved gradually.

On the other hand, I provide a variety of reading materials. According to students’ ages and hobbies, we can supply different kinds of books, such as classical storybooks, fairy tales and so on. This year I teach the students in grade three. Consequently, I provide the books like <The Three Little Pigs>, <Goldilocks and Three Bears>, <Little Red Riding Hood> and so on because these books fit them. An advantage of offering various materials is that we are able to satisfy students’ reading requirement and curiosity.

What’s more, I afford multiple reading ways. There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. Due to students’ characters, there are different reading ways. Firstly, students can select reading places and reading materials by themselves basing on their interest. Secondly, students are able to read with meor the classmates together so that they can ask some questions each other if they face some problems. Thirdly, students can read with parents after school. I appeal to parents to read with children for five minutes before sleeping every day. It can not only cultivate the relationship of parents and children, but help students share their opinions with parents which could improve their reading and speaking capacity.

Furthermore, I create a great reading environment for students to read. I decorate the reading corner in the classroom with some decorations. A great environment can not only motivate students’ curiosity, but stimulate their intrinsic motivation. Nothing is more important than to create an appropriate environment for the students to read.

Undoubtedly, I also increase students’ reading time. It is not easy for most students to increase reading scope because of the limited time. In school, students are busy having class while after school they have to do homework and do some exercises. Luckily, there are twenty-five minutes for students to read every afternoon in our school.Thanks for the limited time in school, students cherish the reading time very much.

Last but not the least, subvocalization is also a vital method for student to read. How to read silently? Students should read in heart instead of reading the words one by one or reading loudly. I tell the students that when they read silently, they ought to read as well as think in order to read in a steady and fast speed. Watering students with colorful pictures and beautiful words, there is no doubt that reading is the best gardener in students’ daily life.

In short, reading is the mother of study. It is high time that teachers cultivated students’ reading character with the development of the economic globalization.
