I'm Mariana from Mexico. After travelling to Asia, the cultural differences between Asia and Mexico first drew me in.The variety of cultures and countries in Asia was highly inter⁃esting.I wanted to experience this cultural shock!By the time I finally started planning my semester(学期)abroad,my decision fell on Shanghai in China as it caught my interest the most.
When I first arrived in Shanghai, I felt at a loss because everything felt so new and crazy. But after a while, I got used to it.I found many similarities be⁃tween Mexico City and Shanghai, which helped me get more accustomed(习惯的)to the culture. But the cuisine was still the biggest problem. In addition,China is a very high⁃tech country. You can almost use your phone for everything—ordering food in restaurants, communication, taxis, or travel⁃ling. Also, you need a VPN app to access(访问)your social media platforms from home.If you want to have less of a culture shock, inform yourself about the most vital apps in China.
I already made friends when I had my first class at university.I was the only Mexican exchange student, while the others were mainly from Germany or France. We had lots of fun together! Studying at Shanghai University was much easier than I expected. The courses and people were fascinating. Most of my lectures were business⁃related, but my fa⁃vourite class was culture⁃centred.
There were some moments when I was a bit homesick during my semester in China.Fortunately, Shanghai was a big city.I could find a little bit of“home”there. For instance,I visited Mexican restaurants where I met Mexican people.Over time, I got to know the Mexican community there more.It was so much fun!
The exchange experience made me more adventurous and more outgoing with new people. It helped me see things from a completely different perspective and be more grate⁃ful for little things in life.I also see my own culture differently now.I've become more open⁃minded and understandable towards things.I gained lifelong friends along the journey, im⁃proved my language skills and opened doors for future career opportunities.
