I am the former ambassador of Nepal to China, an old friend of the Chinese people. I read several articles in the December issue of China Today, for example,“Toward a Global Pandemic Strategy,” “The Path to Common Prosperity,” and “Rejuvenating a Lifeless Plateau Land.” When the sixth plenary session of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China was held last November, the phrase“common prosperity” garnered the world’s attention. I read the communique, which stated,“We should deepen reform and opening-up across the board, promote common prosperity for all, and build up our country’s strength in science and technology.” Your magazine’s special report can really help foreign readers get a glimpse of the path China is pursuing to achieve this ambitious goal – common prosperity. Another article discussed how the global pandemic is also a big concern of the international community. Despite China’s large territory and population, the Chinese government has been very successful in mobilizing the entire state machinery and all possible resources in the battle against the pandemic, proving itself to have the most effective governance in dealing with this public health crisis. However, the pandemic has also exposed the vulnerabilities and weaknesses of emergency response mechanisms in some developing countries like Nepal. China has provided the largest quantity of vaccines and life-saving supplies to my country, who emerged as a reliable and generous friend in need. Nepal and China enjoy a long and deep-rooted history of friendship, cooperation, and exchanges. The pursuit of common prosperity provides another field for Nepal and China to strengthen exchanges and cooperation.

My name is Fernando Lugris, the Uruguayan ambassador to China. Last November, I attended the High-level Session of the 20th Anniversary of China’s Accession to the WTO in Shanghai. In the face of the so-called“deglobalization trend,” China remains committed to a mutually beneficial opening-up policy, opening its doors to provide other countries with more opportunities to markets, investment, and growth. Traditionally, Uruguay has been a defender and even –despite its small size – a promoter of multilateralism. I read China Today’s stories of “Joining Hands with Global Partners to Create a Better Future” in the October issue and “Working Together to Protect Our Planet” in the November issue. As the authors of the articles stated, the pandemic has not dampened the desire of the international community for exchanges and cooperation.
According to my own experience and observation, China has shown its strong governance ability in gaining control of the pandemic within its borders and achieving a subsequent economic restart. During this period, it has successfully held several grand events like the 2021 China International Fair for Trade in Services(CIFTIS) and the fourth China International Import Expo (CIIE), and I was present at both of these events. In my opinion, several new aspects of the economy that have shown strong resilience include the digital parts of the trade in services and low-carbon, resource-efficient green economy.
