Chongqing, the first stop of "Origins of Brazil" Cultural Class in China

On October 25, the Project “Origins of Brazil”, a collaboration between the Embassy of Brazil in China and UNESCO Beijing, was launched in Chongqing Renmin Primary School and Yuzhong District Dejing Primary School. Larrisa Costa, head of the Cultural Section of the Embassy of the Federative Republic of Brazil brings students a fun "Origins of Brazil" Cultural Class to share the project content and rich Brazilian culture.

According to Larrisa Costa, the Embassy of Brazil in China attaches great importance to people-to-people exchanges with China. In 2019, the Embassy organized over 200 Brazilian cultural events in 20-plus cities in China. However, due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the exchange of artists between Brazil and China was almost impossible in 2020. The Embassy of Brazil in China, therefore, began to reconsider how to promote bilateral exchanges, and the Project “Origins of Brazil” was born to promote dialogue between civilizations and deepen amity and exchanges between China and Brazil. The project is divided into four parts: a design competition, a publication of a children's book, a curriculum, and a painting competition.

According to Larrisa Costa, in the first phase, the Embassy of Brazil in China collaborated with Tsinghua University, launched a design competition seeking inspirational illustrations that could be used in the childrens book. In the second phase, the winning designs from the competition will be made into a childrens book, which has entered the publishing process and is expected to be published in January 2022. The third phase of the project begins with a series of small cultural classes to introduce Brazilian culture in primary schools in China, starting with the Chongqing Renmin Primary School. Primary school students from all over the country will also be invited to participate in the painting competition in the fourth phase of the project.

“Brazil and China have had in-depth exchanges in trade and politics, but they still know little about each other's culture, so the small cultural classes are the most important part of the Project “Origins of Brazil”. We want to reach out to the society and children, and let them know more interesting information about Brazil.” Larissa Costa said that as the first stop of the Project “Origins of Brazil” in Chinese elementary schools, the Chongqing Renmin Primary School is an outstanding school in Chongqing and will be a good start for the Project “Origins of Brazil”.

Larrisa Costa said that the Project “Origins of Brazil” is the most important one of Brazil's cultural projects from 2021 to 2022. It chooses Chongqing as its first stop, not only because Brazil enjoys deep amity with Chongqing, but also because Chongqing is a city with prominent performance in politics, economy, and education. Next year marks the 200th anniversary of Brazilian Independence. She, therefore, hopes to introduce some tips about Brazils culture, history, and geography to Chinese friends through the Project “Origins of Brazil”.

In the “Origins of Brazil” cultural classes of Chongqing Renmin Primary School and Dejing Primary School, Larrisa Costa affectionately introduced Brazil's history, language, ecology, sports, and other aspects, led the students into the Brazilian world to experience the customs of South America, understand Brazils style and features in an interesting way and Brazils culture, as well as enjoy a fantastic journey to Brazil. At the end of the event, Larrisa Costa also invited the students to participate in the painting competition and encouraged them to submit paintings about Brazil to the Embassy of Brazil in China. The students who win the competition will have the opportunity to receive the award from the Embassy of Brazil in China.

In these two primary schools, the Project “Origins of Brazil” team watched splendid art performances, deeply learned about children's study in the community, and participated in and experienced Chinese traditional culture such as Guzheng, Chinese painting, calligraphy, and dragon dance.

As the first primary school in Chongqing established an international department, Chongqing Renmin Primary School has unfolded plenty of international exchange events in Europe, America, and Asia. Liu Yonghong, vice principal of Chongqing Renmin Primary School, said that the Project “Origins of Brazil” launched in Chongqing Renmin Primary School showcases great "people-to-people exchanges". It is believed that the event will not only promote Chinese childrens understanding of Brazil's history, geography, and culture, but more importantly, plant the seeds of China-Brazil amity in the childrens mind, build a communication bridge between these two countries, and transmit the cultural values of mutual respect and harmonious coexistence.

According to Wang Wei, principal of Dejing Primary School, this event has opened a window for the children to see the world, helped them understand the various cultural difference via learning different cultural background, thus they could understand the profound connotation and epoch values of Xi Jinping's vision on a community with a shared future for mankind.
