Hello, everybody. Im Teresa Stone. Im so glad to meet you here. Today Im going to share my travelling experience with you.
As a photographer, I have always loved to travel. The first place I visited was Africa. In Africa, there was no running water or toilets, but that did not matter to me. I loved the excitement of seeing animals run freely in the wild. It was so much fun. I still remember the adventure of camping when I was on Safari. Besides Africa, I have visited many other lands, such as Spain, Italy, Scotland, Japan and Thailand. People often ask me why I love to travel. How couldnt anyone love travelling? There is such an attraction in seeing new things, meeting new people and tasting new foods. However, I will admit travelling is very expensive. There are so many costs of travelling. I have to pay for the hotel room and food. In addition, tourist attractions are usually expensive. Although I complain about the high cost of travelling, I wouldnt choose to spend my money any other ways.

W: Neither. I wanted a T-shirt. But by that time, the ones on sale were all gone. So I bought one at the regular price. And you know what? Vicky didnt buy anything!

Have you ever dreamed about a trip into space? Seeds of some vegetables and crops are a lot luckier than you, as they have travelled to space and back.
China is among the three countries in the world that carry out agricultural research in space. The others are Russia and the US. Since 1987, China has sent about 1,000 species of seeds into space. These include green peppers, tomatoes, carrots and wheat.
“Conditions in outer space such as radiation and low gravity can cause big changes in the seeds,” said Chinese researcher Jin Xing. But not all seeds are better after going to space. After returning to Earth, the best seeds are selected. These seeds produce much more and also grow faster than normal seeds.
Some people doubt the safety of these “space vegetables” because some of their genes are changed during the trip to space.
But Jin holds a more positive view. He said, “No new genes are introduced to the space vegetables, and they are definitely safe.”

W: Youll be my personal assistant.
M: Personal assistant? I dont think youll be able to afford me.

From Monday to Friday most people are busy working or studying, but in the evenings and on weekends they are free to relax and enjoy themselves. There are many different ways for them to spend their free time.
Almost everyone has some kind of hobbies. It may be anything from collecting stamps to making model airplanes. Some hobbies are very expensive, but others dont cost anything at all. Some collections are worth a lot of money. Others are valuable only to the owners.
I know a man who has a coin collection worth $250. He is very happy about his purchase and thinks the price is reasonable. On the other hand, my youngest brother collects matchboxes. He has almost 600 of them, but I doubt if they are worth any money. However, to my brother they are extremely valuable. Nothing makes him happier than to find a new matchbox for his collection.
That is what a hobby means, I guess. It is something we like to do in our spare time simply for fun. The value in dollars is not important. We do it for the pleasure it gives us.

So many people are busy preparing for Christmas. Today on our show we invite our listeners to slow down while we play holiday music released this year. That is Pie Jesu sung by ten-year-old Jackie of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Jackie was discovered earlier on the television show “Americas Got Talent”. She did not win the competition. But she did get a record deal. Her Christmas album, O Holy Night, has sold one million copies or more. Billboard magazine says Jackie is the countrys top-selling new artist.
The number one album on Billboards Top Two Hundred is a holiday recording. Scottish singer Susan Boyles The Gift has been in that position for four weeks. Boyle launched her career in January of last year. She performed on the television show “Britains Got Talent”. Her performance was posted online. Her beautiful voice and shy personality got the attention of huge numbers of people. She became famous almost overnight. Finally lets enjoy Susans singing “The First Noel” from her album, The Gift.
Im Doug Johnson. I hope you enjoyed this holiday program. If you have a question about our program, write to Johnson@aol.com. We might answer your question on this show.

Good morning, everyone. My name is Helen Green. Now, Id like to say something about my job. Last year I worked as a secretary to the general manager of a large company in our town. I was happy and satisfied with my job. Then suddenly our company was hit by economic troubles. Most of the employees knew nothing about it until one day we were told that we had to leave. Although I was very sad and worried, I soon overcame the shock. I had worked for many years and I knew how to do my job well. I felt quite confident that I would have little difficulty in quickly finding a similar position with another company before long. I applied for several jobs. But I was told that I was too experienced and they couldnt pay me the high salary I had earned before. I had been out of a job for almost two months. Then I saw a small advertisement in the newspaper one evening. A shopkeeper was wanted. I realized that I had no choice but to accept what was offered to me. However, Im not tired of my present job because Im still working. What about you? Do you like your jobs?

M: I just cant decide where to go. Its not an easy decision to make.

Theres a holiday next week and I cant decide what to do.
Last year I went north to the mountains. Everything was beautiful, but it is too cold this time of year. And its really too far to go for a short holiday. I have decided that this is not a good time to go to the mountains. But I do want to go some place.
Perhaps this would be a good chance to go to the beach. I like to go for walks along the seashore in the warm sunshine and watch the water. Its only about eighty miles and I can drive there in over an hour. After thinking it over, I guess Ill plan to go to the beach next week.
Oh, heres a letter from Ben. He says he is going to his house in the mountains for the holidays next week, and he wants me to go with him. After giving it some more thought, I guess it wasnt really too cold last year, and perhaps it might rain at the seashore and then I wouldnt enjoy it at all. The mountains are only 300 miles away. I think Ill write to Ben right now and tell him Ill go with him.

M: Well, why dont you do that?
W: I would, but I dont know. Im taking a really great physics class this semester. I totally love it.
M: Then why not do physics?
W: So I could be the next Albert Einstein, right? I dont know about that, either. I also want to take some French classes. Although, if I take French, then I cant really take the physics. And I mean, theater still is fun.

W: How many hours do you spend on the Internet every day?
M: I spend about l to 3 on a school day working and probably about half an hour just surfing. And on a weekend, I would spend about 2 to 10 hours working and about two hours surfing. I try to limit my time. I dont want to get addicted to the Internet.
W: You do all the design work?
M: Yes. And my father handles the marketing. And if you go to any major search engine, and type in “web-designing company”, we will come in the top 10.
W: And do you know those marketing things?
M: My father is teaching me, so I dont have to be dependent on anybody.
W: What would you do if the staff dont treat you as a grown-up?
M: I simply let them go. You cant do business with someone who doesnt take you seriously.

A paperless class means that teachers dont use paper in or after class. All of the students assignments were posted on a web page, so for each of their essays they had to write, students could just go online and read the descriptions of the assignment and all their requirements, and then they could either type them up and e-mail them to teachers or they could type them up directly in the screen on the web, so that a teacher could do all of the grading for the papers online. Its easier for teachers because they can just highlight something and make it red and its much quicker than like circling it and writing “spelling”. Once teachers get in the habit of doing it with the mouse, it goes very quickly, and they can also make a comment by changing the font or the size, and type directly in the text.
Most of the students liked it, but there was a small majority that usually when they were late, or whenever they want to just like slipping a paper under the teachers door, they couldnt do that, because if their paper was late, the computer doesnt lie.

W: I like to go to fashion shows. They give you some ideas about what kinds of clothes are coming into fashion.
M: But I dont think those clothes are practical for everyday wear.
W: I think were beginning to see some practical Italian ready-to-wear collections being shown these days. And they reach the American stores just a few weeks after the major fashion shows.
M: This should be good news for Americas career women. They are this countrys most eager consumers of Italian styles. Its time for the Italian designers to figure out that only when they make fashion more practical will they have a bigger market here.

Many years ago, Manhattan Island, which is a part of the great city of New York, was covered with forest. Along its shores were small Indian villages. In fact, Indians were the only people on the island until 1609. In the spring of that year, Henry Hudson, a famous sea captain, arrived there. He was trying to find a short way to the Far East for Dutch traders. His ship was very small. It was only about the size of one of the lifeboats you see on modern ocean liners today. Of course, Henry Hudson did not find a shorter way to the Far East. Instead he reached the shores of North America. He came to the mouth of the large waterway now called the Hudson River.
As he came near to the shore, he saw an Indian village. The Indians seemed friendly. They even came out to meet the ship and offered their furs to the Dutch sailor in exchange for glass beads and other small things. When Henry Hudson returned to Holland, he showed everyone the fine furs. He told of the rich soil and the streams filled with fish. Later Dutch traders began to send many ships to the rich new world across the sea.

W: The subway? But is there a subway station next to my hotel? I have to go between the conference center and the hotel several times a day…
M: No worries. Theres a subway station at the conference center, and a bus from your hotel to the conference center that takes only five minutes.
W: Is it expensive to go on the subway?
M: You can get a daily pass that will give you unlimited travel for the whole day for about six dollars. Otherwise, you pay by trip, which is about fifty cents to two dollars each trip, depending on how far you go.
W: Is it easy to get lost?
M: No, no… There are only two lines: one that goes in a circle and one that goes in a straight line.

Good morning, everyone. Heres the weather forecast for the whole country until dawn tomorrow. In the south of the country, there will be thunderstorms in some places, especially in the southeast. In the north, things are a little better, with only the odd shower here and there, but generally a fairly dry day with temperatures up to 23 degrees centigrade. Moving into the evening, any clouds there should clear up and most parts of the north should have a sunny evening and a clear night, with temperatures dropping to near freezing in exposed areas. Tonight in the south, it should stay the same, still some quite heavy showers in some places and thunderstorms in the southeast. Temperatures in the south during the day are around about average for this time of year—thats about 20 degrees centigrade and remaining fairly mild during the night, dropping to around 15 degrees in the early hours of the morning. At last, the outlook for tomorrow: little change in the south but it will continue to get brighter in the north. Well, thats it from me. I am John. Have a nice day. Bye.

I saw a really good video last night when I was taking care of the kids. My sister asked me to look after my two nieces for a couple of hours while she went to the doctors. Theyre both nine years old; theyre twins. I was a bit tired but I know they love watching films, so on my way to the house I went to the video shop and rented a Disney classic. Id seen it myself 20 years ago when I was their age, so I was sure theyd enjoy it, and I was right. My nieces love dogs and as the film is about two dogs who fall in love, they sat in front of the TV for over an hour without moving! Its a complicated love story because one of the dogs lives in the rich part of town and is very carefully looked after and has everything a dog could want, but the other is a street dog who lives on the poor side of town and has nothing.
So its a bit like Romeo and Juliet! But of course its a Disney film, so although there are some sad moments when we all cried, theres a happy ending. Everybody whos seen the film always remembers the scene when the two dogs are eating a plate of spaghetti which ends in a kiss!

Text 10
Nowadays, more and more people are tired of talking about work topics, not necessarily because they are lazy, but because the pressure is too big or the job is so boring that people dont like it. However, somebody has to do ordinary jobs such as cleaning streets. The cleaners play an important part in the city environment. On one hand, they must get up in the early morning every day to clean the street while we are still sleeping. On the other hand, they also suffer from less respect and lower pay, working all day in the street no matter whether it is windy, rainy or snowy. Nobody could imagine what a bad environment we would have if there were no cleaners in the city. Maybe we would soon be drowned in the mountain of rubbish. Worse still, if there were no change about that, diseases would spread at a very quick speed. Is there anything that can be worse than this?
Therefore, we can say the smallest and the most ordinary job is also a necessary part to keep the society going smoothly. Those who do those most significant jobs should get respect as much as those being engineers or teachers.

Now, let me tell you something about my after-work activities. Im interested in sports, and I run about 3 miles every day. I particularly enjoy cross-country running, where I have to run across fields, jump over streams and so on. While Im running I think about all sorts of things, and at the end of a run Im sometimes surprised to find that Ive managed to solve a problem that was on my mind.
Next year Im going to try the London Marathon. Its a long and hard race—26 miles, or 42 kilometers—and its tough, but I really want to do it.
Im interested in climbing, too. Ill never become an expert climber, but I know what Im doing in the mountains. I successfully completed a course in snow and ice climbing when I was younger, and Ive done some easy climbs in the Alps during the last few years. My wife doesnt share my interest in mountains. She agreed to go climbing with me once, but she found that she felt ill as soon as she got above 1,000 meters, so we decide to follow different hobbies.

People in different countries have their own ways of celebrating May Day. In todays program, Ill share some ways of celebrating May Day in some countries.
In France, people touch cows that are walking on the street. They also drink milk directly from cows on the morning of the day. They do that for good luck.
In Greece, children go from door to door and sing songs of spring on May Day. They usually receive something to eat from their neighbors.
In England, children visit from house to house. They bring flowers in exchange for pennies. But they dont use the money to buy anything. They throw them into a wishing well.
In Italy, boys often sing to the girls they love.
So how do people in the US celebrate it? Well, in the US, children ring doorbells of relatives and friends and then run away, leaving flowers there as a surprise.
Thats all for today. Thanks for your listening.

W: Ill go to New Zealand this afternoon, but Im too tired to drive and the bus is so crowded.
M: No problem. Ill drop you off at the train station on my way to work.
Text 3

M: What? Today is my birthday? Ah, yes. Today is my birthday. Thank you for remembering it. Come on in.

M: AIDS has spread all over the world.
W: But medicine has been advanced much. I think it can be cured completely in the future.
Text 5
W: Well, the size of the shirt fits me. But I dont think the color suits me.
M: It seems to me that you are very hard to please.
Text 6
M: Hi, Jessie. I thought youd be on your way to work by now. Are you taking the day off?
W: Oh, no! I dont have to leave home so early since I started working by subway.
M: Oh, is that so?
W: Yes, I can spend an extra half an hour at home and still be on time for work. Its really very good, I mean this subway.
M: Isnt it expensive?
W: Well, yes, a bit. But its so convenient. My office is not far from the station there.
Text 7
W: Hello, Mr Smith. I havent seen you for weeks. Where have you been all this time?
M: Oh, Ive just been to Japan on business.
W: How many countries have you been to?
M: Pretty close to 60 countries now. I guess Im a real world traveller.
W: Well, if you arent, I dont know who is.
M: Maybe someday Ill settle down here. I just cant seem to stay in one place for very long.
W: How many years have you been travelling?
M: Ive been with the company for 25 years and travelling all the time.
Text 8
M: Betty, you speak several languages, dont you?
W: Yes, I speak Spanish and French.
M: And what helps you most in learning those languages?
W: Well, I studied both languages in high school, and Im still studying Spanish here at the university, but I think that travel probably helps me most. You see, Ive been lucky that Ive lived in Europe. Believe me, I didnt speak very well before I moved there.
M: Youre right. Practice is very useful.
W: I always go to the movies, and whenever I can, I watch TV or listen to the radio in the language Im trying to learn.
M: But I think without some knowledge of the language first, you cant understand all these.
W: Sure. First its a good idea to study grammar and vocabulary.
M: And listening and reading.

M: Lucy, youre back. What classes did you have?
W: Well, I had English from 9:00 to 10:30, art from 1:30 to 2:00, and math from 2:30 to 4:00.
M: What do you think of the teachers?
W: To be honest, I like all of them, except the math teacher. Though he must be quite young, he seems like an old person. Hes so boring!
M: Thats too bad. How is your English teacher?
W: She is great. In todays class, she gave us a lecture on how to be a good student. She told us not to push ourselves hard for exams, and to pay more attention to communicating than memorizing.
M: Did she give you any homework?
W: Not today. She wanted us to relax tonight instead of doing homework.
M: No wonder you like the class so much.

Last Friday evening Jack was driving home from work in his car, thinking of the wonderful meal waiting for him at home. He was driving along a road at 50 kilometers an hour when another car came out of a side road quickly. The man tried to brake his car, but it was too late. Unavoidably, there was an accident. There was damage to both cars, and both Jack and the other man were hurt. At that time, another car was following Jacks. It stopped quickly and a man and a woman came out of the car. They ran to the damaged cars and pulled Jack and the other man out because they thought the gas might catch fire and burn the two men. Then they called the hospital and police. Soon an ambulance came and took the two injured men to the hospital. Then two policemen came and began to measure and asked the witnesses questions about the accident. A truck came and pulled the two cars off the road.

M: A small town just by the seaside in the southeast of England. And where I live is about half an hours walk from the beach.
W: OK. What kind of place is your town?
M: Its very very small. Its normally really busy in the summer, when there are tourists coming from all over the UK. When the sun is shining, you can go to the beach. Its really good.
W: Yeah, sounds like a great place. How far is it from London?
M: Ah, it takes about one hour by car. But it will double the time if you ride a train.

M: Havent you heard that he quit his job?

W: He had been working here for twenty years.
M: But the boss has been finding fault with him recently.
W: I saw the boss get angry and take 100 dollars from his salary just because he was late for 5 minutes.
M: He has found a better job with a big company.
W: Thats a relief. John always helps me whenever I am in trouble.

M: Drive along this street, turn right, turn left, keep straight, and then Ill see the road sign.
W: Thats right.
M: Are you sure that I wont go into any one-way streets?
W: Well, I dont think you will. I dont see any cars around here. Where is your car?
M: I parked it over there. You see?
W: Oh, no. Youd better move it before a policeman sees you parking there.
M: Why? I dont see any “No Parking” signs.
W: But youre parking in a bus zone.
M: Here comes a policeman. Id better go. Thank you, miss. Oh, by the way, how long will it take me to get to the museum?
W: About half an hour.
M: Thanks again. Youve been very helpful.
W: Hurry up, or youll get a ticket.

Good morning, everyone. Welcome to our tour!
This morning, we are going to take you to some points of historical interest in the city. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to ask. If you look out of the window on your right, youll see the Grange, one of the oldest buildings in the city. It was built 200 years ago. Perhaps the most interesting thing is that every Saturday afternoon, you can come and watch people bake bread. On your left is a university. This university building is 125 years old. We will be stopping in a moment at Bridgeton Castle. This castle was built by Henry Pellatt for his young wife. He bought almost all of the building materials from England. Notice the beautiful glass windows. Unfortunately, Henrys young wife became ill and died before the castle was completed. Henry became so unhappy that he left the castle and returned to England.

W: How did it happen?
M: I was riding along on my bike. When a little boy ran toward me, I turned the handlebar immediately to avoid hitting him. When I did, I knocked into a wall and fell off.
W: Let me take a look at your left arm first. Now your right arm. Your right arm is swollen a little.
M: I think its probably broken and Id like to have an X-ray taken if you think its necessary.
W: Yes. Let me take the X-ray for you.

W: What do you think of our city London?
M: Well, to be frank, I like living here. London is a beautiful city. I have adapted myself to studying here very well.
W: Great, where do you live? In the school dormitory?
M: Well, when I first arrived, I found a host family and stayed with them for three months. The family was very friendly to me, but there was too much noise and it was difficult for me to concentrate on my study.
W: Oh, thats a problem.
M: So after that I moved out and rented a small house with two other students near the university. Our new place is much better.
W: Good. What do you major in?
M: Engineering. I found the main difficulty I still have is with the language.
W: Dont worry. Im sure you can overcome it soon.
M: Thank you.

Paul, a salesman from London, was driving past a sports car parked outside a supermarket, when he saw it start to roll slowly down the hill. Inside the car were two young girls on the passenger seat, but no driver. Paul stopped quickly, jumped in front of the sports car and tried to stop it, pushing against the front of the car. Another man who was standing nearby got into the car and put on the handbrake, saving the girls from injury.
It was at this point that Paul noticed his own car rolling slowly down the hill and going too fast for him to stop it. It crashed into a bus at the bottom of the hill and was so badly damaged that it had to be pulled away to a garage.
As this was not bad enough, Paul now found he had no one to blame. He was so busy chasing his car that he didnt get the name of the driver of the sports car, who just came out of the supermarket and drove away without realizing what had happened.

When I was at university I was friendly with a girl named Alice who came from a very wealthy family. We were both in the same French class and we used to study together quite often. Anyway, at the end of the term, Alice failed her French and several other courses. She was so upset that she made herself quite ill and her parents decided to take her on a trip to cheer her up. And they invited me to go along too. It was a really expensive ship going from Southampton through to the eastern Mediterranean. Id certainly never had an opportunity like that before—and I dont suppose I ever shall again. Well, my main memory of that holiday is boring. Alice was getting better but was still too low to want to talk much or to do anything except sleep. We had amazing trips on the shore every second day or so but otherwise we were at sea with nothing much to do except sit on the ship and eat meals. The average age of the other passengers was at least sixty and I hadnt even taken much to read.

Good evening, everyone. Do you know at what age a child becomes an adult? The answer depends on your culture or religion.
First, in some North American Indian cultures, a boy became a man around the age of 13. At that time, he would go into the woods alone, without food or water, for several days. When he returned safely, he became an adult man.
In Japan today, young people become legal adults at age 20. Each year on January 15, they wear traditional clothes, listen to speeches, and visit old friends.
Finally, in the United States, the passage into adulthood takes several years. American teenagers can get a drivers license at the age of 16. The legal age of adulthood is 18. However, they must wait until age 21 to buy alcohol.
OK, thats all for my lecture. You are required to write a summary of this class.

Good morning, everyone. Its my honor to give you our report. These days weve been looking at ways to make shopping less tiring. You know, a whole day at the shops really wears people out. Carrying shopping around is very tiring, and we looked at ways to avoid that. Our group considered a number of brilliant ideas. We thought of hiring out small electrically-driven cars to shoppers, but we came up against problems of space. There just isnt enough room. We also thought about those moving walkways, like the ones you see at the airports. But we decided it against then though, because they require a major redesign of the whole center. What we have actually come up with is a new technology. When shopping you can pick what you want and then just leave it on the shelf. That way, you dont need to carry your heavy shopping around with you all day. When you want to go home, our computer system automatically sends everything youve bought to your exit point, and you can pick it up there.

W: I see. Is that the same reason that you left Chengdu for Shanghai last year?
M: Thats it. I was a coach at a gym then. Actually, I came to China after graduating from college in Chicago. Ive been in China for three years. I had three different jobs already and Shanghai is the second city I live in.
W: Thats amazing. So what will you do in Guangzhou?
M: Im pretty good at photography. I have signed with a tour magazine as a photographer. Its my dream job.
W: Thats cool. I really appreciate working with you this year.

One kind of vacation that many Americans enjoy is camping. When summer comes each year, millions of Americans drive to the countryside where they can find places to camp. The national parks, many of which are in the mountains, are favorite camping places. Campers enjoy the fresh air, the lakes and the forests which they find in these parks. And those things cannot be attained in big cities. A lot of campers go swimming and fishing. They can also find many kinds of animals and plants in the parks. They get a lot of fun in watching the animals and plants in the wild. Mostly, campers relax. They enjoy a change from their busy lives in the city. Most people camp in tents which they set up in their camp sites. In their tents, they dont have many conveniences which are easy to get in their homes, such as electricity, hot water and tap water. Tent campers have a very simple life. But they really enjoy life in the mountains where theyre away from the man-made noises and heavy traffics in big cities. When night falls, its so quiet that sounds of frogs, birds, and even insects can be heard. Then people can have a good sleep with the sound of nature.

M: Mary, youve been to many places in China right? Tell me about your experiences, please.
W: OK. The first year I came to China I visited Chengdu. Its a great city with very delicious food and the folks are very friendly. A year later, I went to Chongqing where the climate is much like that of Chengdu but a lot hotter in summer. That was in 2012. I spent another year in Chongqing. I was an English teacher teaching oral English at a middle school as what Im doing here in Hangzhou.
M: I heard youve been to Taiwan as well.
W: Yes, I have. In 2014, I went there with one of my college friends. Its very beautiful. I really love the beaches there.

W: Oh, thats amazing. They must have a very good relationship.
M: Right, but what surprised me most was that the girl he married went to the same primary school with me. But I didnt know her then.

W: 15 hours. Spain is so far from here.

Good morning, everyone. Its my honor to give you the morning report today. Id like to talk about Mozart first. Mozart was a world famous musician and composer. He was born in Austria in 1756. Before the age of four he had shown great music talent so his father decided to let his son take music lessons. When he was five years old, he started composing music. By his early teens Mozart had mastered the piano and violin and he was writing symphonies and operas. His first major opera was performed in Milan in 1770 when he was only 14. In 1781, he left for Vienna where he was in great demand as both a performer and a composition teacher. But the life was not easy because he was a poor businessman and his finance was always in a bad state. His music for the next 10 years was not popular. And he eventually fell back on his teaching job for a living. He died in 1791 at a very young age. Although he lived only a short life, he composed over 600 works. His works are a valuable heritage of all people around the world.

W: That makes sense.
M: We have many models of fridges for sale. This one is only 400 dollars.
W: Ah, I think its the right size. I can place it right beside my table in the kitchen. But I dont like silver. Do you have other colors of this type?

M: Well. First, dont be shy at speaking English. Dont be afraid to make mistakes. Youll learn from them.
W: Oh. Thats a problem. Im so nervous around people.
M: Second, you have to listen to and read English every day. Repeat what you hear, from groups of words to sentences. Youll benefit a lot from that.
W: A good method. Ill try it. What else?
M: Finally, be patient. As the saying goes “Rome wasnt built in a day.”
W: Got it. What are you up to now?
M: Im learning French. I can talk with French people for a while now.
W: Cool. What other languages can you speak?
M: Japanese and German. And Chinese, of course.

Good morning, everyone. Today Im so excited to introduce a new bicycle to you. At present theres a new type of bicycle on the market. Its made of plastic. A lot of people worked on the development of this new bicycle. The original idea came from an engineer in Sweden in 2011. He designed it and then he asked for help from American as well as British industry. It finally came out to us four years after this incredible idea. As it has a plastic frame, the bicycle is more flexible than those metal ones. This means that its more comfortable to ride and quieter when you are riding it on the road. And of course it will never rust. It can be used for many years. Besides it wont need oil at the center of its wheels which may save you a lot of time and money. In spite of its plastic frame, its very strong indeed. Its in fact as strong as mountain bikes. Whats more about it? Because of the special plastic used, the bicycle wont be damaged by sunshine or rain drops. Maybe fire is the only thing you need keep the bicycle away from.

Good morning, everyone. My name is Maria Brown and Im the new training director for the company. Today I would like to talk about the future possibilities for language training. First, we need to look at who need language training in our company. As you can see clearly on the table, fifty percent of our employees already speak a second language. However, there is a real need to increase that percentage since our clients are all over the world. Second, we need to consider what system we are using for language training. You all know that our Tokyo branch has been using a new training system this year. And our Rome and New York branches are about to use it next week. So far, the results are not clear but it seems that the new system is working efficiently and employees who are using it are quite impressed with it. My final point is about budgeting; we currently spend 1.2 million dollars a year on all forms of training. Our company will increase it by twenty percent in the future, which means more language-teaching specialists can be hired and more learning activities can be held.

W: How did you collect the stamps then?
M: Well, I just bought the new issues at the post office and put them into my stamp album. Thats all. How about you?
W: I buy new issues on the Internet. In the meanwhile, I do something else, and narrow down collections to one topic, that is Chinese characters. I collect Chinese and foreign stamps.
M: That sounds exciting.
W: Yes. Besides, I also take part in some topic stamp exhibitions in order to make well-organized collections. I visited libraries, attended lectures, and exchanged experiences with my fellow collectors.
M: Youre very particular in this hobby. Because youre deeply engaged in it.
W: Thats right. What are your hobbies?
M: I like travelling and listening to music, etc.
W:They are also good hobbies I think. Next time Ill come to listen to you talk about them in detail. Now I have to go back to study.
Text 10
Tom just graduated from high school and he spent two weeks on his grandfathers farm this summer before going to the university. He had never been to a farm before and this was the first time in his life that he had seen such animals as geese, sheep, rabbits, dogs, and so on. The first morning he got up almost before daylight to watch his grandma milk the cows. Then he wanted to feed the other animals. Grandpa let him feed a horse and told him not to stand behind the horse because it might kick him. Very soon, the horse would follow Tom all over the farm all day. And several days later he could even ride the horse for a while. Tom also learned to feed the chickens and collect the eggs and put them in a basket. He liked to look after the pigs which he didnt want to come near in the past. Every day he enjoyed himself very much with the animals. At last the day came when he had to go back home to go to university. That was a sad day for him to say goodbye to all the animals on the farm.

My wife and I go to the theater whenever we can. But before we buy tickets, we like to know if the play is good or bad. When a new play opens, we usually read the newspaper to get information about it. Last week a new play opened at the theater. The newspaper story said it was very interesting, so we decided to go on Saturday night.
My wife took a long time to make up her mind what to wear and we left our house a little late. By the time we got to the theater, the first act had already begun. We were sorry we missed part of the play, because the rest of it was very funny. The newspaper had been right. It was very good.
After the play, we met some friends we hadnt seen for a long time. They wanted to go to a night club. It had been many years since my wife and I had gone dancing, but I finally agreed. By the time we got home, it was about two oclock in the morning. Im not accustomed to staying out so late and I was extremely tired.
When I was younger, I didnt have the money to go out for an evening like this. Now that I can afford it, I dont have the energy to really enjoy it.

W: Good evening, Steven. Thank you for being with us.
M: Thank you for having me.
W: So Steven, as a guitar player, how would you describe your music? Is it a kind of folk rock, or a mixture of pop and rock?
M: Well, I just want it to be real rock, hard and solid.
W: Has it changed since your first record?
M: No. Im happy with what I can do.
W: Where are your favorite places to play?
M: Oh, I love Australia. People here are all smiles.
W: So no one throws things onto the stage in Australia?
M: People throw things everywhere. You cant stop that.
W: What do you think of the people who download your music from the Internet?
M: Well, the truth is that people who download your music are people who are interested in your music. And if youre upset about that, then whats the point?
W: Thanks, Steven. Before we finish, can you offer any tips on becoming a better songwriter?
M: Stop listening to other peoples songs. Be yourself.

M: And Aunt Jane. Shes looking so old.
W: Thats not too surprising. She must be in her eighties by now.
M: Does she still live in Boston?
W: No. She moved to Atlantic City a few years ago.
M: Well, its been great talking to you, but I guess I should go now and meet some of these long-lost relatives.
W: OK. Great to see you.

M: Very glad to see you again. You look just gorgeous!
W: Thanks, its so sweet of you to say so. I just had a new hairstyle. Im sorry to say this, but what on earth are you wearing? Your suit looks funny.
M: I wouldnt say that. It looks fine on me.
W: Are you kidding? You are really behind the times.
M: Perhaps so. But I dont care as long as my clothes are comfortable enough to wear. Whats the point of keeping in style?
W: I cant believe it! Dont you know people judge you by the clothes you wear? Your taste, personality, values?
M: I still prefer to be me.
W: You are so stubborn! By the way, Im going to get some diet pills. I want to look slim.
M: I dont think that is necessary. Thats not the way a woman should try to stay attractive. Maybe just make-up would be enough.
W: Why not? Come on, be open-minded!
M: Well, in that case all I can say is good luck!

Hello, everyone! Today, Im here to share with you a study weve done recently. In the study, we find children gain weight during the summer. We discover that hot weather, unhealthy food, and playing without a good plan all play a role. What happens to our children during the summer? Before were able to answer this question, we have to know something about our children at school. During the school year, children have to follow school rules. For example, they must have regular meal times. But this is no longer true in the summer. As far as I know, a lot of children dont have breakfast and lunch. They just have one huge meal in the middle of the afternoon. This sort of eating behavior surely leads to weight gain. And also, unhealthy food is everywhere. Its at schools, homes, and offices. In addition, when parents go to work, children are often left by themselves. They can choose to go outside to play or do some reading at home. But most of them just play computer games. I also want to point out that childrens being overweight has a lot to do with the parents. I advise all parents to watch their own habits. In America, almost 65% of our population is overweight, and two-thirds of our children are being raised by overweight parents.

W: I was thinking of just staying at home and getting some things done around the house.
M: Thats boring! Lets go somewhere where we can sit on the beach and read books.
W: Where would you like to go?
M: We could go to Hawaii. There are beautiful islands.
W: You always want to go places. But you know, we never spend any time at home after we married. And Im not the one for beach holidays.

M: Look! There is a koala hugging a tree. Theyre really so cute. Jill, why are you crying?
W: The government is planning to kill them because they may starve to death soon.
M: What a stupid idea! They should try saving them instead.
W: I agree. Lets start a campaign to save them. If we can find 5,000 people to each take one home, the problem will be solved.
M: Thats a good idea. You know, there are about 18 million people in Australia. Five thousand is only 0.027 percent of the population.
W: Lets do it then.
M: Killing as a solution to a problem is just not right.
W: You can say that again.
Text 8
W: How was this street before?
M: There were so many people around. People from the surrounding villages came to do different kinds of business.
W: So, obviously there were more shops here. What kind of shops were they?
M: Any kind. That was the biggest town in this region.
W: When did the population start decreasing?
M: About 50 years ago, when the river to the south gradually dried up, and people began to face a serious shortage of water.
W: So a lot of people started to move out of this town, right?
M: Yes. What else could they do?
W: Has the local government tried to do something?
M: They have been trying to build this dam for 7—8 years.
W: If the dam is built, the situation here will be improved.
M: Thats what we hope for.

W: Darling, Im going to stop by Bergners first. Its got some quality stuff. Who knows, some of their dresses might be on sale.
M: Bergners?
W: Its a fairly well-known store like Pennys. I need to get something for Lisas birthday. Shes into name brands. Any suggestions?
M: A Gucci handbag or Calvin Klein T-shirt might be nice. Oh, I have a 15% discount card for Pennys. Lets go ahead and use it. Here it is.
W: Its wonderful. We can save some money for our home. Oh, no! I was supposed to give Helen a call an hour ago. Its already a quarter to five. I left my phone with her. She must be still waiting for my call.
M: Use my phone, darling.
W: OK. Is my telephone number 61199621?
M: Oh, my god. You still dont remember it. Its 61299621. Only the last number is different from mine. Mine is 2.
W: Dont blame me. I have changed it for only three days.
M: OK. You should write it down on your notebook.

I am from South Africa. I am not at all used to this cold weather, but I am glad to say that I have all the clothes for this freezing weather.
When I first got to know that I would be attending this international conference here in Finland, I had no idea what kind of clothes I should take along. I didnt know what to do when I thought of this two-week stay here, with a rather formal dinner, a few parties, social gatherings and a dance during the conference.
Fortunately, my friend Julia has been to Northern Europe. Yes, she was a great help. She helped to solve my biggest problem. She placed an order for some warm suits and dresses, business-type clothes, of course, of dark colors. She also bought me some skirts and blouses so that I could wear the same clothes in several different ways. A couple of lively colored dresses will give me a nice change from time to time. She also helped me to choose a very warm raincoat and a pair of boots.
Oh, how lucky I am to have such a helpful friend. She saved me a lot of trouble.
