Carriers of Culture

2021-04-01

Beijing Review 2021年10期

During the past over 5,000 years, Chinas clothing and accessories during the different historical periods have been important carriers of culture. They reflected technical progress, development of materials and aesthetic changes over centuries. Moreover, they also outlined social values, hierarchy and the continuity of the Chinese nation.

The National Museum of China in Beijing is paying a tribute to the evolution of the costume culture with an exhibition, Ancient Chinese Culture: Costume and Adornment. It showcases jade, bone and ceramic objects, garments and other cultural relics divided into six historical periods. Supplemented by images and multimedia presentations, it vividly depicts peoples attire from the Neolithic period to the end of the last imperial dynasty, the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

Opened on February 6, the exhibition will run for a year through February 2022. BR
