Meanwhile, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, warning her two sons not to fall in love with the dog. At the time, Anns son Thomas was 10 years old, and Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation, was 21 years old.

Four days later Ann was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. When she arrived home from work, the dog threw itself against the screen door and barked madly at her. As soon as she opened the door, Riley dashed into the boys room where Ann found Jack suffering a heart attack. Riley ran over to Jack, but as soon as Ann bent over to help him the dog went silent.

“If it hadnt come to get me, the doctor said Jack would have died,” Ann reported to a local newspaper. At this point, no one had called to claim the dog, so Ann decided to keep it.

After Bernini broke his neck and lost all movements below his shoulders when he was 18, his brain still told his hands how to move—but the message couldnt get through the injured part that connects his brain to other parts of his body. Now, thanks to recent advances in electrical stimulation (刺激) technology. Bernini can once again grasp, pour, and even play Guitar Hero. To do so, he uses a micro-electrode array (MEA) that reads his brains signals and sends them through wires to something like a sleeve on his arm that electronically stimulates his muscles (肌肉).

In the past years, researchers have used several approaches to guide patients like Bernini to move their hands. In some systems, researchers implanted (植入) sensors in shoulder muscles that patients could still control, allowing them to move one hand by contracting muscles in the opposite shoulder. Other systems use brain implants similar to those in the new study, but to control robotic arms, rather than the patients own muscles. But never before has a patient been able to precisely move his hand using the same neural (神經的) signals that controlled his hand before his injury.

After implanting the MEA in Berninis brain, researchers connected it to a computer. Bernini trained the system to connect patterns of neural signals to specific movements by repeatedly mirroring the movements of an imaginary hand on a computer screen. Soon, Bernini could hold large objects like glasses and lift small objects like straws. He could also move each finger on his own just by thinking about it, which previous systems had never achieved. And it was absolutely an amazing moment.

8. How is Bernini now?

A. He has got over his neck injury.

B. He does well in playing the guitar.

C. His brain can control his hand movements.

D. His shoulder muscles guide his hand movement.

9. What did researchers want to do through brain implants in the past?

A. Control the patients hands.

B. Guide robots to help patients.

C. Help patients own muscles contract.

D. Repair patients injured neural signals.

10. What is the breakthrough in Berninis case compared with

previous studies?

A. He can hold and lift objects.

B. He can move each finger independently.

C. He can recognize his specific movements.

D. He can use neural signals for hand moving.

11. What should be the best title for the text?

A. Using New Systems for Muscle Injuries

B. Moving Hands by Contracting Muscles

C. Connecting Thoughts to Movements

D. Sending Neural Signals by Wires

Think about the last time you felt afraid. Was it a fear of height? Did you oversleep on a weekday and fear youd get into trouble at the office? In any case, you know what it feels like to feel fear.

But one woman doesnt. The woman, code-named “UM”, gave her first-ever interview after years of being studied by a team of researchers. The woman is given a code name because the researchers want to protect her from anyone who would take advantage of her inability to feel afraid.

UM cant tell you what fear is because shes never experienced it. “I wonder what its like to actually be afraid of something,” she said. The formal name for the disease is Urbach-Wiethe disease, which is characterized by a hoarse (粗哑的) voice, small bumps around the eyes, and calcium deposits in the brain.

In the case of UM, the disease has transformed the part of her brain that controls the human response to fear. In the interview, UM talks about an event in her life where she was held at knifepoint and gunpoint, “I was walking to the store, and I saw a man on a park bench. He said, ‘Come here, please. So I went over to him. He grabbed me by the shirt, put a knife to my throat and told me he was going to cut me. I told him, ‘Go ahead and cut me. I wasnt afraid at all. And for some reason, he let me go.”

Doctors who have been studying UMs condition for years have been trying different things that could strike fear into her. They finally figured something out—increasing UMs carbon dioxide levels. Extra carbon dioxide concentration in the blood is known to cause fear and panic in health individuals. Increasing UMs carbon dioxide levels did manage to give her a fright.

12. Why does the writer ask the questions in Paragraph 1?

A. To start a discussion. B. To tell what fear is.

C. To introduce the topic. D. To talk about an idea.

13. Why is the woman with Urbach-Wiethe disease given a

code name?

A. To ensure her safety.

B. To respect her privacy.

C. To meet the researchers demands.

D. To tell her case from other patients.

14. From UMs case, we can know that Urbach-Wiethe disease

may ___ .

A. lead to an increase in carbon dioxide

B. lead to a decrease in calcium deposits

C. stop the brain from responding quickly

D. stop the brain from functioning normally

15. What happened to UM according to the last paragraph?

A. She got the sense of panic.

B. She spoke with a hoarse voice.

C. She experienced another danger.

D. She died of the Urbach-Wiethe disease.

Like it or not, there will be difficult times in our lives. You might lose your job, fail in your exams or have an illness.       1       Here are some ways not to lose hope during difficult times.

Have faith.

2       No matter how bad the situation is, things will turn out to be good in the end. Several years ago I failed to get my masters degree.      3      But I got a scholarship (獎学金) to an overseas university later. Experiences like this strengthen my belief that having faith is important during difficult times.

Be around supportive people.

Going through difficult times is hard, and going through them alone is even harder. You need a group of positive people who can support you.       4       If you dont, my suggestion is to start looking for one. Dont wait until you need it, because it will be too late by then. You need the community before difficult times come.

Help others.

An additional benefit of being in a good community is that it encourages you to think about other people. It pushes you to help others and, therefore, think about other people.

5       As a result, your situation wont look as bad as it would be otherwise. Often the situation looks worse than it really is because we give too much attention. Shifting some of your attention away will put the situation in a better view.

A. Your community helps a lot.

B. It was a really bad experience.

C. Whatever it is, its important not to lose hope.

D. However, I changed my attitude towards failure.

E. In this way you take your attention away from yourself.

F. You must believe that things will work out well

eventually.

G. You should become part of a community that cares for

one another.

Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camels hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.

The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged. His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing.

The cats lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamins cousins, Mr Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamins drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paints and some brushes. He also sent six engravings (版画) by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paints and brushes Benjamin had ever seen.

In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamins parents if he might take the boy back to Philadelphia for a visit.

In the city, Mr Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape painting. William Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little. But he later said, “Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.

Children of all ages gathered in New York City recently for the International Toy fair. There were new, high-tech educational products. Toymakers are working to create these products for improving a childs emotional intelligence.

PleIQ is a set of plastic toy blocks. It uses visual (視觉的) reality technology to teach words, numbers and other things. Edison Durán directs the company that makes PleIQ. She showed people at the toy fair how virtual (虚拟的) images appear on the blocks when they are held in front of a camera. PleIQ has children act as teacher or guide to a companion character.

Karen Hu from another company showed an educational robot called Woobo. The robot comes programmed with educational games and activities. Children use its touch screen face to get them started. Hu described how the robot can help a child who has autism (自闭症). “The child can communicate with Woobo and follow some of the instructions Woobo is giving because he thinks of this as a companion instead of a parent or someone else telling him about certain things.”

At the EQtainment stand, sales director Jonathan Erickson explained the companys toys. “The purpose of all of our products is to develop emotional and social intelligence,” he said. Erickson showed off a board game called “Qs Race to the Top”. He said the game got his 4-year-old daughter to open up. “The biggest thing is her talking. And thats the key of all this—getting her feelings expressed out. Like, ‘Hey, what does it feel like to be sad? Or how does it feel like to be happy?”

It remains to be seen whether a game or toy can improve emotional intelligence. But toymakers are doing what they can to help parents in their efforts to raise well-rounded children.

8. How does PleIQ instruct children to learn?

A. By giving direct guidance.

B. By presenting visual images.

C. By taking photos with a camera.

D. By playing the role of a companion.

9. What can be inferred about Woobo from Paragraph 3?

A. It may be good company for kids.

B. It is programmed to be a teacher.

C. It is aimed to design games.

D. It can get started by itself.

10. What does Jonathan Erickson think of his toys?

A. They are quite easy to operate.

B. They can teach children numbers.

C. They can show their emotions clearly.

D. They help kids express themselves well.

11. What does the text mainly tell us?

A. Toys help to build emotional intelligence.

B. Educational toys sell well in the Toy Fair.

C. Children celebrate the International Toy Fair.

D. Toymakers are making money from educational products.

Before a new type of airplane goes into service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests that are more important than all the others.

The first is called the “tank test”. A modern airplane must fly very high in the sky. Air must be pumped (用泵輸送) into the plane so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air, the air presses against the skin of the plane inside. The pressure on a small window is like a huge foot that is trying to get out. If a small part of the plane were to fail, the plane would explode in the sky. To test the structure of the plane, the plane is lowered into a huge tank or container of water. Then it is filled with air. The pressure inside the plane is greater than it ever will be when it is high up in the air. Finally, there is an explosion. This does not cause so much damage inside the water tank as it would anywhere else. Engineers can discover which part of the plane has broken. Then that part is made stronger.

The most dangerous test happens when the new plane is going through test flights in the air. The test pilot must find out exactly what happens when the engines are all shut off at once. The plane begins to fall like a stone. It is the pilots job to find out how he can get control of the plane again. These two tests are examples of how planes are made safe before they ever carry passengers.

12. By doing the “tank test”, the engineers can find out ___ .

A. the amount of air in the plane

B. the power of the airplane engines

C. the strength of the plane structure

D. the pressure inside and outside the plane

13. During the “tank test” the plane will ___ .

A. break B. become stronger

C. be tested by pilots D. be filled with water

14. Why are test flights thought to be most dangerous?

A. The engines may be damaged.

B. The plane may explode in the air.

C. Too much air may get into the plane.

D. The pilot may lose control of the plane.

15. What can be the best title for the text?

A. The Importance of Flying Safely

B. The Danger of Testing Airplanes

C. Two Important Tests on Airplanes

D. How Airplanes Are Made and Tested

When very small dinosaur bones were found in a German mine, people thought they were from baby dinosaurs.1Martin Sanders work shows that they were probably fully grown and belong to the smallest giant dinosaur species ever2(find).

Growth marks on dinosaur bones are similar3growth rings on trees. The rings are far apart while the animal is young and growing quickly. They get closer as growth slows. “It is4(exact) these tight ring marks that we found in the fossil bones,” says Sander. So the fossils must have been from adult5(animal).

Why was this German dinosaur so much6(small) than other giant dinosaurs, which grew up to 45 metres long and7(weigh) as much as a thousand humans?

150 million years ago, most of Germany was underwater. Scientists think that as water levels rose, there was less and less land and food available. The dinosaur8(force) to adapt and evolved into a smaller animal9(need) less space and food.

Since 1998, scientists have dug up more than 1,000 dinosaur fossils in the mine. It is one of the few places in the world10the bones and footprints of dinosaurs have been found together.

Think his key was controversial, I devoted me to the problem heart and soul, trying to figure it out in a different way. Twenty minutes late, I succeeded in finding, in my opinions, the right key. Before I explained him my thought, he praised me and said I was right. Through this matter I had learnt that questioning is very important on the road to the truth.

Short and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis—anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the object of jokes in school gym classes in Englands rural Devonshire.

It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first the teen went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to cycle along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind building up his body and increasing his speed, strength and endurance (忍耐力). At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon.

The following year, he met John Ridgway, who became famous in the 1960s for rowing an open boat across the Atlantic Ocean. Saunders was hired as an instructor at Ridgways School of Adventure in Scotland, where he learned about the older mans cold-water exploits. Intrigued, Saunders read all he could about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions (遠征), and then decided that this would be his future.

Journeys to the Pole arent the usual holidays for this British country boy, and many people considered his dream as fantasy. “John Ridgway was one of the few who didnt say, ‘You are completely crazy, ” Saunders said.

In 2001, after becoming a skilled skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition toward the North Pole. He suffered from frostbite (凍伤), had a closer encounter with a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit.

Saunders has since then become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and hes skied more of the Arctic by himself than any other British. His old playmates would not believe his change.

Laughter Yoga is one form of yoga. Madan Kataria, a doctor in Mumbai, India invented it. He believed that people had forgotten how to really laugh. Through his research he made an interesting discovery. The human mind does not know the difference between forced laughter and real laughter. Forced laughter can also lead to a feeling of happiness.

And then Kataria had the idea for a group of people who would laugh together. He gathered a few of his friends together. They met in a public park in Mumbai. That small group grew and grew! And this is how people began to do Laughter Yoga. People doing Laughter Yoga usually meet together in a Laughter Club. Katarias friends formed the first Laughter Club in 1995.

Today, therere over 5,000 Laughter Clubs in 53 countries. But what exactly do people do in a Laughter Club? People in Laughter Yoga meetings usually do a series of exercises. The exercises include body movement, correct breathing, and of course, laughter! At the beginning of the meeting, people may have to force themselves to laugh. But by the end, everyone is usually laughing in a real way! Each meeting is a little different. But there are common exercises groups may do.

Experts say that the exercises help blood move around the body faster. They also say that Laughter Yoga helps people deal with the bad things in their lives. We are naturally drawn to friends and colleagues with familiar voices. Scientists have found people prefer those who have a similar accent, intonation and tone of voice to themselves.

Previous research has focused on how male or female a voice sounds. Men with deeper voices and women with slightly higher voices were thought to sound more attractive, because they suggest a bigger or a smaller body.

But the new study, published by a linguistics expert in Canada, suggests there is a more complex mechanism (機制) at play. Dr Molly Babel, from the University of British Columbia in Canada, said, “The voice is an amazingly flexible tool that we use to construct our identity. Very few things in our voices are changeless, so we felt that our preferences had to be about more than a persons shape and size.”

She recorded 30 volunteers voices and asked each to rate the others attractiveness on a range from one to nine. Each participant was from western America, with similar accents. The people were all in the same dialect group, but they showed that dialect to different degrees.

“We seem to like people who sound like we sound; we like people who fit within what we know,” Dr Babel said. She also found that breathy voices in women—typified by the famous American actress Marilyn Monroe—were seen as more attractive.

The breathy tone, caused by younger and thinner vocal cords (聲带), implied youthfulness and health. A creaky (咯吱作响的) voice, suggesting a person has a cold, is tired or smokes, was seen as unattractive. The participants preferred men who spoke with a shorter average word length and deeper voices.

The island of Fuerteventura in Spain is a great place awaiting your discovery. Here are some reasons.

La Concha Beach

La Concha Beach is close to the town and at sunset, most tourists rush to see the skies turn beautiful colors in just a few short moments. At low tide (潮汐), small pools of water form, and these are great for the little members of the family to take a dive in. There are enough parking lots and plenty of restaurants to choose from.

Corralejo Natural Park

If you are looking to experience the desert nature of Fuerteventura, Corralejo Natural Park is the place to be. It is a coin with two sides. One is characterized by volcanic scenery, and the other is white sand that has been cleansed by the blue water of the Atlantic Ocean. Getting to the park can be easily done by road.

Costa Calma Beach

Costa Calma Beach is characterized by blue waters and white sand. The beach is not packed, so you will get a chance to be just with your thoughts as you sunbathe on the sand. When the winds are swift, Costa Calma Beach turns into a hot spot for surfers. The road leading to the beach is fenced by green plants meaning the magic starts even before you get there.

Cofete Beach

The shoreline of this wild beach is great for its golden sand and wild water. Getting to Cofete Beach is not easy: perhaps thats why this place is still in its original state. The road has difficult spots that require expert driving skills. But, if you can tolerate it, you will be treated with some amazing views.

In 2014, Mindy Scheier started the Runway of Dreams Foundation, a non-profit (非營利的) organization that helps bring adaptive clothing to disabled people.

Scheier explained the inspiration behind her efforts. “My son, Oliver, was born with rigid spine muscular dystrophy,” she said. “His lack of strength created challenges with typical clothing. After spending years in the fashion industry, I decided that there was an opportunity to combine my fashion experience with my others.”

Scheier began to create trendy clothing that her son could wear with ease. For example, she used magnets and elastics (松紧带) in place of buttons and zippers. Those adjustments have enabled Oliver to wear the same style as his friends do, even jeans.

Scheiers vision extends beyond just helping her own son. “I soon realized that millions of disabled people were also struggling to access fashionable clothing that meets their needs,” she said. That was why she started the Runway of Dreams Foundation.

On September 5, 2018, the foundation held its annual fashion show during New York Fashion Week. The event showcased the foundations new adaptive clothing. The show featured several disabled models, including Cole Gottlieb and Maddie Hostetter. Cole, a 9-year-old boy born with cerebral palsy, loves to play baseball and soccer. He was excited to participate in the fashion show. “It lets me be a role model to others,” he said. Maddie, aged 8, was born with only one full arm. “I heard about Runway of Dreams from my mom,” explained Maddie. “Even though I can button clothes with one arm, the magnets have made it much easier for me.”

Scheier—whose TED Talk was released in January 2018—credits her passion with the progress Runway of Dreams has made in the last few years. “Passion allows you not to take no for an answer,” she encourages. “It allows you to keep going when faced with challenges.”

4. What made Scheier start Runway of Dreams?

A. Her fashion experience.

B. Her talent for designing clothing.

C. Her sons special needs in clothing.

D. Her feeling of being sorry for the disabled.

5. What is the main feature of the Runway of Dreams?

A. It is a non-profit organization.

B. It employs the disabled as models.

C. It produces trendy clothing for the disabled.

D. It dresses its clothing up with buttons and zippers.

6. What can we learn from what Cole and Maddie said?

A. They were grateful to Runway of Dreams.

B. They accepted the fact of being disabled.

C. They dreamed of being role models.

D. They were hopeful for their future.

7. What is essential in the growth of the foundation according to Scheier?

A. Dreams. B. Enthusiasm.

C. Progress. D. Challenges.

Argentina in the late nineteenth century was an exciting place. Around 1870, it was experiencing an economic boom (繁榮), and the capital, Buenos Aires, attracted many people. Farmers, as well as a flood of foreigners from Spain and Italy, came to Buenos Aires seeking jobs. These jobs didnt pay well, and the people felt lonely and disappointed with their new life in the city. As the unhappy newcomers mixed together in the poor parts of the city, the dance known as the tango (探戈舞) came into being.

At the beginning the tango was a dance of the lower classes. It was danced in the bars and streets. At that time there were many fewer women than men, so if a man didnt want to be left out, his only choice was to dance with another man so that he could attract the attention of the few available women. Gradually, the dance spread into the upper classes of Argentinean society and became more respectable.

In Europe at this time, strong interest in dance from around the world was beginning. This interest in international dance was especially evident in Paris. Every kind of dance from ballet to belly dancing could be found on the stages of the Paris theaters. After tango dancers from Argentina arrived in Europe, they began to draw the interest of the public as they performed their exciting dance in cafes. Though not everyone approved of the new dance, saying it was a little too shocking, the dance did find enough supporters to make it popular.

The popularity of the tango continued to grow in many other parts of the world. Soldiers who returned to the United States from World War Ⅰ brought the tango to North America. With the average American going through more than 700 pounds of paper per year, many firms are looking for ways to discourage their employees from over-using the office printer.

Toshiba American Business Solutions has come up with an alternative idea. It has introduced the e-STUDIO4508LP, a printer that gives users the option to print with erasable toner (墨粉)—allowing a single piece of paper to be reused several times.

To reuse a piece of paper, the printer basically uses the same process as a normal printer, but in reverse (反過来), said Bill Melo, chief marketing executive for Toshiba America Business Solutions. Paper printed with the erasable toner is fed back into the printer, superheated, and the toner gets removed and put in a discard (丢弃) tank.

There are a couple of catches. All of the printouts using the erasable toner have to be in blue ink, which is the only color in which erasable toner is now available. And the company said that people may want to stop reusing the printouts after five times through the eraser because small traces of erased text will build up over time.

The $15,420 printer is aimed at offices and schools, where there are often large numbers of printouts that outlive their usefulness quickly. With the erasable toner, its possible to load any short-lived handouts back onto the printer to be erased and then reused.

Still, convincing customers to commit to erasable toner isnt always easy. Melo said not all its customers were happy about only having the erasable option.

The model, Melo said, should better serve the needs of those who want to be environmentally conscious but also may need something more permanent on occasion.

We all wish we had just a bit more time. Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine, write your novel, or learn the guitar and so on.

But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter.

◆ Get out of bed earlier.

If you normally get up at 7:30 am, try getting up at 7:00 am. That half-hour might not sound like much, but it could be time that you use to exercise, to read that book youve been meaning to finish.

◆ Do the important tasks first.

Once you get to work, get the important ones done first. You can afford to spend at least an hour working on big, important tasks rather than on all those little urgent ones.  The urgent tasks will still get done, and you wont miss the important ones.

◆ Reduce interruptions.

Constant interruptions dont just eat up time; they also break your concentration. When youve got a big task to focus on, let your calls go to voicemail.  Wearing headphones makes it less likely that people will try to strike up a conversation.

When youre working, work. If your concentration is slipping, take a proper break. And if youre facing a difficult task, try breaking it into small steps or stages so that its easier to deal with.

A. Stay focused on your work.

B. Take breaks when necessary.

C. You want to make your day longer.

D. If you have an office door, close it.

E. If you work like this, youll usually save time.

F. I cant magically make all your days 25 hours long.

G. Or simply use it to get your day off to a calm and

organized start.

During the travel back to my hometown, in the plane, I sat next to an old lady who looked very scary. She closed her eyes  and placed her hands in her lap. I thought I might be nervous, so I planned to chat with her to make her to feel relaxed. We talk a lot about our families and experiences. When the flight over, I helped her carry her baggages. She was so grateful about my help that she gave me the big hug. On our way out, we waved goodbye. She kept on turning back to see me unless we couldnt see each other any long.

Theres a place in your heart

And I know that it is love

And this place could be much brighter than tomorrow

And if you really try

Youll find theres no need to cry

In this place, youll feel theres no hurt or sorrow

There are ways to get there

If you care enough for the living

Make a little space

Make a better place

Heal the world

Make it a better place

For you and for me and the entire human race

There are people dying

If you care enough for the living

Make a better place for you and for me

If you want to know why

Theres a love that cannot lie

Love is strong

It only cares for joyful giving

If we try

We shall see

In this bliss we cannot feel fear or dread

We stop existing and start living

Then it feels that always

Loves enough for us growing
