Attendance[出席,到场] at the world's 100 most-visited art museums dropped by 77% last year, down from 230 million in 2019 to just 54 million, as the novel coronavirus pandemic forced closures. The Art Newspaper noted that, on average, museums worldwide were shut for an extra 145 days last year, adding up to 41,000 days in total. Topping the list of the world's most visited museums is the Louvre in Paris, which counted 2.7 million through its doors, despite a 72% dip and reported losses of 90 million euros. Beijing's National Museum of China is the second most popular museum in the survey with 1.6 million visitors. Third in the table is London's Tate Modem, with 1.43 million attending. Other European institutions high on the list included Italy's Vatican Museums in fourth, with 1.3 million visitors, and Madrid's Reina Sofia, which was closed for only 80 days and drew 1.25 million, in sixth.

2    Earliest cherry blossom bloom

Cherry blossoms, also known as “sakura”, which experience a “peak bloom” that only lasts a few days, have been revered in Japan for more than 1000 years. People celebrate with viewing parties, flocking to the most popular locations to take photos and have picnics underneath the branches. But this year, cherry blossom season has come and gone in the blink of an eye, in one of the earliest blooms on record-and scientists warn it's a symptom of the larger climate crisis threatening ecosystems everywhere. In the central city of Kyoto, cherry blossoms peaked on March 26, the earliest in more than 1,200 years. There are two sources of increased heat, which is the main factor making the flowers bloom earlier: urbanization and climate change. With increased urbanization, cities tend to get warmer than the surrounding rural area, in what is called the heat island effect. But a bigger reason is climate change, which has caused rising temperatures across the region and the world. And these earlier dates aren't just a matter of tourists scrambling to catch peak bloom before the petals all fall-it could have a lasting impact on entire ecosystems, and threaten the survival of many species.

Cherry blossom season came earlier because of urbanization and ________.

3    Princess Diana's former apartment

Princess Diana's former apartment will be honored as a historic site later this year. English Heritage, an organization that manages more than 400 historic sites in the UK, recently announced that it will be installing a special plaque at the London apartment where Diana Spencer lived before she married Prince Charles. Princess Diana is one of six women to be honored with London Blue Plaques installed by English Heritage this year, according to the announcement. Diana lived in the Coleheme Court apartment with three friends before she was married and joined the royal family. “We are expecting our plaque to Diana, Princess of Wales to be very popular,” Anna Eavis, English Heritage's Curatorial Director, said in a statement. “She was an inspiration and cultural icon to many, raising awareness of issues including landmines and homelessness, and helping to destigmatize illnesses such as leprosy and depression.”

4    “Borrow a cup” trial in Starbucks

Starbucks is launching an experimental “borrow a cup” program at select locations in its hometown, Seattle. The program will kick off as a two-month trial in five Seattle stores. Customers at those stores will have an option to receive their drinks in a cup they can use again. Customers will order their drinks in a reusable cup and pay a $1 refundable deposit. When the customer is done with their drink, they return the cup and receive a $1 credit as their refund plus 10 Bonus Stars for their Starbucks Rewards account. If customers take the cup home, they can also take advantage of Starbucks's partnership with Ridwell, a company that will pick up the reusable cups from your home. Each cup is then cleaned and sanitized and put back into the rotation for another customer to use. The chain says one reusable cup replaces 30 disposable ones.
