Ten years have turned Huangniling, a quiet small mountain village in landlocked Suichang into a cradle of promising talents.
Landlocked in the southwest of Zhejiang and a rural county previously little known to the public and outside world, Suichang is now celebrated as a place where Tang Xianzu wrote the famous script of , made known in the world by the namesake Kunqu Opera play.
Over the past ten years, more than ten children of Huangniling have grown up to be music students studying at renowned music schools at home and abroad. The village also attracts music masters from all over the world.
All this started with Dai Jianjun, a restaurateur in Hangzhou. Dai came to Suichang in 2009, in search of good chickens for his restaurant. He found them in Huangniling where he set up and now runs a chicken and vegetable farm in the village as a supply base for his restaurant business in the capital city of Zhejiang. Dai has many musicians as his friends and invited them over to Huangniling to enjoy a chicken-eating spree. Dai and some music masters brainstormed and came up with an idea of running a music training program at the village. In 2011, a music education summer camp started at Huangniling. The program was renamed Music Dream in 2013. The summer camp music program is annual at Gonggeng Academy founded and funded by Dai.
Among the first visitors at the academy were conductor Chen Lin and master Chen Leiji. In the summer of 2011, Chen Leiji taught a class at Huangniling. A 13-year-girl Zen Jiahui showed her talent. She was brought to Beijing. Her life and education in Beijing was funded by Dai and conductor Chen. After two years in Beijing, she passed the national examination and matriculated as a major at the Central Conservatory of Music.
Gonggeng Academy now hosts three music education programs. Music Dream officially started in 2013, based on the summer camp launched in 2011. A piano program is run by Chen Qigang, the very composer of the official theme song of the Beijing Olympic Games. Violinist He Wei, violist Liu Yunjie and cellist Tu Qiang in partnership with Dai Jianjun jointly started a summer camp at the academy in 2018. The masters and the children of the Music Dream program performed in Suichang. In 2019, the string program turned international. As soon as the enrollment started in early 2019, more than 1,000 applications from all over the world flooded in. Thirty-one were recruited.
Music Dream, now opens only to primary school students from grade 2 to grade 4 in Suichang, begins auditing applicants in May every year. The number of young singers at the free-of-charge program is kept at no more than 40. Classes are held at week-long golden vacations in May and October and summer and winter breaks. Teachers are from Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou. Special courses are designed for these preteens. Since 2013, over 200 have received strict and inspirational training there.
The music education programs at the academy as well as in Suichang County attract many young talents at home and abroad. Chang Shilei, a pop singer and songwriter based in Beijing, has visited Gonggeng Academy many times. Dr. Yang Tingting, a teacher of the Arts School of Nantong University, after a visit to the piano program at Gonggeng Academy, signed her students up for being volunteers at the summer camp in 2020. Lai Jiating, one of the founders of Music Dream in 2013 and teacher of the Central Conservatory of Music who studied under the guidance of conductor Chen Lin, spends about 50 days a year teaching music in Suichang.
Suichang now has strong connections with music schools, symphony orchestras and musical instrument makers. These institutions help operating music education programs in Suichang. And visiting musicians hold concerts in Suichang at regular intervals. The Central Conservatory of Music has set up a support program that sends teachers to Suichang at regular intervals.
Children from Music Dream at Gonggeng Academy have performed at national and provincial level and in partnership with some top-class orchestras. They also have held concerts in cities across the country. In July 2014, the young singers made their debut by staging at Hangzhou Grand Theater. The production was tailor-made for the choir. In April 2019, 20 children singers from the program sang at the opening ceremony of the International Horticulture Expo in Beijing. In August 2020, the choir gave a 10-minute performance in Shanghai.
Dai Jianjun is very happy about the blooming and thriving music education programs in Suichang. After all, all this started years ago with a brainstorm about “what can we do about education to help children here” at a chicken dinner with his musician friends in the village of Huangniling.
