When I volunteered to spend a summer on a land-based whale-watching project in the west of Scotland,the project secretary warned me,“You have to be able to detect the whales from the shore—it's not as easy as you think.”Although I assumed I was well-qualified for the job, at the start of the project I had a few embarrassing moments screaming “Whale! ”before realizing that what I was pointing out were only waves breaking over underwater rocks,not sea creatures at all! After a while,I trained my eyes to “see”—to distinguish between waves hitting rocks and the rolling movements of whales underwater.

I spent a lot of time just watching the sea through my binoculars (双筒望远镜),looking actively for anything that indicated sea life below.My binoculars enabled me to spot the fins (鳍)of a dolphin against the darkness of the sea,and without a good pair of binoculars I definitely would have missed out on lots of amazing sea life.

In addition,I eventually realized that the birds provided us with signals that maybe whales and dolphins were in the area.Where there is a group of feeding seabirds such as seagulls or gannets, there is often a whale feeding under them.Gannets are really easy to spot from a distance—they drop out of the sky at speeds of up to 100kph,spearing the surface and sending bursts of water up behind them.

If you want to try this activity,it is worth organizing and planning carefully for whale watching.I recommend having a notebook and pencil nearby to record details of what you've seen and the environmental conditions at the time.This is not only a helpful aid in general,but you can also contribute your sightings to research projects such as the Sea Watch Foundation,which are monitoring the distributions of whales and dolphins.

Despite the early disappointments I had,I think there is undoubtedly something very special about watching whales. Nothing can compare with the secret thrill and peacefulness of seeing a wild animal just doing its own thing.

Ants are good navigators(领航员).They often travel long distances to search for food and carry it back to their nests.But how do they do it?

An international team of scientists,including researchers at the University of Edinburgh,UK,has recently come up with an explanation.According to the findings,ants use visual (视觉的)memories of their environments and the sun's position to find their way home.And they can even do it while traveling backwards.

The researchers studied a group of desert ants in Seville,Spain.The study's purpose was to find out how ants navigate when they carry pieces of food of different sizes.

To make it work,the scientists first trained the ants to follow a particular path back home,including a challenging 90-degree turn.Then the ants were given either a small or a large piece of food to test their navigational skills.

Ants with small pieces of food walked forward and cleared the 90-degree turn just fine.However,those with larger pieces sometimes had to turn backwards to drag them.Generally,these ants would set off in the correct direction.But if they stayed too long in the backward position,they would miss the correct turn to reach the nest.

Interestingly,not all of the backward-walking ants were that stubborn.Some would drop the food occasionally(偶尔)to check their surroundings.So after turning back to pick up their food,the ants would find themselves back on the right path.

Barbara Webb,a professor from the University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics,said the findings could help people make smarter robots in the future.

“Understanding their behavior gives us new insights into brain function and has inspired us to build robot systems that mimic(模仿)their functions,”she told the BBC.

Scientists have been able to copy the neural(神经的)network in the ant's brain.The hope is to invent robots that can explore by themselves in natural areas such as forests.

Lucy,whose skeleton (骨骼)was discovered in Ethiopia in 1974,died shortly after she fell out of a tree,according to a new study published on Monday in the British journal Nature.

For their research,Kappelman and Dr.Richard Ketcham used a CT scanner to create more than 35,000 “slices”of Lucy's skeleton.Scientists named Lucy from The Beatles'song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,which was played at the camp the night of her discovery.

The following analysis of the slices showed sharp,clean breaks seen at the end of Lucy's right humerus(肱骨)are similar to bone breaks seen in victims of falls.

The researchers concluded that these and other breaks in her skeleton showed that Lucy,who was believed to have stood about 3 feet 6 inches and weighed about 60 pounds,fell feet first and used her arms to support herself—but that the injury was too severe to have been survivable.

The researchers estimated that Lucy was going about 35 miles an hour when she hit the ground after falling from a height of roughly 40 feet,according to the statement.

That soundsplausible.But other scientists are doubtful. “There are countless explanations for bone breaks,”Dr.Donald C.Johanson,director of the Institute of Human Origins and one of the scientists who discovered Lucy,said. “The suggestion that she fell out of a tree is largely a just-so story and therefore unprovable.”Johanson said it was more likely that Lucy's breaks occurred long after she died,saying that elephant bones appear to have the same kind of breaks.It's unlikely that they fell out of a tree.

But the new research focused on “a small number of breaks”that are consistent with“highenergy bone-to-bone influences”and which differ from the sorts of breaks commonly seen in other collected bones.Kappelman responded in an email, “These appear to have occurred at or near the time of death.”
