Wu Ni (ANDRIAMAMONJY Ratsimiseta Oniniaina)
Local Teacher of the Confucius Institute at Antananarivo University in Madagascar
I’m Wu Ni from the Confucius Institute at Antananarivo University in Madagascar. It’s a great honor for me to be here today as a local teachers’ representative to share with you my story with Chinese language and the Confucius Institute. I’m also glad to have met Vice Premier Sun twice within a month. Early last month, when Vice Premier Sun was inspecting the Confucius Classroom at Le Petit Nid School affiliated to our Confucius Institute, I had the honor to introduce her the development of Confucius Institutes in Madagascar. She praised that my spoken Chinese was good but with a little southern accent, and then encouraged me to move forward and to cultivate more excellent students and envoys of friendship between China and Madagascar. Her warm and encouraging words still echo in my mind, which has strengthened my confidence in becoming an outstanding Chinese teacher.Thank you, Vice Premier Sun.
My “southern” accent may have come from my Chinese teacher from Jiangxi Province, or it might be formed during my two years of studies at Jiangxi Normal University. When I first came to China in 2010, I couldn’t understand the menu and didn’t know what I had ordered each time in restaurant, which was just like waiting for an unknown gift. Luckily, all Chinese food was so delicious that I was always amazed by the food. During my stay in China, my goal was to learn Chinese well, to have a better understanding of China and to make my parents proud of me. Therefore, I kept working hard and overcame many difficulties. I improved a lot in Chinese with the help of my teachers and friends. My teachers often encouraged me to participate in all kinds of cultural activities, in which I felt the charm of Chinese culture and fell in love with it. At the same time,my ability of expressing in Chinese improved quickly. The two years in China passed soon, but I became attached to Chinese language and China, the once unknown country which was thousands of miles away from Madagascar. Instead of feeling lonely and helpless,I had a strong sense of identity and belonging when living and studying in China. Chinese language and China have become a part of my life.
In order to express my gratitude and help those children in Madagascar realize their dreams, I chose to return to the Confucius Institute after graduation. I became a Chinese teacher in the Confucius Institute at Antananarivo University and opened a new chapter in my life. I still remember I was only 22 when I taught my first lesson and the students were sophomores. On arriving at the classroom, a student saw me and said, “Isn’t it strange that our school keeps enrolling freshmen? Can she catch up with the lessons?” But when they got to know that I was the teacher, their jaws dropped in surprise, and I felt very proud. Though teaching in the Confucius Institute is quite hard with much pressure, I don’t feel tired because of the happiness it brings me.I feel a sense of achievement and think I may be the happiest person in the world when my students pass HSK and get this “passport” to China that could change their lives. The Confucius Institute is a big and lovely family, which is also my second home. Here, I met my significant other, who is also a local teacher. We spent much more time here in the Confucius Institute than at our home. Last year, our daughter was born. We hope that she can also study in China and continue to carry forward the friendship between China and Madagascar like us twenty years later.
Distinguished guests, teachers and friends,
China’s rapid development has brought new opportunities to many African countries that want to have better development like Madagascar and to many African youngsters. More and more African countries are looking forward to expanding their cooperation with China and more and more Chinese companies are doing business in Africa. It is already the consensus of youngsters in Madagascar and other African countries that learning Chinese well can bring them a bright future. They can have broader space for development and have the possibility to realize their dreams. Although China and Africa are thousands of miles apart, the Belt and Road Initiative binds us together and we feel connected by Chinese language. As the cooperation between China and Africa deepens, more and more African countries brought Chinese language into their national education system, in which local teachers will play a more and more important part. The Confucius Institute will definitely usher in a bright future, and as I was nurtured here, I will try my best to cultivate more excellent students that can serve as envoys for the friendly cooperation between China and African countries like Madagascar expectation to our local teachers.
