Larry was on another of his underwater expeditions (探險), but this time, it was different. He decided to take his daughter along with him. She was only ten years old. This would be her first trip with her father on what he had always been famous for.
Larry first began diving when he was his daughters age. Similarly, his father had taken him along on one of his expeditions. Since then, he had never looked back. Larry started out by renting diving suits from the small diving shop just along the shore. He had hated them. They were either too big or too small. Then, there was the instructor. He gave him a short lesson before allowing him into the water with his father. He had made an exception. Larry would never have been able to go down without at least five hours of theory and another similar number of hours on practical lessons with a guide. Children at his age were not even allowed to dive.
After the first expedition, Larrys later diving adventures only got better and better. There was never a dull moment. In his black and blue suit and with an oxygen tank fastened (系牢) on his back, Larry dived from boats into the middle of the ocean. Dangerous areas did not prevent him from continuing his search. Sometimes, he was limited to a cage underwater but that did not bother him. At least, he was still able to take photographs of the underwater creatures.
Larrys first expedition without his father was in the Cayman Islands. There were lots of diving spots in the area and Larry was determined to visit all of them. Fortunately for him, a man offered to take him around the different spots for free. Larry didnt even know what the time was, how many spots he dived into or how many photographs he had taken. The diving spots afforded such a wide array (一大群) of fish and sea creatures that Larry saw more than thirty varieties of creatures.
Larry looked at his daughter. She looked as excited as he had been when he was her age. He hoped she would be able to continue the family tradition. Already, she looked like she was much braver than she had been then. This was the key to a successful underwater expedition.
24. In what way was this expedition different for Larry?
A. His daughter had grown up. B. He had become a famous diver.
C. His father would dive with him. D. His daughter would dive with him.
25. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A. Larry had some advantages. B. Larry liked the rented diving suits.
C. Divers had to buy diving equipment. D. Ten-year-old children were permitted to dive.
26. Why did Larry stay in a cage underwater sometimes?
A. To dive into the deep water. B. To protect himself from danger.
C. To admire the underwater view. D. To take photos more conveniently.
27. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?
A. Larry had a good memory. B. Larry didnt wear a watch.
C. Larry was not good at math. D. Larry enjoyed the adventure.

Safety is a huge concern whenever I run with my earphones in. But I need music to run. Otherwise all I hear is the sound of my own breathing. So Ive found a compromise (妥協): I run with only one earphone in. The music sounds off. Its an imperfect solution.
An updated pair of headphones, called AfterShokz, aim to do better. AfterShokz bills itself as using bone-conducting technology to conduct music from the front of the ear, delivering sound through your cheekbone and inner ear. This keeps your eardrum (鼓膜) free to hear everything else.
“Earbuds (耳塞式耳机) are typically designed to block out all sound, which is fine when you are inside. But when youre outside, you need all your senses. It would be like sending you out cycling with a blindfold on,” says Rod Annet, managing director of AfterShokz.
Heres where AfterShokz comes in. The headphones hook over the back of your head with the main “bud” resting high up against your cheek. This keeps your ear free to delight in other sounds.
So do they work? In a word, yes. During a 45-minute jog, they didnt bounce or shift.
What about the downsides? If youre a huge fan of high-quality sound, you might find the headphones a bit tinny. One friend expressed concerns about missing the ability to get lost in the music as you might be distracted by other noises.
Yet those are all minor details. For me, probably the biggest problem is the price. Ranging between ?49.96 to ?83.29, AfterShokz headphones arent exactly cheap.
With all that considered, would I recommend them? Yes. AfterShokz headphones are quite useful. While jogging out, they were light, painless, and easy to use. They made me feel safer.
28. What is special about AfterShokz headphones?
A. They are a good choice for inside use. B. They allow users to hear other sounds.
C. They can make music sound more beautiful. D. They can deliver sound through your eardrum.
29. What does the authors friend think of AfterShokz headphones?
A. They prevent users getting lost. B. They deliver high-quality sound.
C. They often get lost while users are running. D. They fail to allow users to enjoy the music.
30. How does the author think of AfterShokz headphones?
A. They are too expensive. B. They seem quite useless.
C. They make users feel pain. D. They are too complex to use.
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To express worries. B. To introduce a product.
C. To share a personal story. D. To complain about a product.
D
Researchers at the University of Bedfordshire have developed a new technique for powering electronic device. The system, developed by Professor Ben Allen at the Centre for Wireless Research, uses radio waves as power.
Believed to be a world first, the team claims it could eventually get rid of the need for traditional batteries. The university has now applied for a patent (專利) application to get the only rights to the technique.
Professor Allen and his team have created a system to use medium wave frequencies to replace batteries in small everyday devices like clocks and remote controls.
The new technique uses the “waste” energy of radio waves and has been developed as part of the universitys research into “power harvesting”. Professor Allen said that as radio waves have energy—like light waves, sound waves or wind waves—in theory, these waves could be used to create power.
“The new area of power harvesting technology promises to reduce our reliance (依赖) on traditional batteries,” he said. “Its really an exciting way of taking power from sources other than what we would normally think of.”
The team is now waiting for the results of the patent application to get recognition of the technique. Professor Allen said that the teams achievements had all been done in their “spare time”. “Our next stage is to try and raise some real funds so that we can take this work forward and make a working pattern and maybe partner up with the right people and take this to a full product in due course,” he said.
“Power harvesting plays a really important part in our future, because, just in this country, we leave somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 tons of batteries in landfill sites every single year—that is poisonous chemicals going into the ground.”
He added that development of the product could also be “commercially beneficial”. “The market for this is several billion pounds. Weve seen market predictions for 2020 which have these kinds of figures, so theres a lot of commercial potential in this area,” he said.
Pro-vice-chancellor at the University of Bedfordshire, Professor Carsten Maple said, “This type of work is a reflection of the universitys growing reputation and experience in carrying out creating research.”
32. From the text we know the new technique for powering electronic devices ___ .
A. uses radio waves to create power B. has replaced traditional batteries

33. According to Professor Allen, power harvesting technology ___ .
A. takes power from usual sources B. makes full use of radio waves
C. aims at huge commercial benefits D. reduces our dependency on traditional batteries
34. What is Professor Carsten Maples attitude toward the new technique?

35. What does the text mainly talk about?
