One day when I was 5, my mother criticized me for not finishing my rice and I got angry. I wanted to play outside and not to be made to finish eating my old rice. In my angry motion to open the screen door with my foot, I kicked back about a 12-inch part of the lower left hand corner of the new screen door. But I had no regret, for I was happy to be playing in the backyard with my toys.
Today, I know if my child had done what I did, I would have criticized my child, and told him about how expensive this new screen door was, and I would have delivered a spanking (打屁股) for it. But my parents never said a word. They left the corner of the screen door pushed out, creating an opening, a crack (裂縫) in the defense against unwanted insects.
For years, every time I saw that corner of the screen, it would remind me of my mistake from time to time. For years, I knew that everyone in my family would see that hole and remember who did it. For years, every time I saw a fly buzzing in the kitchen, I would wonder if it came in through the hole that I had created with my angry foot. I would wonder if my family members were thinking the same thing, silently blaming (责怪) me every time a flying insect entered our home, making life more terrible for us all. My parents taught me a valuable lesson, one that a spanking or strict words perhaps could not deliver. Their silent punishment for what I had done delivered a hundred stern messages to me. Above all, it has helped me become a more patient person and not burst out so easily.

B. To have a better control of himself.
C. Not to make mistakes in the future.
D. To hide his anger away from others.
27. What does the author mainly want to tell us?
A. Parents shouldnt educate their children.
B. Adults should ignore their childrens bad behavior.
C. What is the best way to become a more patient person?
D. Silent punishment may be more effective in educating children.
C
Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their cats are just as used to the warm shelter (住所) as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.
Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When youre cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water.
If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pets water. Sometimes owners dont realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet cant get anything to drink. Animals that dont have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.
28. What can you learn about pets in winter from Paragraph 1?
A. They build their own shelter.
B. They like to stay in warm places.
C. They are used to living outdoors.
D. They are often forgotten by their owners.
29. Why should pet owners stay with their pets when they are taken out in cold weather?
A. To keep them company.
B. To help them find shelters.
C. To stop them from eating bad food.
D. To know when to bring them inside.
30. Left on their own outdoors in cold weather, pets may _____ .
A. get lost in the wild B. dig deep holes for fun
C. dirty the snow nearby D. run short of clean water
31. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To give practical advice. B. To solve a problem.
C. To tell an interesting story. D. To present a research result.

The kids in this village wear dirty, ragged clothes. They sleep beside cows and sheep in huts made of sticks and mud. They have no school. Yet they all can chant the English alphabet, and some can make words.
The key to their success: 20 tablet computers (平板電脑) dropped off in their Ethiopian village in February by a US group called One Laptop Per Child.
The goal is to find out whether kids using todays new technology can teach themselves to read in places where no schools or teachers exist. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers analyzing (分析) the project data say theyre already amazed. “What I think has already happened is that the kids have already learned more than they would have in one year of kindergarten,” said Matt Keller, who runs the Ethiopian program.
The fastest learner—and the first to turn on one of the tablets—is 8-year-old Kelbesa Negusse. The devices camera was disabled to save memory, yet within weeks Kelbesa had figured out its workings and made the camera work. He called himself a lion, a marker of accomplishment (成就) in Ethiopia.
With his tablet, Kelbasa rearranged the letters HSROE into one of the many English animal names he knows. Then he spelled words on his own. “Seven months ago he didnt know any English. Thats unbelievable,” said Keller.
The project aims to get kids to a stage called “deep reading”, where they can read to learn. It wont be in Amharic, Ethiopias first language, but in English, which is widely seen as the ticket to higher paying jobs.
32. How does the Ethiopian program help the kids in the village?
A. It provides money for building schools.
B. It allows them to study on their own.
C. It improves their living standards.
D. It trains teachers for them.
33. What can we infer from Kellers words in Paragraph 3?
A. They need more time to analyze data.
B. More children are needed for the research.
C. He is confident about the future of the project.
D. The research should be carried out in kindergartens.
34. It amazed Keller that with the tablet Kelbesa could _____ .
A. make phone calls to his friends
B. learn English words quickly
C. write letters to researchers
D. draw pictures of animals
35. What is the aim of the project?
A. To offer Ethiopians higher paying jobs.
B. To make Amharic widely used in the world.
C. To help Ethiopian kids read to learn in English.
D. To assist Ethiopians in learning their first language.
第二節 阅读七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage.
Escaping a fire is a serious matter. It is important to know the ways you can use and to show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the building, escaping through windows is possible; learn the best way of leaving through windows with the least chance of serious injury.
An average person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help.
Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked (滲入) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escaping are those which open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto stones might end in injury.
A. It is about the height of an average man.
B. Bushes and grass can help to break a fall.
C. No one knows for sure when a fire will happen.
D. Knowing what to do during a fire can save yourself.
E. Dont lose your head if unfortunately a fire breaks out.
F. The second floor windows are usually not very high from the ground.
G. Be sure to keep the door closed, or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room.
