● Chinese Scientists Develop Devilfish2-Shaped Soft Robot
Chinese researchers in Northwestern Polytechnical University have developed a biomimetic3 robot in the shape of a manta ray4, or devilfish. It can flap its wings and slide underwater.
As one of the natures most efficient swimmers, manta rays have a unique propulsion5 mechanism with high propulsion efficiency, high mobility and stability, low noise and large load capacity6.
The researchers made the bionic soft robot prototype7 modeled on the shape and motion of a manta ray. The prototype, with a wingspan8 of 80 cm, is powered by a battery. It can swim at a speed of up to 1.85 km per hour.
“Our team is also developing prototypes that can dive up to 1,000 meters and work for a month,” said the project leader Pan Guang, also dean9 of the School of Marine Science and Technology of the university.
Once completed, the robot can be used for performing search operations, observing the ocean environment and conducting submarine scientific investigations10, Pan said.
The team will test the robot in lake conditions soon and in the open ocean next year. They also plan to load more sensors11 for visual and sound detection on the robot for further research.

西北工业大学的中国研究人员开发出了一种形似魔鬼鱼或章鱼的仿生机器人,它可以拍打翅膀在水下滑行。
作为大自然中效率最高的游泳健将之一,章鱼拥有独特的推进机制,具有推进效率高、机动性高和稳定性高,噪音低、承载能力大等特点。
研究人员根据章鱼的形状和动作建立了仿生软体机器人模型。该模型的翼展为80厘米,由(锂)电池供电,可以每小时1.85公里的速度游动。
“我们的团队还在开发能够潜水1000米,并连续工作一个月的模型,”项目负责人潘光说,他也是该大学海洋科学与技术学院院长。
他说,一旦完成,该机器人可用于执行搜索行动,观察海洋环境和进行潜艇科学调查。
该团队将很快在湖泊条件下和明年开放的海洋中测试。他们还计划在机器人上装载更多用于视觉和声音检测的传感器,以便进一步研究。
