National Walkways refer to a system of trails and footpaths facilitating navigation through natural areas with complete and original ecosystems. Administrated by various government bodies, they connect a series of important natural and cultural sites, offering opportunities to experience nature.
National Walkways represent a significant part of Chinas infrastructure and an important piece of the countrys image. Wellmaintained trails foster ecological education and tourism services while helping protect cultural heritage and promote economic growth.
On November 13, 2017, the National Forestry Administration(todays National Forestry and Grassland Administration) unveiled the list of Chinas first group of national forest walkways, which was soon expanded by adding the second and third groups. China has now established 12 national forest walkways with a total length of over 22,000 kilometers.
