WAR HERO HAILED
Chinese President Xi Jinping recently called for carrying forward the spirit of dedication of 95-year-old war hero Zhang Fuqing, encouraging people to come together and create a powerful force to forge ahead in the new era.
Zhang, a Communist Party of China member, was a soldier of the Northwest Field Army, which was one of the main forces of the Peoples Liberation Army during the War of Liberation (1946-49).
He was honored by the Northwest Field Army for performing meritorious deeds and won the honorary title of Combat Hero twice.
In 1955, Zhang retired from the army and devoted his work and life to the poverty-stricken mountainous areas in Laifeng, a remote county in central Chinas Hubei Province.
For more than 60 years, he deliberately kept his past achievements a secret, even from his children. It wasnt until the end of 2018 when authorities were collecting and recording veterans information that he revealed his life story.
Trans-Pacifi c Debate
Guangming Daily May 31
The televised debate between Fox News anchor Trish Regan and China Global Television Network (CGTN) host Liu Xin on May 30 received widespread attention.
Liu joined Regan on the latters show on Fox Business Network from CGTNs Beijing studio for a live discussion on China-U.S. trade issues. The 16-minute talk covered topics from intellectual property protection and tariff disputes to Chinas status as a developing nation.
As a matter of fact, it was more like a dialogue than a debate with both being polite and restrained.
Although they didnt reach a consensus at the end, the dialogue was still meaningful. It enabled people in the U.S., who have long been under the infl uence of the U.S. media, to know Chinas views. Hopefully people in the U.S. will have an objective understanding of the China-U.S. trade friction after watching the debate.
It is noteworthy that Regan dropped her earlier high-strung and inflammatory manner in the debate. It indicates that as long as the U.S. is willing to have dialogue and negotiations based on equality and facts, problems can be resolved through candid communication.
Many problems and divergences can be resolved if the U.S. drops its pride and prejudice. Although the debate was between the two countries media, it can provide some useful tips for the two countries governments to address the trade friction.
Rural Vitalization
Outlook Weekly June 3
One year since Chinas rural vitalization strategy was implemented, rural areas have shown progress in many aspects, according to a survey by Outlook Weekly and the National Bureau of Statistics in 100 villages in east Chinas Jiangxi Province.
The income of both rural residents and cooperatives has improved, with the means of income more diversified. In addition to income from farming, those from entrepreneurship and assets have also steadily increased. A rising number of villages are making a profit by renting out collectively owned land and other assets.
Rural infrastructure has become more developed. 4G networks, logistics services and entertainment facilities have expanded in rural areas. Today, the increasingly complete infrastructure represented by the Internet in rural areas has become an important factor for younger-generation migrant workers to return.
Industrial development has also been boosted in rural areas. An increasing number of market entities have brought complete industrial chains to rural areas, which reduced the risks for agricultural businesses and improved the brand value of agricultural products, in addition to creating more jobs for residents.
Rural-born entrepreneurs are on the rise and have become a reliable force for rural transformation. Returned migrant workers are showing strong motivation to start their own businesses.
Challenges of Shared Economy
China Youth Daily June 4
For a long time, the shared economy was characterized by low-priced but high-quality and convenient products and services. However, the situation is changing.
In many cities, the cost of shared bike services increased to as high as 1 yuan ($0.14) for every 15 minutes and the cost of shared phone chargers rose from a fraction of 1 yuan per hour to 2-3 yuan ($0.29-0.43) an hour.
All this shows that the low-price era of the shared economy has come to an end.
Many cannot help but ask why shared products and services were so cheap and why they became expensive.
It is wrong to assume that the low prices of the shared economy were a reasonable market price. The fundamental reason behind the low price was that the operators of the shared economy gave subsidies to grab customers from competitors, not because they had found effective methods to save costs. However, no industry can sustain such a model. Once large enterprises stand out in the chaotic competition and consumers have been wooed, the model will be abandoned and enterprises will raise prices.
At this point, consumers have two options, either to continue to use the service or exit. Whether users are willing to continue to subscribe depends on whether the enterprises can provide premium services that meet the formers needs.
