And there is always plenty to explore17.

Nishiki Market is a busy shopping street with over 100 shops and restaurants. It is narrow and long, about 400 meters in length. Shop owners dont push visitors to buy anything. Instead, they simply invite people to try out various samples. Each shop usually specializes in one type of food, and they like to attach18 to similar shops. At the first glance19, you might think they are all together.

Nishiki Market has a history spanning(横跨)several centuries. And many stores have been operated by the same families for many generations20. As one of the most important markets for Kyoto, Nishiki Market is often packed with locals and tourists. It can take a long time to see all of Nishiki Market, because its many shops and deliciously looking and smelling food. Be sure to visit with an empty stomach, between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Another fun secret is, in Japan, people traditionally look down to eating in the street, but in Nishiki Market, this rule does not exist. So go ahead and have fun tasting the best of Kyoto there!
