A long time ago, in ancient China, there lived a young girl named Hua Mulan.

Mulan's father was once a general.

He had fought in many wars, and was very brave.

When Mulan's father retired, he was old and frail.

很久以前，在古代中国，有一个年轻的女孩，名叫花木兰。

木兰的父亲曾是一名将军。

他曾征战多年，骁勇善战。

木兰的父亲退役时已年老体衰。

Mulan's father taught Mulan how to use a sword, and how to ride a horse when she was a child.

在木兰小的时候，她的父亲就教她如何用剑，如何骑马。

He trained her for many years, and Mulan became skillful.

他训练了木兰很多年，木兰变得技艺娴熟。

然而，终于有一天，战争爆发了。

One day, however, the war broke out.

The recruiters arrived at Mulan's village.

They asked of every family for one man to join the army.

征兵的人来到木兰的村子。

他们要求每个家庭都出一个男人参军。

木兰知道如果父亲去参战, 一定会战死沙场。

于是，她穿上父亲的军装，佩上父亲的剑，女扮男装，代父从军。

Mulan knew that if her father went off to the war, he would surely die.

So she took her father's uniform and sword, dressed as a man, and joined the army instead of her father.

In order to hide the fact that she was a girl,she cut her hair and made her voice deep.

Mulan learned some new skills such as archery and Kung Fu in the army.

在军队里，木兰学习了一些新的技能，比如射箭和功夫。

为了隐藏自己的女儿身，她剪短了长发，压低了嗓音。

Twelve years passed. Mulan fought in many battles, and became one of the best soldiers in the army.

经过十二年的征战，木兰成了军队里最棒的士兵之一。

After the victory of the war, the emperor wanted to reward Mulan.

But Mulan thanked the emperor, and told him that she just wanted to go back home.

She then revealed to him that she was a woman.

The Emperor was shocked, but he respected her.

战争胜利后，皇帝想要奖励木兰。

但是木兰谢过皇恩，告诉皇帝她只想回家。

然后她透露了自己的女儿身份。

皇帝很震惊，但尊重了她的意愿。

Eventually, Mulan came back to her village.

When Mulan's father saw her, he burst out in tears of happiness.

Mulan lived in peace there for the rest of her life.

Her story became a legend of China.

最终，木兰回到了村子。

木兰的父亲见到了女儿，激动得热泪盈眶。

木兰在那里平静地度过了余生。

她的故事成了中国的传奇。

第一幕

场景：木兰家门口 角色：旁白、木兰的父亲、木兰

旁白：It is a bright day. Mulan and her father sit on the grass to rest after practicing swordwork.

木兰的父亲神情严肃：Remember to be strong in the fi ght.

木兰：I know, Father.

木兰的父亲：If you are not strong, then you will fall.

木兰：Yes father, I know.

旁白：Mulan looks away and watches some other young girls delicately painting their faces.

木兰：Why don't the other girls learn how to fight? Why is it only me?

木兰的父亲：Because most people think girls shouldn't learn such things. The fight is only for men.

木兰：But you think differently?

木兰的父亲：Yes. I think it is useful for everybody to learn. Come on, get up. Your break is over（木兰起身，继续练剑。）

第二幕

场景：木兰家 角色：旁白、士兵、木兰的父亲、木兰

旁白：The government official is making an announcement. All the village folk are listening,including Mulan and her father.

士兵：The war is coming! We need a man from every family to join us and fight.

旁白：The official pastes up(张贴) a notice and everyone gathers around to read.

士兵：You must sign your name on here. We will leave on tomorrow morning.

木兰：Father, what will you do? My brother is too young.

木兰的父亲：Yes, you're right. I must fi ght.

木兰：No! You're much too old! There must be another way!

木兰的父亲：Only men can fi ght in wars. I must prepare and go.

木兰：But you will die if you fi ght!

木兰的父亲：Mulan! Do not speak of this now! There is no other way.

旁白：Mulan's father walks away. Mulan stares at the notice.

木兰：There is another way. I will pretend to be a man and fi ght for you.

（父亲退场，木兰穿上父亲的铠甲，拿上父亲的剑，骑马离开了家。）

第三幕

场景：军队里 角色：旁白、木兰、士兵甲、士兵乙

旁白：Mulan is practising Kung Fu. Two of her comrades are watching her practice.

士兵甲：You know, for a guy, he is actually quite pretty.

士兵乙：Yes, it's strange. And his skills are amazing.

旁白：Mulan notices the soldiers watching her. She walks over to them.

木兰：Want to join me?

士兵甲一脸疲惫：No, we have just fi nished our practice. We're tired.

士兵乙坐在地上摸着肚子：Yeah, we're going to get some food.

木兰神色凝重：But there is a war going on! We have to be ready.

士兵甲：We can't be as hardworking as you.

木兰：I want to be ready when the enemy comes.

士兵乙：You have my respect.

木兰：Thank you.

（木兰继续习武，两个士兵准备去吃饭。）

第四幕

场景：宫殿里 角色：旁白、皇帝、木兰

旁白：The Emperor is giving Mulan an award.

皇帝：You have done us proud.

木兰：Thank you, your highness. It was my honor.

皇帝：I wish you to join my council(政务部门).

木兰：Thank you, your highness, but I must decline.

皇帝一脸疑惑：Hmm? Why so?

木兰：I wish only to go back home, and live in peace with my family.

皇帝摸摸下巴：If that is your wish.

木兰神色紧张：I must tell you something else. I am no man. I am a woman named Mulan.

皇帝起身走向木兰：Really?

木兰：Yes, I am sorry I have lied to you.

皇帝拍拍木兰的肩膀：It is okay, Mulan. You are a brave woman. Now, go home and see your family. They must miss you very much.

木兰：Thank you so much! Your highness.

（木兰眼含泪水，向皇帝鞠躬致谢。然后散开束发，骑马奔向自己的家乡。）
